Boehner doing a good job. He makes more sense than Fartbongo.

We hate him so much, he just got re-elected and chosen as Speaker of the House, third in US presidential line of succession. I wish people hated me that much.

2013-01-08 02:58:28 PM
The people of his district vote Republican so often that all he has to worry about is a primary challenge.

The rest of the country dislikes him, just like they do every other congresscritter that isn't their congresscritter.

2013-01-08 02:59:32 PM
I saw the Daily Show episode on the web talking about this. I guess the only reason they made him Speaker again was that no Republican wanted the job.

He was re-elected by his peers.  This poll is about how the rest of us feel about him.

Being the GOP Speaker of the House this term will look a bit like being the CEO of BabyKillerCorp ("There was what in that bathwater?!") - even if you do your job well, there will be a legion of pissed-off people aching to punch you in the throat/genitals.

That wouldn't surprise me...the GOP is at a precarious place in its history, and I would bet not many of them want to be at the helm when the iceberg hits.

Yes, I misread this.  My bad.  But my point about being reaffirmed as Speaker still stands.

His peers were elected by some of the rest of us. Look at Congress' approval rating and then look at Congress' re-election rate. I'm just sayin, for as much as we supposedly hate it, we keep voting for it.

True.  And that's a weird phenomenon.

I don't know Boehner's district specifically, but I suppose a lot of these guys are getting re-elected by people who just don't have much of a clue about what's going on or what the issues really are.

I'll never forget the 60 Minutes interview wherein he said that he couldn't even go near a school without crying. I'd like to think it was from the guilt of years of working to destroy their tiny, hopeful futures. I wish I could tell you that, but the GOP is no fairy-tale world.

We aren't really, though. You can thank the Gerrymander for the fact that Boehner is back. In Ohio, Obama won 50.1% of the popular vote, but Republicans won 12 out of 16 (or 75%) of the House seats. I don't think that half of Obama's supporters voted for Republicans down-ticket. Same shiat happened in Pennsylvania and other places.

The reality is that people DID vote against the GOP-controlled house, and if we actually lived in a Democracy, that would have changed. Instead, we live in an Oligarchy where people who are already in power get to manipulate the elections, and thereby assure their own continued dominance.

Boehner actually seems like a relatively reasonable man. It's just that he's in charge of essentially getting tantrum-throwing teabaggers to become reasonable. ANYONE would have trouble getting the teabaggers to behave like adults.

Give the man a break, his legacy is that he presided over the worst Congress in decades, thanks in large part to the teabaggers. And it doesn't look like the 113th Congress will be as bad, it's gonna be worse.

/McConnell, on the other hand, is just as derpy as the 'baggiest of the teabaggers

Booze thread! Here, some things you might like if you get a chance to try them that I enjoy (or have enjoyed) semi-regularly:

Foothills Seeing Double IPA, sadly have not been able to get this since I left Winston-Salem. I mostly drink Dogfish Head 90 Minute and Ninkasi Total Domination these days.

Death's Door Gin. Makes a fine martini or g&t.

Del Maguey Santo Domingo Albarradas single-village mezcal. Nice straight, spicy flavor, not much burn.

But, hey, enjoy your moss.

Ohhh ok then, you don't hate strong flavors in general, just the peaty, iodine mossy flavor of Islays. If you can drink a 90 IBU beer for *FUN* then obviously it's a preference thing and not a palate limitation.

Also makes a fine g&t or martini: Hendricks. Infused with cucumber & rose petals. As for beers, almost anything from Quebec, especially the Trappist Dubbels, Tripels, & Imperial Stouts.

So long as you leave me the sake and the mead, I'm happy.

All nice beers. I haven't tried the Hendrick's but it's supposed to be good, so maybe that will be my next bottle of gin. I'd also recommend trying Linie Aquavit if you like strong-flavored drink; try a cold shot first and if the caraway doesn't send you running for the hills you'll enjoy it.
