imthefonze: My only question is how would that be enforced? Not being a dick, im curious.

In most countries that have such laws, you have a mixture of scheduled and unscheduled inspections of the premises where the firearms are to be stored.  If you fail, then either you are hit with a fine or you lose your firearm license.

Yeah, I can only imagine how poorly that would fly in this country since many people who own firearms are very paranoid about the government.  They'd probably burst a blood vessel if they had to allow government inspectors into their homes.

That really is weird. Because what I definitely see in these threads is that anti-gun people are obsessed with penis size (in every single thread), think about the children a little too often, and panic over stuff that has been around for decades and never used in a crime, while crime is falling steadily. I have yet to see a single coherent rational argument from someone who wants to further restrict guns. Mostly it's the "think of the children!!!" argument used to back up the TSA and anti-abortion arguments also.

Accusing anti-gun people of being obsessed with penis size because they point out pro-gun people's obsession with replacing their small penises with guns is like accusing people who call out racists as being racist themselves. It makes you look stupid, in a "no, YOUR mom" kind of way.

This wasn't some guy she just met, it was her son.

You can't reason with people on the internet.

I will say that I agree that people should have safes to keep their guns in and protect them from theft, BUT the idea of mandating one to prevent something what happened in CT is another feelgood measure.

People get hung up on the fact that he had access, well he lived there and shot guns with her. She may have thought his mental 'temperament' was just something he'd just grow out of-he'd leave the house, meet a nice girl, that kind of stuff.

The one thing that can come out of this is hopefully people near that frame of mind with a conscience can do a little self awareness checking and think 'maybe I'm not OK and should see someone' AND people around this person may be a little more proactive in steering the person towards help.

Bull. That's a specious statement.
Oxford English Dictionary "regulate"
Origin: late Middle English (in the sense 'control by rules'): from late Latin regulat- 'directed, regulated', from the verb regulare, from Latin regula 'rule'

The Founders used "regulated" in the same sense and way that we do. They also used the word "discipline (Article I Section 8) in the same sense we do.

duffblue: imthefonze: duffblue: Rik01: I've been to a few 'gun shows' over the years and discovered that, apparently, nearly any semiautomatic rifle can be 'modified' to full auto or close to it.

Usually, you can buy kits to do this from other dealers who legally sell them separate from the weapon. Back then, you could. Not now -- at least while identified as a conversion kit. Call them spare parts and sell away. Another booth will sell you the printed installation instructions.

All of this under the eyes of cops, who patrol the shows.

The 'duh' item I saw was a lever-like addition for a .22 rifle. Kind of like the lever on a lever action Winchester. You clipped it in place, a nob fit next to the trigger, cocked the gun and worked the lever with your fingers, while shouldering it. It never let the trigger fully return, meaning the gun was half cocked at all times, so as you pumped the lever, the weapon fired. The nob acted like a cam. The .22 went off like a machine gun.

The next legal gun I saw was a home built .22 machine gun, complete with tripod. It was legal because, like a gatling gun, you had to turn a crank on the side. The thing was fitted with an enormous barrel magazine -- like a Thompson submachine gun.

It just got rather creepy wandering around those shows because every vendor had a carry permit and was armed. Even old grandma sitting and knitting as grandpaw sold his assortment of high caliber pistols and big, heavy duty plastic bags of shiny new cartridges or reloads.

One thing about owning a gun, especially a high caliber, semiauto one, is you want to shoot it. The power to kill and injure at a distance is a strong lure. I've been to many a bar where drunk patrons got false courage because they were packing and folks got hurt.

TV and movies have brought the abilities of military weapons to our attention and, naturally, certain folks just gotta have one. If they could get their hands on RPG's, they'd stock up on 'em. (To be used for hunting, of course. Rabbits.)

Game wardens are forever confiscating military weapons from hunters who tried to sneak them into hunting grounds. Miss that deer on the first shot, and you just keep on spraying until you get it.

It's kind of like those folks who insist on going fishing with dynamite or hand grenades.

IMO, you don't need military weapons. The best shots I know of started out with and still use bolt action weapons. Many used single shot types, which made you take time to aim because your prey could be in the next county by the time you reloaded.

I know a guy who owns a .50 automatic. He's a collector. Each shot costs him $5.00 and he has a couple of cases of ammo. Big shells.

I also knew folks who bought these 'burglar traps', a cylinder with a cocking mechanism that chambered a shotgun shell. A clamp was welded to it. No trigger. Just a ring you attached a string to, pulled and cocked the thing. You fixed it out of sight to door frames or whatever, ran the string low through eye rings and waited. Anyone walking past who hit the string, got a load of buckshot at close range.

