It means that people are easily entertained by the bland and inoffensive?

My S.O. loves that show. I have no idea what she sees in it, other than her interest in forensics. They don't even appear to get that part right. But oh well.

Redemption: she likes football, so we can at least enjoy that together.

No one cares, but hey.  Glad some part of society is happy, and those folks have a job. Never interested me, I tried.

My wife used to like that show, but then again, her taste has always been a bit suspect.

My wife likes the show.  I've watched it a few times, it's okay but it really didn't suck me in.  She enjoys watching it so that's really all that matters.

My favorite episode is the one where the pathologist and the FBI agent show a bunch sexual tension

I am interested in the forensic aspect of this show, but anything they attempt to do an actual storyline it just flat out blows. Especially this past season.

The first few seasons were pretty decent, the interactions between Booth (and the male administrator in Season 1) and all of the people at the Jeffersonian primarily. Kind of fell apart when they all started farking each other, and when they basically turned Booth into Superman.

Used to watch it regularly, but this show seriously needs to die off soon. It's been pretty stale for a couple of seasons now.

Bones is fair to good with moments of brilliance. The episode they showed last November around Veterans Day called "The Patriot in Purgatory" was superb.

Did they ever have the two good looking leads bang, or have they managed to carry on a ship tease for that long?

I tried to watch, but that Asian-Hispanic-Baltic character is just awful.

My wife loves the show and I give her a hard time about how repetitive it is. I came up with my own checklist of things to look for before I leave the room:

Absolutely gorgeous black woman wearing tight dress in forensic lab furrows her brow at something.

Curly blond scientist builds wacky contraption or makes cutesy talk with his girlfriend.

Bones acts like a robot (ex) "Bones, we'll finish this case when pigs fly." Bones' response "Well, technically, even if they had wings, it would be impossible for pigs to carry that weight, unless they had giant wings." Everyone..."Oh YOU!!"

Annoyingly annoying psychiatrist douchebag does something annoying.

I left the room last night in five minutes.

Bones is kinda like House - one of those shows where it's better to watch a bunch of episodes in a row instead of once a week. The formulaic nature becomes invisible and the character development/dialog becomes the main focus that way. And the new episodes aren't great, but they're still better than most things on TV. Just wish they would ditch the 2-minute Toyota commercials built into every other episode's dialog.

Sybarite: Did they ever have the two good looking leads bang, or have they managed to carry on a ship tease for that long?

Yeah, they live together and have a kid now. It's worth catching up - just skip the episode where she actually gives birth.

The first time they did one of those, I had to rewind to make sure I really saw what I thought I did. That shows are doing these kind of "ads" now is not surprising, Fringe has been doing it with Nissan's in Season 4 I've been tearing through. But that they chose to do it so obviously and heavy-handed was really amazing.

"Wow, you must have paid a fortune for this much trunk space and head-room in your new 2011 Toyota Prius!"
"No, that's the best thing, it's reasonably priced at $19,995 MSRP!"

Season 9 ? I am looking forward to the 'alternate universe' episode, the 'evil twin' episode and the famous 'it was all a dream' episode.

/ Have they had the 'cartoon animal in the show' episode yet?

I don't know about the rest, but they did have a cartoon character in the show a few years back. I think it was Stewie from Family Guy.

Bones is not a bad show.

I got through quite a few seasons of Bones, but had to stop watching once she had a kid and started being a dumb-ass about her dad and the kid.

"You left me when I was 15 years-old, and thus old enough to be self-sufficient, therefore I can't trust you to babysit an infant!"

Plus the episode with Clea Duvall bugged me because they gave the killer absolutely zero motive.

If you watch it and just sort of assume it is a straight up sitcom it is a lot more watchable. A good portion of the storylines, not to mention how the characters interact with each other make it is super hard to accept this as a serious drama series about professional people working in a lab to solve serious crimes. The only problem is my wife hasn't accepted that format yet and gets annoyed with me when I laugh at stuff that wasn't a joke.

Damn near. The one I remember in particular, Bones and Angela needed to go somewhere quickly, so they went to get Angela's car. It was something like:

Bones: Oh, you got a new Toyota Prius!
Angela: Yeah, I love it, it has so much interior space.
Bones: And the trunk is very spacious!
Angela: Which I love, being an artist, I can easily transport all of my supplies.

Something like that. There was another one where a character uses some kind of hands-free system in their Toyota to play music or get directions that's equally as bad. They're a good 20-30 seconds of show, characters just fawning over their vehicles features.

Yeah, they never adequately explained that. I believe that was the season with the writer's strike though, so I always figured there was some long drawn out arc they had planned, which then had to be cut due to the strike.

Either that, or the writers just wrote themselves into a corner... or that actor wanted to leave the show.

