It's a double bluff?

Iran: We like Hagel
Senator 1: If Iran likes Hagel, we should reject him.
Senator 2: Not so fast. It Iran says they like Hagel, they must want us to reject him.
Senator 1: We'd better approve him then,
Senator 2: Agreed
Iran: (Good, good.)

And, in a perfect world reasonable country, Iran's opinion of the guy would matter just as much as Israel's opinion of the guy.

Who farking cares?

Yeah, let's all bow down to farking Israel, and give them more of our taxpayer dollars.

Iran endorsed him? On what basis - anti-Semitism?

I think the charge of "anti-semitism" is pretty serious. When people start calling everyone who disagrees with them "anti-semitic", it waters down the true meaning, importance, and history of actual anti-semitism.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't take the rare triple bluff to get a Republican Senator's tongue on a pole...

Only slightly less rare than the complex triple lindy

Never go against an Iranian when international trolling is on the line.

I hear Pol Pot sent Hagel a pallet of plastic bags.

Just a wide stance.

Since when is the Sec of Defense responsible for foreign policy anyway? Doesn't State do that?

Chuck Hagel doesn't shop at Whole Foods. Therefore his nomination is a slap in the face of all Democrats

It might be nice if other countries like Iran and Israel stopped interfering in our domestic political affairs. However, at least in the case of Iran, they are still pretty miffed about the U.S. overthrowing their government with Operation Ajax during the Cold War.

In this case "Anti Semite" apparently means someone who has the temerity to criticize the fact that one of the most powerful lobbying groups in America is devoted to ensuring American politicians put the interests of foreign nationals above the interests of their own constituents.

MisterLoki: Israel Vows To Use Veto Power If Chuck Hagel Confirmed As U.S. Secretary Of Defense

"Because congress does not possess the necessary nine-tenths majority to override an Israeli veto, they'll have no choice but to head back to the drawing board and provide a Defense Secretary whom we find more suitable "

Oh Lawd....

The world has gone upside down. Dogs and cats living together. Republicans voicing support for gays and Jews. Mass hysteria.

I'm not afraid of Iran.

There I said it, whew

Elliott Abrams was concern-trolling that on NPR last night. Yeah, if a guy who dealt missiles to Hezbollah calls you anti-Semitic, I guess that's pretty harsh.

Well Iran does have a better track record of not illegally selling American military hardware to China than Israel does. Maybe we need to question who our allies in the region really are.

/trick question, they all suck

I like how the Zionists get all biatchy over quotes like this:

""The Israeli government essentially continues to play games... Desperate men do desperate things when you take hope away. And that's where the Palestinians are today.""

How dare he make accurate comments on Israel's politics and basic human nature.

The ol', "Look he's so bad, even X doesn't like him" or "X approves of him, so why should we?" game.

The Joint Chiefs have a great deal of input into those decisions.

Iranian hardliners: "Death to America!"

US hardliners: "Glass parking lot!"

It's exactly the same farking mindset. Is it any wonder that the Iranians are happy that a relative moderate got the job?

*might* get the job.

I remember Iran also endorsing George W. Bush in 2004... maybe it is a pattern.

In practice, of course. In strict legal theory, JCOS takes orders from SecDef. I hope we never see any big tests of the absolute civilian control of the military.
