For the first time ever I almost wish I was a twitterer, so I could forward that to everyone, that's bloody hilarious.

To be fair, I think they thought the Titanic would be the catch. You know, like sinking the economy.

I mean, that much platinum would capsize Guam.

When you mint a coin that size, well, the Titanic has ways to just shut the whole thing down.

Wow and where are you going to get the giant who can carve President Fart's face into the huge platinum coin, Libs?

Anyone that thinks minting that coin is a plausible idea doesn't understand how much of anything works.

If we can pull this off, we can manage a coin.

I know. A coin with that much platinum would sink a goddamn ocean liner.

Can you imagine how much paper it would take to print a bill $100? That's like 20 reams of paper. How would you carry that?

The concept of fiat currency is taught in introductory macroeconomic courses. It's a critical concept to even begin to any understanding how the world of finance and economics functions.

I'm through poking fun. I want to highlight how incredibly fail-tacular this really is.

It would be akin to wanting to be a doctor who only realizes after 20 years in practice that you need a brain to live.

The NBC Nightly News "covered" this yesterday by showing clips of the Colbert Report and talking to a numismatist about the size of such a coin rather than actually explaining the theory behind the idea.

If I had any frame of reference for decent reporting, I would have wept.

LOL

Brian Dougherty @Bridoc10

@ezraklein @NRCC I had a $100 bill once, but it was so much heavier than the rest of my currency, I had to give it away.

Actually the tweeter is right. If we are going to the platinum standard, its gonna take a lot to mint a $1 Trillon dollar coin. Even more will be needed once they figure out how much welfare and taking care of old people costs the American taxpayer.

I don't understand.  How would you get the platinum coin to float, let alone get the Titanic to run into it?

The Crazy Horse memorial has been a huge cluster fark for over 60 years, so I'm not sure you could say it has in any way been "pulled off."

2013-01-09 01:32:56 PM
That's why they should mint it out of a trillion dollars worth of balloons! It would float the Titanic back up and get those job creators to port!

2013-01-09 01:34:00 PM
The guy who was primaried by the witch in Delaware crafted a law to accommodate coin collectors so platinum coins have fewer restrictions. Amusing but unlikely as Obama could theoretically just ignore Congress on the debt ceiling.

Ah, yes. I have a set of those: 100 trillion, 50 trillion, 20 trillion, 10 trillion, 5 trillion. When I asked the gf to marry me, I told her I was a trillionaire. She didn't believe me. When I whipped those bad boys out of my pocket, she had no choice but to say yes.

Ah.  Fair enough.

2013-01-09 02:03:01 PM
Instead of minting trillion dollar coins, Obama should make the US Treasury mint a bunch of million dollar coins, and about 20 billion dollar coins. Guaranteed, there will be some uber-rich assholes that will buy a bunch of those coins for even more than the mint value if they have to, just so they can show it off to their friends.

if the hindenberg were made out of $1T in platinum, it would take a balloon the size of vermont to get it off the ground. are you libs ready to take the blame for an explosion that big?

That's only 19,525 metric tons at $51,216/kg.  The DWT of Titanic is 13,767 tonnes, so it would take <6k tonnes of reserve buoyancy

That shouldn't sink it.  If you offloaded furnature I think you could do it without exceeding designed draught.
