FYI you are gonna crap your aerodynamically designed biker uni once you see the new Edge 510.

Carry on a few more letters.

It wasn't with my previous 500 or 300 or whatever I had before, that was almost identical to the 500 but had a much shiattier mount (attatchment mechanism) to the bike

I used to run with it and take it snowboarding once, and (I'm guessing) the battery inside became a little loose and then whenever thingsgot bumpy it turned itself off. It was like internally the battery didn't always make a clean connection, so it was wholly useless after that even though it still technically woerked 95% of the time.

that's just silly
just because it doesn't work while it's in your possession doesn't make it worthless
if you want to get a refurbed one cheap send it in

But it was uselss, having it turn off half a dozen times on a ride meant I never got accurate stats when I got home. Never knew how far I rode, couldn't record time and other stats properly. it ceased to be a useful training tool and fell back to being a normal spedometer (most of the time)
sometimes I wouldn't notice it was off for like 5 miles.

My bad, I was going off of the top o my head, because I was foccussing on my alphabet bomb.
I considered a refurb, but for only double that cost I got myself the 500. Which as we both know is amazing.
And I wasn't really keen on getting the same one again, that had just dissapointed me so utterly.
Although I have to grant it, I have pretty horrible luck with electronics. Any and all electronics, and that edge, even though it broke, was the longest lasting (working) single piece of electronics that I had ever owned

how does the 510 improve so much on the 500? So much so that it's worth spreading the word like this?

Like I said, it was useless on your bike. You could have gotten a useful one for like 60 bucks if you would have sent that one back.

i'm not really trying to spread the word so much, as i just got to check one out and the more i think about it, i don't really think there is anything to it that you, personally, would need

I think the 500 is so much better and so much more reliable that I absolutely have no regrets. Especially after getting my powertap  last xmas and building myself a powertap rear wheel, I felt the 305 would probably break again in the same way, and I had never liked the way it mounted to the bike, too easy to have it fall off riding (which has happened to two coworkers) one of which had a car run it over after it fell off of the bike rifing in a charity ride.

Anyways, what's the deal with the 510? I'm reading a review now as I talk to you , but I wanna head from you too,

don't take this the wrong way; I can;t twll if you are simply changing your mind, or if this is some kinda sarcastic snub. My sarcasm meter is way busted and I've been pretty depressed since xmas so I'm not reading things right.
MY b-day always depresses me, and I was kicked outa my parents house on xmas for reasons I don't understand. In addition to hearing my dad say to my mom, "you can go too Sally, you f*cking parasite."
So, I'm pretty outta it, but I guess I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you simply changed your mind.

The quarter turn mount, whie being one of the biggest differentiaters from the 305, is like the greatest thing EVAR. I absolutely love it, and I have so much more confidence in it than I had in the 305... hated that guy, and was always scared by it.

A few things jump out at me...

Live Tracking:

Live tracking allows one of 'your peoples' to track you.  Or perhaps, a lot of peoples.  Within the tracking, they'll get your little blue dot on a map, as well as your past track and your current ANT+ sensor data (Cadence/Heart Rate/Power/Speed), plus information such as total activity time and average speed (and avg pace for runners!).
this would be so cool for my mom, who worries a lot *(still) when I ride. this way she could know where I am, what I['m doing and that I'm safe, and best yet could help id something happened.

www.dcrainmaker.com

this is so much better than tossing it in my jersey pocket and periodically grabbing it to lok at it, or just looking at the stats after my run is over.

You were right, this sounds amazingl When the day comes that I finally get myself a smart phone, I'll have to seriously consider (and likely will) buy myself one of these guys, thanks!

It's not so useful to me yet... but soemday there will be a phone I can;t break, and when there is one, I will buy the phone and the 510,

I suppose this response  was a bit duplicitous. But I wanted to reply to this post anyways.
