People have thought my Boston Terrier is a pitbull. Adults are usually the ones that ask as they shield their children/dogs against his vicious attempts to fall at their feet for belly rubs.

I'm not sure what was seen as wrong with the standard poodle. As long as you get a sheep style haircut it looks fine and they have a great personality (and are rather intelligent). The standard poodle was selected to hunt bears in Germany and doesn't have any of the annoying personality traits of the smaller poodle options.