Some farmers who had these old houses full of antiques on their lands got tired of them being broken into by antique hunters and wired them up with these things. A few farmers went to jail when their traps crippled folks who thought the houses were abandoned.

Militants used them to booby trap trails to their bunkers. You could buy camouflaged wire and cord for them.

I own guns, but no military types.

I used to be a courier in another city. I'd arrive early, as manager, to open up the station. It wasn't unusual to find a spent shell or two in the parking lot. Sometimes I could find where they hit the cement walls. They were fired from at least a mile away.

In the same city I worked in a psychiatric institution on the outskirts of a high crime area. Every New Years Eve we had to keep the patients confined to the inner rooms, away from the windows because it sounded like a war out there at night. We could hear spent shells hitting the roof.

Unfortunately, the Right to bear arms means morons and psychopaths can get them also.

Here you go care troll, try to use your scroll wheel next time.

How were shells hitting the roof???

I don't know because I am not retarded.

Probably none. It doesn't seem like it lends itself to consistent use when moving. You still have to brace the butt against something reasonable rigid, otherwise the rifle has nothing to bounce in and out of. it would just move as a single piece unit.

Jeeze.....some of you people ( on both sides ) are liars. I'm a happy gun owner with a few of the guns that may be in trouble. As a gun owner that used to use public ranges, I have seen idiot owners that have scared the hell out of me and I have wished there was a test like a driving test before somebody could own a gun. I've had a barrel of a loaded gun swept over me three times in one day, until the RSO threw the guy out for being a danger. Every gun owner knows a retard that owns guns who shouldn't. Now for the other side, if you ban the so called "assault rifles" gun owners are going to get crafty or skilled in other firearms to where you will want those new guns banned. I took up shooting because I couldn't hit a golf ball 300 yards, now I can blow away said golf ball at 700 yards. The rifle I use for this is a very modified custom hunting rifle. You take away AR's and AK's and in six months some warped person will go University of Texas Tower somewhere and a new call to ban will start, cause if I can learn that skill anybody else can probably learn it better and faster than I did. T. Jefferson, G. Washington, J. Adams and the rest of the founding fathers had a hell of a time buying/making cannon and firearms to overthrow the British and were paranoid this new country may end up as broken as the one they rebelled against. Jefferson even called for a new revolution every 50 years or so. They knew what they were saying when they wrote the second. As far as I am concerned , if a govt soldier can have a Javelin, I should be able to also if I can afford it. This will never happen, but we need to find a way to blame those responsible for attacks like Sandy Hook instead of the innate object. If this means mental evaluations to get a firearm or hold people responsible for letting ill people get ahold of weapons, so be it. Just do not step on my rights to own firearms. Make people responsible for their actions . Of the 500 people killed in Chicago this last year, I assume more children died than at Sandy Hook. More murders occurred last year by knife than by rifle, why aren't we banning knifes ? I hear they are working on that next in England! Where would the slippery slope end ?

That's a very valid point.  He could have.  But there is also a good chance that he would have been unable to obtain the key or combo, been locked out and would have given up.

I mostly look at secure lockers and safes as a way to keep firearms away from your kids and from opportunistic thieves.  Somebody who is seriously dedicated at getting into them will probably find a way, but hopefully it will slow them down enough that you can detect the situation and react.

pedrop357: we've have this thing called the 4th amendment and similar provisions in various state constitutions designed to prohibit that kind of crap.

Except that search and seizure laws have generally been watered down over the years. And they could always do an end run by allowing some classes of firearms without a safe, but requiring it for others. At that point, they could argue that you are volunteering to allow them in since you could just buy an inspection-free .22 revolver instead.

Lastly, the Constitution can always change. People on both sides of the debate are irked over the vagueness of the Second Amendment.

drp: The phrase "well regulated" in that context doesn't mean "subject to administrative controls" - it means "competent".

That's completely untrue. In fact, Alexander Hamilton wrote an entire Federalist Paper on the nature of administrative control of the well-regulated militia:

The Federalist Papers No. 29
Concerning the Militia
From the Daily Advertiser
Thursday, January 10, 1788

Author: Alexander Hamilton

To the People of the State of New York:
THE power of regulating the militia, and of commanding its services in times of insurrection and invasion are natural incidents to the duties of superintending the common defense, and of watching over the internal peace of the Confederacy. It requires no skill in the science of war to discern that uniformity in the organization and discipline of the militia would be attended with the most beneficial effects, whenever they were called into service for the public defense. It would enable them to discharge the duties of the camp and of the field with mutual intelligence and concert an advantage of peculiar moment in the operations of an army; and it would fit them much sooner to acquire the degree of proficiency in military functions which would be essential to their usefulness. This desirable uniformity can only be accomplished by confiding the regulation of the militia to the direction of the national authority. It is, therefore, with the most evident propriety, that the plan of the convention proposes to empower the Union "to provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining the militia, and for governing such part of them as may be employed in the service of the United States, RESERVING TO THE STATES RESPECTIVELY THE APPOINTMENT OF THE OFFICERS, AND THE AUTHORITY OF TRAINING THE MILITIA ACCORDING TO THE DISCIPLINE PRESCRIBED BY CONGRESS." ....

