Did my part to give that stat an early start. It's been an interesting year already.

Yeah, subby seems to be missing that the focus of the article is "find a new job" not "quit without finding a new job".

Job killing government growth and an out of control deficit is causing people to quit their jobs. This is only going to mean more unemployment. Wait until these clowns realize that looking for a higher paying job will cause more problems and will only harm job creators further.

We're in the process of hiring a few people.  We've had three people accept a position, only to withdraw before they start because they found something else.

Given all the entitlements that President Welfare has rolled out, working for a living does seem a bit drastic.

Good luck finding that new job, they just aren't out there, unless you're willing to take a massive pay cut, and not work full time.

Oh yeah? Move up to Connecticut, between employers that discriminate against the chronically unemployed (whether it be the persons fault or not) and the fact that people with masters degrees are competing with high school kids for that Wal-Mart Greeter job, we're going to have an entirely new class of homeless people in about 10 years or so.

I have a very fine job in NYC that I just started, thanks.  At a significant salary increase to boot.  I'll tell you what though I can put you in touch with some rather eager recruiters if you're willing to commute to the city.  What's your field?

I work in banking and do just fine, thanks, but I know plenty of unskilled teenagers and twenty somethings who either A. Can't even get an entry level retail position as a first job or B. Lost their jobs right at the beginning of the recession, was never able to find another one, and now employers won't even give their resume a second look because they've been unemployed for 2+ years.

I don't know what special part of the world where you know teenagers who can't get a retail job especially with the holidays that just passed.  As for your vast selection of 20 something friends it sounds like you're saying that their are jobs, but employers just don't want them for it.

The article we're talking about is people with jobs who are looking to change to better ones.  Hell, I thought you were clear on that based on your boobs in the thread.

As someone who is grossly underpaid for their position, I might be doing this too. In general, I really wish owners and managers would stop this asshattery of underpaying everyone and treating them like shiat because they really think there is not a single employer out there that is hiring.

Dogs and cats living together!

I plan on job-hunting in June. I'm currently working at a public high school in a 9 month contract position. I hate the 'benefits' they offer. I'm going back to school at night for a second and more profitable Bachelor's degree and am on track for that to be done by May.

Happens everywhere as older and more dependable workers try to work the same retail jobs to make ends meet. Given the choice between a teenager/20-something or a 35 year old woman down on her luck, which do you choose?
It's even worse for college graduates, because a degree just means they're more likely to leave a shiatty retail position, and thus less likely to get hired.

Sergeant Grumbles: James!: ***snip***

I work for a company that does outsourced recruiting, and the research and my personal experience on the recruiting side and as a job seeker match that quite well. Companies increasingly only want to hire candidates that fit into a very tight window of experience, credentials, and pay rate. If you haven't already done the job that they are hiring for, they don't want you. If you have the qualifications they are looking for, they don't want to pay you.

Obviously this is not all-encompassing as there are good companies out there that are willing to build a workforce, but the trends are going to positions being open longer, more candidates applying and being interviewed per position, and hiring decisions taking longer.

I have just started the hunt for a new job because I am paid about 40% less than I should be according to recent market data. If I find something that will pay what someone with my skill set is worth or more I will be out the door at my current job. I've had glowing reviews from coworkers and clients sent to the owner and no raise for past 4 years. U make 50 when I should be at 70+ at this point. So time to go hunting.

So all the desperate people who took "face-to-face marketing to management" jobs are going to get sick of going door to door selling siding and windows? That'd be great.

And the high probability that you will likely not be able to find anyone that is willing to pay you anywhere close to what you're worth is the reason why. Until something is done, the Great Suppression will continue.

I just finished a seasonal full-time temp gig loading trucks. Worked alongside of temp agency temps who were idiot clock-watching kids with smartphones. Ten bucks an hour all around. Might as well have been loading cotton on steamboats in 1859 as loading high-end A/V electronics on semi trailers.
