I'm thinking "every child in North Korea" doesn't count the million children who essentially live as slaves on the farms because their parents weren't loyal enough (and even if everyone was loyal, some wouldn't be loyal enough because there isn't enough food for everyone).

And how insensitive is it to give a starving malnourished child candy anyway? The most the kid can get from it is a headache and body shakes.

They are candy kisses, they are awesome when fresh and I won't have this talk in my house young man. But yeah most of the ones you get on hallowe'en are stale as fark and totally inedible.

just hope they weren't given 'Atkinsons Peanut Butter Bars' because those things are addictive!
A friend of mine sent me a small bag for Christmas and now he's worked up a sweat because I've got my mother hooked on them and we need more thankyouverymuchindeedlydo!!

Seriously though, it's a wonderful gesture. One can only hope Kim Jong Un has more of a working heart than his father and grandfather before him.

According to the article, the candy was only distributed to school children through the school system. So... yeah, only those who attend public school would benefit.

Also, it says that this is a yearly tradition started in 1980, its not something new.

They have been doing this since the 80s. I'm not sure if his dad practiced this but his grandfather did. Also, I found this, which amused me:

But the Korean word for eighteen, 'sippal', happens to be a homophone of the swear-word 'f**king'. Pyongyang residents have decided to take advantage of this pun. They are referring to Kim Jong-un's birthday as the 'f**king birthday celebrations', and compulsory apple-picking days as 'f**king Apple-Picking Days'.

If you think the kids shown in any officially released video look malnourished or inordinately happy, just remember that they are the ones in good enough shape and with the right attitude to even make it on to an officially released video. I didn't really see anything wrong with any of them in the video linked. I mean, except for the fact that they live in North Korea.