I wish you all would move to the South with your guns and you could suck each others' small dicks all day long. In case you didn't notice, we won the election in November and we are on track to keep winning. Get ready for some changes.

Wow, you just completely gave up. That's sad.

That is not giving up, that is going all in and destroying your opponent. Notice you had ZERO rebuttal to any of my points.

Can't we just modify the Second Amendment a TINY bit? To where you're not allowed to own functioning crap that can kill a whole lot of people in 30 seconds? You can't hunt with it, you can't do meaningful target practice with it.
I mean, that's why we pay taxes for an Army, right? For the mass killing business.
(And if we ever have to shoot back against our Army, well, that battle's already lost.)

duffblue: Eatin' Queer Fetuses for Jesus: violentsalvation: Eatin' Queer Fetuses for Jesus: ThrobblefootSpectre: Eatin' Queer Fetuses for Jesus: I don't have a dog in this fight, but I gotta say this after reading these gun control threads: the pro-gun people are clearly less educated and less intelligent than the anti-gun people. Weird.

When you bring out penis insults it shows you really have nothing and that you know you've lost your pathetic argument. You're insecure about your penis and scared of guns, that's ok, we won't judge you.

I mean... Comparing your penis size really is a way to win this debate, it really shows you care about dead kids. You should be called to testify about penises in front of congress. Your contribution will be groundbreaking.

It would be more accurate if they stopped talking about the size of your penis and instead just focused on how much of a coward you are that you need a gun to defend yourself.

Your .45 ACP is no match for my hanzo steel!

I could disarm someone with a .45 APC using only my hands.

3 million vote difference in a nation of 325 million is not a mandate. Don't threaten to go all hitler like ( in a "I'm gonna shove this peace , love, happiness sh&t down your throat and your gonna like it ) or you will end up causing more hate .....

Eatin' Queer Fetuses for Jesus: How about I try again after Scalia and Thomas are both Breitbart'd within two weeks of each other during Obama's term? You guys are gonna shiat when that happens. Just wait.

So you're suggesting that I should be concerned about a possible shift in the high court due to an assassination of those justices during the current administration? You're a farking loon. Or a farking idiot. Or both.

pedrop357: log_jammin: so do we have any statics on the number of crimes committed with this modification?

Probably none. It doesn't seem like it lends itself to consistent use when moving. You still have to brace the butt against something reasonable rigid, otherwise the rifle has nothing to bounce in and out of. it would just move as a single piece unit.

Well you gun-nutters would know about bracing your butt against something rigid, I guess.

That is not true and is also completely irrelevant to the topic.

Ever watch one of those old Tom & Jerry cartoons where Tom and Jerry are so intent on battling each other that Butch the Dog can smack them in the head with a fireplace poker, leaving comic cat- and mouse-shaped dents, and Tom & Jerry are so single-minded in their battle that they don't realize they've suffered what would be a fatal head wound outside of Toontown?

That's exactly what Fark is when a couple of guys go at it in a tiresome flame war--I'm not mentioning names for now. I could waltz in, crack some corny Borscht-Belt jokes, detonate an atomic bomb, blogs.scientificamerican.com, or show a penis-shaped gun, and you squareheads here would keep up their endless penis-compensation accusations ad infinitum.

How is it not true???? Never mind, I quit. Never argue with idiots. They will only drag you down to their level. And here I was a moderate gun owner considering some sort of change and I just got pushed back into far right......nite nite....a$$holes

OK, you're death on M1911. What about my M1913? (No, not picatinny brackets to mount sights with the engraved Amendment I violations.)

My penis is fine, thanks for asking, I know you guys like to bring them up a lot, but I promise you, it is doing OK. Oh and I don't feel I need a gun to protect myself, they are all locked up (as you probably should be, before you fall down and hurt yourself). I carry one sometimes, but hardly ever. But I also live a half mile from signs like this:

and the last time I posted that I was told I was bring immigration into an anti-gun thread with a lame photoshop. And I'm not, I like immigrants, and here's the same sign from a .gov

Do you have an argument? Or do you just fancy my penis?

Nah I just fancy your penis. Why would someone think that was photoshopped?
