Poor kitties.  Ugliness combined with trashy breed snobbery.  You don't adopt a pet as a status symbol or to show that you're "different" from others.  Everyone in the trailer park  has to have some exotic pet.

There's a completely ordinary grey tabby next to me.  Someone dumped her in the alley.  I kept her because we get on well, not so I can brag to others.

This is more like if Gollum had a kid with Mr. Bigglesworth.

Except the breeder bred them specifically because she was allergic to cat hair, but heartbroken by the poor health of the highly inbred hairless breeds available. So she crossed them with a rugged, healthy breed known for it's affectionate personality. I'm not quite sure what article you think you read, but sometimes it helps to read the actual words instead of the story you made up in your head.

Since you already went there, I'll pile on

Karen Nelson from the United States who created the breed wanted to combine the traits of the Sphynx and the American Curl to create a cat which is a sociable, affectionate and highly active.

You are a silly, vain woman, who's making a bunch of animals that are adding to a very overpopulated cat world, just so you can make a name and money for yourself, and have a status symbol.

Pet breeders should all have to go work in a shelter and put perfectly good dogs and cats down while they're waiting for someone to call them and pay them $1500 for a freaking cat.

At 2k per cat I don't think there is much truth to this...

I have a friend who has 3 of those hairless cats (an old girlfriend of his was a breeder, so he luckily got them free, didn't pay out the nose for them like lots of people do). I went to stay with him once and I learned that those things don't clean themselves. They don't have fur, so they don't learn to lick themselves like regular cats... which means they also don't learn to lick their asses after going to the litter box. Then, their asses get all itchy from left over crap, so they drag them along the carpet of course... or in one case, across my jacket.

Won't be visiting him again unless I stay in a hotel, or he gets a bigger place where there is an extra bedroom the cats are not allowed in that I can put all my stuff and sleep in.

It was the original reason for the breed. Not a lot of people breed them though, which is the reason for the price. Not worth it to me.

FTFA: Breed specifications state Elf Cats should be of medium to large size, weighing from 3.6kg up to 6.8kg. The curve of their ears should be between 90 up to 180 degrees

Just wondering - is there any rhyme or reason to these "official" breed specs? I've seen them described for different animals and have wondered if they're based on any specific principles or if they're just arbitrary factors determined by the whims of the first person to ever decide upon them, and subsequently written in stone from that moment on.

For the purebread sphinx, yes. But the fact is she mixed the breeds and is now selling a commodity cat for absurd amounts of money. It was like the whole labradoodle and puggle phases. I assume she probably sells the kittens that don't come out with the "elf" look for peanuts or gives them away. Not trying to argue, I just get a little riled about the stupid things people do to animals. :P

Cat 'breeds'? The fact is that there are very, very few cats that are a pure breed.

I take it you think the society hands out new breed distinctions every time someone brings in a first generation half-breed of two different breeds? I don't think it's quite that easy. Those tame foxes from Russia sell for a little bit more, iirc, but you could totally go find a random fox kit to domesticate yourself, so why pay more than 50 cents? The 45 generations of breeding it took to actually domesticate the foxes? Psh. Not your problem.
Also ignoring the cost of housing and upkeep on enough of them to create a viable and stable population without immediately descending back into the same inbreeding that led to the poor health of the original hairless breeds.

The breed specs for various breeds are largely based on the original purpose of that breed being bred (at least in dogs and horses) and also on what makes breed x different from breed y bred for the same thing.

I just want to say I adopted a Japanese Bobtail, and she is the cutest and most affectionate kitty ever. She's a tiny squeaky little thing, and has completely changed my opinion on cats as pets.

A friend of mine has a sphinx-like cat. She isn't bald, she has very very short, fine, shiny grey-black fur, and she is tiny and lithe and perfect. And she must get cold, because she is like velcro, total sweet little lap kitty that is at her very happiest cuddled up on or up against a nice warm human.

My cat on the other hand is half Manx, half Maine Coon, 25lbs, as orange as a construction cone, hairier than Bigfoot and tries to act the same way, except he gets mad if you stop loving on him and will swat and bite your hand if you try and stop.

Still like the cranky bastard.

Disagree. Although I always get my pets from shelters or rescue situations, I have no problem with good-quality breeders who breed healthy, well-cared-for animals. There's always going to be a market there, after all - you'd probably have more luck convincing every college fratboy to stop drinking than you would convincing every person to rescue instead of buy - and it's much better to have good breeders than bad ones.

Now, unscrupulous breeders who treat their pets like shiat or breed for potentially dangerous traits? Abso-farking-lutely.
