"Scary" tag?

I remember the days when this would have been "Cool" or downright "Spiffy".

Sigh, what's become of us?

It's asteroids all the way down!

That asteroid, in turn, could be used as a base for further exploration to the moon or Mars.

A base the size of two double decker buses? Are we converting to a squirrelnaut space program?

2013-01-09 01:50:29 PM
It isn't that crazy. I would think it would be easier to hollow out and build upon a nice big metal asteroid than to launch all that mass into orbit.

It might be even easier just to put a base on the moon, mine and smelt the steel needed there, but I'm attracted to the idea of just hollowing out a small planetoid and turning it into a space ship.

I told you. Any headline placed in lunar orbit is unstable and may cause repeats.

I can think of plenty of candidates to drop it on.

"They" keep talking about how it can be used as a base for Mars exploration. How? It's the size of a pair of buses.

Remember, Obama's appointing Antoine de Saint-Exupéry to head NASA.

The size of two (2) double decker busses. And that is enough for a space base?
Neat. LOOK WHAT I CAN DO!!!

And even that wasn't the first one...or the second...

probably a communications relay.

And why the Scary, submittard? That would completely burn up in atmo if NASA somehow got their math horribly wrong. There is no danger here;

The heechee saga had this as well as ender's game. I would've posted awesome stolen pics, but I am on my phone.

Oh yeah, eon did this as well.

They aren't going to orbit an asteroid...

What we need is a mass the size of earth in orbit around earth so we can orbitally accelerate a craft fast enough to reach another solar system. Not as big, necessarily, but a similar mass

2013-01-09 02:18:16 PM
So, essentially it's the outer space version of the ball in the cup game.

2013-01-09 02:18:45 PM
Also, please put a camera and telescope on a periodic comet and record everything until it comes back and download that shiat

This would have some ...interesting... gravitational effects.

2013-01-09 02:48:02 PM
It wouldn't have a stable orbit due to the Earth's gravitational field constantly tugging on it.

Scary? Try damned nifty--once we can lasso 'em, we can mine 'em, and then it's just a step away to proper mobile suits and such :D

In all seriousness, though, once we can do this it WILL make getting out into space easier--as someone noted, you can hollow the things out and use them for colonies or even generation ships, and we can mine them...

/don't make me break out "Der Zabi's Face", kids
