Insatiable Jesus: This is how we should fight wars in the future, with drones. At the end of each month, a winner is declared and the loser has to give up 5 of its politicians for public execution. It's full of win.

I think you need to go watch Robot Jox my friend.

Outstanding! Pretty much sums up my thoughts as well.

Myria: Also, the U.S. is friendly with most of its former war enemies. England, Mexico, Spain, Germany, Austria, Italy, Japan.

Whitey sticks together. Or builds bases in non-whitey's territory to enforce friendship.

crab66: tolallorti: mbillips: Yeah, you know what, China? You do not want to revisit 1931-1945. You do not want to poke that hornet's nest. I know you're all making money, and having a third of your population all "middle class" and that, and you've got all that semi-modern, fake Soviet military tech, but you do not want to fark with the Nipponese.Especially with Uncle Sam having their back.

I doubt the U.S. would get involved other than materiel support. any war with china would disrupt the United States economy greatly and would most likely involve large numbers of casualties on both sides.

Furthermore with what Japan has done to China/Korea/practically any other country they've interacted with historically I don't have much sympathy for Japanese imperialism.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

inform me then.

The united states is tied up with china fairly heavily economically, so while they aren't allies it wouldn't be wise to fight them directly.

As to japanese and chinese affairs I'll admit I'm not an expert, but there's some cultural animosity that goes back a long way and at least from my understanding Japan has traditionally been the aggressor.

SuperNinjaToad: I would hazard a guess that 99% of non Asian Americans can't even physically tell the difference between a Japanese and a Chinese.

I wouldn't be so sure... Japanese are really, really seriously big on racial purity, so much so that 3rd generation Japanese citizens whose grandparents immigrated from Korea, people with Japanese names, born in Japan, speak fluent Japanese, and at most a tenuous connection to Korea, are not permitted to vote or hold public office because they are not Japanese.

China, meanwhile... is an amalgamation of about 12 or 13 (I forget) ethnic groups all pulled in to the communist superpower.

And, willful ignorance aside, it's really not that difficult to shoot people wearing Chinese army uniforms as opposed to Japanese SDF uniforms.

Yeah but millions of young American males consume Japanese pr0n. That's something worth fighting for. China doesn't produce any. Godless commies.

what are you??? a freking yellow lover? What's wrong with good ole American porn with the occasional midget and 44DDDs thrown in ?

The loss of Japanese pr0n and that whole "WTF Japan" subculture that has kept us entertained for so long would be devastating. What happens if we lose China? We'll have to pay more for t-shirts and iPhones.

More to the point, we cannot allow a censorship-heavy country like China to have control over the world's primary source of magical girls and tentacle rape anime.

In the grand scheme it's not the in U.S. long-term interest to allow China to dominate the Far East the way Russia influences Eastern Europe. The short term pain of going to war with China would be significant but its better than the slow decline and ceding of U.S. influence in APAC. We're no where close to that now but if we ever needed a pretext to knock China down a peg or two we have our alliance with Japan to provide it.

Yeah, I'd be willing to bet that most of the Asia Pacific would gang up on Japan if it got down to brass tacks.

The Philippines, for all the horrors Japan inflicted on it during World War 2, is more worried about China than Japan at this point. Their foreign minister even said they'd be okay with a rearmed Japan.

Apart from when it's very obvious, Japanese and Chinese people can't physically tell the difference between a Japanese and Chinese person.  Seriously.  They all say they can, and fail every damn time.

Take a little trip over to the facial recognition quiz at alllooksame.com and see how you fare.

I don't think China can count on any Shaolin monks to fight for them. Just a hunch.

Yeah, the Japanese open restaurants with actual Japanese names, instead of just "China Wok" or "Great Wall" or something "Garden".

Party of me thinks the Communist Chinese want to pick a fight with someone other than the US to show us how tough their military is.

Considering their military got farked by the reunited Vietnamese and the fact that the PRC fought over disputed territories with the Indian military, it might be interesting to see what happens to the Chinese military when it faces off against someone with amazing weapons and an urge to shoot first really early.

HMS_Blinkin: Myria: Why is it that China has an eternal hatred of Japan for their pre-WW2 atrocities, whereas the same is not true for Germany in Europe?

The whole China vs. Japan thing goes back a lot longer than anything from Europe.

I dunno, Russia v. Everyone Else is a pretty old European rivalry. England and Russia sort of got along for quite a while, mainly on a shared hatred of France and Germany.

The Japanese really don't take it kindly when you point out that Japan was colonized by ethnic Chinese, who replaced the native Ainu population. So modern Japanese are just a mixture of Chinese and Ainu.

This text is now purple: Russia v. Everyone Else is a pretty old European rivalry

Russia is a relatively new euro country. It did not exist when China and Japan started scrapping. (it expanded from a principality around the time Columbus got his ass lost in the atlantic)

But somehow I doubt you give a shiat about history.

Myria: Why is it that China has an eternal hatred of Japan for their pre-WW2 atrocities, whereas the same is not true for Germany in Europe?

Maybe because Germany owns up to what it did, whereas Japan denies their atrocities to this day, and teaches their schoolchildren that they never happened.  Or maybe because Japanese prime ministers go pay respects to their war criminals every year.

part of me thinks you're a trigger happy redneck who needs to brush up on world history. What makes you automatically assume China is always the aggressor? If you look at the history of the two countries, Japan is by far the more aggressive one who usually starts shiat first.

This probably isn't true.  There's been pretty widespread agreement recently that Japan was likely colonized by one or two nomadic horse-riding tribes who learned rice farming in Korea (but were not Korean themselves, more likely from Mongolia) before heading to the islands to wipe out the Ainu.

I think the holding office bit is only for the National Diet and cabinet positions.  We've got a Brazilian legislator in my prefecture, and as a foreigner, I can vote in most local elections.

The largest islet is 4.32 KMs. Some of these 'islands' are literally boulders sunk into the ocean. If it weren't such a point of national pride, I'd say fark it and let Taiwan have it, just to piss China off.

The land isn't just the issue. The various treaties involving mineral rights, fishing rights, etc. plus royalties and fees for all those rights adds up to some (mainly) future profit. If I, as a country, have a speck of land way out in the ocean, I can claim a large area around it (determined by treaties) as my water and control everything within it. That's the big issue here. Most of the rest is just posturing.

You REALLY have no idea what you're talking about. Our military budget is @ 10 times what China's is, with a long legacy of greater denominators reaching into the past. They have no navy to speak of ( a few destroyers and subs, an obsolete jumpjet carrier less capable than our flat top amphibs). Most of their air force is '70s tech. Yeah, sure, it would do us little good to try to defeat their army in a land war, but on the sea and in the air? Chinee, please.
