SilentStrider: Well the money the kids win in the lawsuit will certainly help put them through college.
fusillade762: Newt Gingrich approves.
morg: Darren Clink, who lives next to the former Y, used a camera to shoot video of the students and others taking debris out of the building...Clink, who removes asbestos for a living, says his concern for the students has turned to anger at school officials.Damn convenient to live right by the school that screwed you out of a job in favor of free (and soon to be dead) labor.
phartman: Asbestos is dangerous only if is a certain particle size. Otherwise it is inert.
Gyrfalcon: Pretty unlikely. Asbestosis, while a killer, isn't caused by a few days exposure to the levels likely to be present in a demolition site. It can take up to 20 years for symptoms to develop even in people whose jobs consisted of chronic, daily exposure in an industrial setting. ( Source: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001177/) Otherwise healthy kids breathing some dust outdoors for two or three days are probably not in any danger.Which doesn't let the school officials off the hook. They should be sued right out of their holy socks. But don't go burying the kids yet. They should be just fine.
Snarcoleptic_Hoosier: I'm more concerned with the idea that high schoolers can be trusted with crowbars and saws to NOT destroy something important.
video man: Snarcoleptic_Hoosier: I'm more concerned with the idea that high schoolers can be trusted with crowbars and saws to NOT destroy something important.Yeah, 16-year-old me would've taken a good shot at the wall with the crowbar when no one was looking.

YOU WANT ME TO CLEAR OUT FARKING ASBESTOS! WITH OUT ANY SAFETY GEAR!?"
Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: Shocking that the footage was recorded by a "concerned citizen" who just happens to own an asbestos removal company. I'm sure that was just a koinkidink.
They're skilled asbestos workers. They're essential.
What Asbestos may look like..
justoneznot: but how is it that the guy that just so happened to video tape this is an asbestos removal guy?
Cozret: justoneznot: but how is it that the guy that just so happened to video tape this is an asbestos removal guy?Well, you see, it's a service people need, and so people start businesses that provide that service, and the people who run and work for that company use the money they make to buy homes. So when a trained asbestos employee stepped out of his home, looked across the way, and saw what was going on he was able to identify the a safety hazard most people would not have noticed. . .honestly, you need this explained?
justoneznot: The guy that called the authorities on them is someone that removes asbestos for a living. I wonder if there's a side story here where they declined his services, he felt snubbed and narked. Sure, this was incredibly stupid and they need to be punished, but how is it that the guy that just so happened to video tape this is an asbestos removal guy?
20/20: 14th thing people should stop doing this year: stop putting auto-play videos on websites.
bubbernuts: [intensities.files.wordpress.com image 384x288]All kids, all abestos, all the time!
ReapTheChaos: Wow, some of you people are just ignorant. The symptoms of asbestos related diseases may take 20 or more years to show up, but that doesn't mean you need to be exposed for that long or to large amounts of asbestos to get them.