I tried watching it a few time searly on and would invariably fall asleep 20 minutes in.

It's a mediocre show... that's why it has nine seasons. If it was a good show, it'd be lucky to get one. if it was a bad show, it'd probably get 2 or 3.

It's pretty much all Fox has left in the drama department.

It made it through the years when it was one of the lower rated shows on Fox to now be the oldest, most successful "drama" they have left.

/but not as much comedy as Psych.

I like it... I used to like it more, but they are getting way too predictable in three major ways:

1. It's never the first person they suspect, it's almost never the second. It's usually the third person, and that person doesn't surface until the last 20 minutes of the show.

2. Bones is guaranteed to not 'get' a joke, or to biatch about Psychology while explaining how some ancient tribe in Papua, New Guinea does something or other, based on nothing more than someone being able to figure out crowd psychology long ago. She will also insult someone by either calling them stupid in a "nice" way, or by telling them that they can't help the way they act, and then cite evidence from some ancient race of man that supports this insulting assertion.

3. Someone's personal relationship[ with another core member of the cast will suffer, whether it's husband/wife, boyfriend/girlfriend, or just friends. This will always get resolved at the end of the episode.

It's still fun to watch, but mostly because I've watched it this long, and feel like I'm unfaithful if I leave early.

It made sense for the show as a whole I'm sure, since Bones and Zach shared a lot of the same character qualities. But yeah, that one kind of pissed me off too.

I do kind of wish they would have kept him on in a semi-permanent role though, "consulting" on cases all the time, and maybe explore whether he could be rehabilitated and what this might mean to the character. They touched on it I think at one point, implying that he really didn't actually kill anyone, but they kind of went with a "You can't tell anyone" cop out and never came back to it.

Blame modern television. If you've got a show that can pull a reliable number, you hold onto it like gold. Why do you think The Simpsons is approaching 30 years?

Or it is the first person they talk to, but they give you no clues that the person might be guilty, and pull something out of their asses at like minute 40 (Hey, it turns out that professor we talked to first spent 4 years in a mental institution for slaughtering small animals! You think that might be significant?)

Yea they seem to want to make it a drama with comedy elements in it. But next time you watch it assume that it is all comedy (since most of the cases and relationships are usually super over the top anyways) and to me at least it becomes much more watchable.

Ha... I don't mind Firefly, but wouldn't have ever called myself a fan. I never even saw the show until I met my wife who has it on DVD. Enjoyable, but I actually prefer Castle to it.

I have seen other shows I liked not end up lasting very long though. I thought Wonderfalls was fun, and it didn't last. I've only seen a couple of the Freaks and Geeks show, but it seemed up my alley as well.

To be fair, there are shows that I like that do last as well. Criminal Minds can be good, though it's getting stale now as well. Fringe was interesting, but it really should have just ended when Peter "died". Burn Notice can still be fun, but it's kinda jumped the shark and got a little dark this season.

I used to watch that show, until they got married and half of every program got filled with their personal life problems and situations, on top of everyone else's personal lives in the show.  Kind of hard to tell a convincing storyline in the 15 minutes they had left for the actual crime they were trying to solve.

While there are a number of good shows that were killed off before their time, these days most really good shows go to cable and get at least two seasons to perform.

The bigger problem now seems to be good shows turning to shiat because the networks don't want to let their last cash cows go. Some are saying Bones is suffering from that problem (I don't agree). I can definitely say, though, that House was left on the air at least a season too long, if not three seasons.

Yes as soon as he started banging Cuddy they were dead. Also killing off Cutt Throat biatch was not a good idea.

I actually haven't watched the full last season of House yet. I watched the first 3 or 4 episodes, but House without Cuddy just seemed off. Wilson was never as good a foil as she was. It did go on too long though. They could have ended it when he went into or came out of rehab and that would have been a good run.

Once a show has enough of a following to hit 4 or 5 seasons though, I can imagine it's hard for a network to cut it. Those shows are the ones bringing in the money. New shows are usually a crap shoot, so as a network, you need some stable revenue coming in to fund those new ventures to find your next stable revenue source.

Well if the Simpsons started today, there is no way Fox would give James L Brooks and the writing team complete creative control (they don't have to abide by the creative notes Fox gives them), so the episodes would probably totally suck.

2013-01-09 10:36:26 AM
It's not a terrible show compared to most of the other broadcast shows, but they have a horrible history of bad writers or writers who don't know how to follow previous plots or timelines.

So Toyota has bought another 22 hour long commercials.

I really don't mind product placement in movies and TV shows, especially when they fit into the story line, but Bones they are just so over the top, forced and don't fit into the storyline at all.

The best ones are in Psych, probably since the writers are actually clever.
