(Gawker)   CCW fan who hoped that someone would try to shoot up a place he was in has been found dead. Of a gunshot wound. Inflicted by someone else. Clearly the problem is that everyone needs to carry at least TWO firearms at all times   (gawker.com) divider line 459

Of all the gun control laws that ought to be made, I think there ought to be a farking proficiency test like there is with cars.  If you apply to purchase a gun you have to be tested with it to see if you can use it properly and effectively.  If you unload a 30 round clip at a target van 50 yards away and only hit it 5 times, sorry....you don't get to have a gun.

Yeah, because negligent discharges account for so much crime / murder.

Being able to hit something with your gun is, by all means, a good thing to know, but it does nothing to stop criminals from buying guns.

Oh, and it's worth noting that many states require you to show proficiency to get a CCW. Some don't. In states where it isn't required, even within some states, some classes require it, or particular teachers throw it in.

Personally? I got a CCW specifically to skip waiting periods. Since having a CCW for years I've literally done it a handful of times.

If I had a CCW, I wouldn't go around bragging about having one. It's called

If you are going to go around and tell everyone you have one, why not just
carry it "Matt Dillon Gunsmoke" style on a belt around your waist?

You may be on to something...

There is a bunch of derp that this was done to make an "example" for supporting gun rights, but this is the best speculation to me.

I would think more people would be in favor of Open Carry than Concealed. I seen how cops tackle first in CCW counties and then ask questions later.

topcon: Oh, and it's worth noting that many states require you to show proficiency to get a CCW. Some don't. In states where it isn't required, even within some states, some classes require it, or particular teachers throw it in.

Some do, but a lot have basically no requirements whatsoever to get a CCW. For instance, Indiana has no requirements beyond paperwork and fingerprints, they issue to non-residents, and because of reciprocity, most other states will honor their permits. The idea that CCW permit holders are somehow more proficient with their firearms is an utter farce.

I'm willing to go with that. Either that or he had a fight with a friend or somebody he knew and it ended with a head shot and the other person high tailed it.

That's called open carry, and is a legal option in many states. The reason you wouldn't do that while concealed carrying is because open carrying reveals that you're armed, while the purpose of concealed carry is to hide that fact.

Again, I fail to see where this is a major issue. While there's a good reason to actually know how to shoot, there isn't a bunch of stories in the news about errant CCW holders blasting up a restaurant and firing stray shots all over the place.

Unlawful shootings by CCW permit holders happen all the farking time. You don't hear about it because the press has to dig to find out if someone has a permit, and unless the story is otherwise newsworthy, they don't bother.
