Couldn't they have saved the slideshow and just said "SIXTH STREET"?

There's a shiat load of bars in Austin.  It's a college town so of course many of them are going to be frequented by students on the weekend, but there's enough places that anyone should be able to find someplace they like.

From the sounds of it, this moron has a problem with all of them.  If you cant find a place to hang out in Austin you're most likely a social misfit, which is exactly what this guy sounds like.

I was wondering about that too. I unfortunately was dragged to a bunch of places on that list by an old boss who was (surprise!) a bit of a douche.

We quit going when Billy F got caught chasing coed tail. His wife divorced him and got the bar.
First thing she did was get rid of one of the 2 dart boards, and then she plastered the place with farking shamrocks.
It's a LONDON style bar, fer chrissakes, not IRISH, ya stupid bint.
I learned to throw darts in that bar. First time I beat some Aussie guy and he went apoplectic, I knew I could play cricket and win.

I never went farther than 5th when I visited.  Yeah, it's the hipsterish part of downtown, but I could see that the douche crews kept moving towards 6th.

I preferred Shan-gril-la and Liberty Bar overall.  Was only there for 3 nights.  I think we managed to hit up Sidebar, Casino El Camino, Red 7, Mohawk, Beauty Bar, and a few probably a few more.

Yeah, Beauty Bar is a hipster bar chain.  I know.  Wanna fight about it?

TFA about the Mean-Eyed Cat:There are some great dive bars in Austin (G&S Lounge, Deep Eddy's, and Donn's Depot come to mind) but bets can be confidently placed that none of them are on the busiest downtown street in the city. Mean-Eyed Cat is on 5th Street, not 6th (the "busiest downtown street in the city").

Donn's Depot: 1600 West 5th Street, Austin, TX 78703 (almost across the street from the Mean-Eyed Cat)

Yeah...you can probably get away with just saying "BOURBON STREET!!!" instead of writing up profiles for 25 individual bars if you were to do the same for New Orleans.

Austin is like New Orleans and Las Vegas: great in small doses. Have your fun for 48 or 72 hours then get the fark out.

I always spend 5 nights in Vegas because I'll invariably spend my days hungover in bed.  I really only get like 60 productive hours there.

I've been to the one in Atlanta.  10 years ago or so, it was an OKish Irish themed bar.  Now, they rebuilit it into a 4-story atrium where it's really hard to get a drink.  What kind of an Irish bar makes you wait in line to get a beer?  Would the Irish stand for that?

One night I reluctantly wandered into Cheers with some friends and the bartender said she would pour us a free a shot if we said "Highwave" enthusiasticlly. After some coaxing we were like "Highwave" yay. "Do it again" she said. Goddamit this is stupid but ok "Highwave". "One more time guys!", ok "Highwave". She then threw all the shots in our faces so I have no objection to that being on the list.

Not surprised to see just about all if 6th street there...

One of my fondest memories is watching a friend puke all over the floor at the aquarium, and ten getting himself kicked from the bar for that.

No, no, no. The way to do Vegas is 36 hours. Fly in Friday night, go nuts until 7 am and crash. Wake up around noon or 1 pm, go to the pool, gamble, drink, party, head to the airport and catch a 6am flight home. Sleep it off all day Sunday. Back to work Monday.

The biggest benefit is that if you lose your entire bankroll Friday night, you aren't stuck in Vegas for 3 days waiting for your flight.

A city full of 20-something bureaucrats with an overinflated sense of self importance and also home to 50,000+ college kids has some bars with douchbaggery going on?

I've been to plenty of bars in Austin and every bar is basically full of 20-something bureaucrats with an overinflated sense of self importance and 50,000+ college kids.

Also, I thought Mean-Eyed Cat closed in November or December. Is it still open? Am I thinking of a different dive bar?

Cool River Cafe

If you're over 30-years-old, and especially if you're sitting smack in the middle of a midlife crisis, you'll want to head way off the beaten the path to Cool River Cafe. They actually import the douchiness all the way from Dallas, where their sister restaurant dwells, but they excel in the balding-men-in-oversized-Tommy-Bahama-shirts-with-khakis, getting loud, and drunk, and hitting on waitresses department. On Thursday nights, the place turns into a veritable river of cougars, so pomade your hair back until it's slick and motionless, and come get some of that action. It is a restaurant and bar, and though not every menu item is fried, rest assured, there's plenty of grease and slime to go around.

I don't see the downside of this.

When I lived in Atlanta I used to go to Fado at the first location. I liked the place, but mostly when business was slow and the crowd was light. When it got crowded it was a total obnoxious nightmare. I'm not fond of the new version up the road, didn't impress me.

/Limerick Junction was a better pub, at least during my time there

If you ever come to Tampa (and I don't know why you would), Four Green Fields is the place for your Mick-fix.  MacDinton's is a meat market on Friday and Saturday nights and Dubliner is the default overflow bar when they stop letting people into MacD's.

I haven't been to the new James Joyce, but it went from a charming 2nd story apartment to a free-standing location so I'm sure all the charm is gone.

Casino is one of the places that I have to visit everytime I go back to Austin. Plus the Amarillo burger is tasty tasty. Back in the day we would grab ak slice of pizza at Hoeks and wash it down with a pint of Bass next door at the old Ritz poolhall. Ah good times.
