Lizsavage: Flu shots bad. Hand Sanitizer overuse, worse. Anti bacterial everything = you gonna die fool.

Go outside. Touch dirty stuff. Expose yourself to germs, its called building immunity.

/rarely gets sick

Let's test this hypothesis, shall we?  1918 Flu epidemic.  Did they have hand sanitizers? Nope. Did they have anti-bacterial everything? Nope.  Did they have flu shots? Nope.  Did they get dirty and play outside and work in the dirt? Yup.

And they ended up getting the worst flu epidemic in the history of the US.

/Even if your hypothesis weren't utter idiocy, how well do you think it would work with the venerable in our society? The young, the old, and others with immune deficiencies?

From the comments: "Flu shots cause flu, mumphs shots cause mumphs, etc.. Exercise and eat right instead."

Apparently most of the people in that thread got their dumbass shots this fall...

mjohnson71: /Grandmother used to scare us with stories of the 1918 flu stuff

My Grandma did the same. She was 14 by then and my Great Grandfather quarantined everyone else in the family to the farm for over a year or something so that they wouldn't get sick (he ran the risk of going to town every so often). She remembered seeing the horse-drawn hearses rolling out of town. Scary stuff.

dognose4: Normally, I say yes, get a flu shot. It not only helps you, it also helps prevent the spread of the flu.

This year however, the main problem is that this year's flu outbreak is NOT vaccinated against in this year's flu vaccine! This is probably a good year to practice all the other safeguards. Eating right, washing hands, limiting contact, etc.

One report I saw had 3 out of every 4 cases had not been vaccinated. (still searching for that story).

According to here "most of the viruses - about 91% - that have been identified as circulating this season are the ones included in this year's flu vaccine." Link.

Now, the flu vaccine is one of our less effective ones in general, and that is a travesty, but we are working hard on getting a more robust and effective one, and compared to the full blown flu (7-10 or so days of misery with a chance of developing pneumonia as well, which is a fun dance, let me tell you!), the protection it does offer is worth the minor inconvenience of getting a shot

Disciple_of_Trogdor: Im a 27 year old fatguy. I've never gotten a flu shot in my life. When I was sick, I rode it out, usually only taking the occaisonal ny-quil to get some much needed sleep, drank plenty of fluids and soup, lived with being sick for a little while. The most potent shiat I've ever put in my system was some kind of anti-congestion stuff I got once because I felt like I was breathing water. Dont even remember what It was called, but it cleared it up right quick, though I was hacking shiat out for a week.

I got some flu-like symptoms a little before christmas. My immune system chewed up and spat that shiat out in about two days.

This is what happens when you fark your immune system with those anti-bacterial OCD dispensers that pop up all over the place by not letting it learn how to fight the nasty shiat.

If you were only sick for two days, you likely didn't have the flu. You had a cold.

Then again, I'm a healthy, male in his mid-twenties ... so I figure save the shots for the folks that needs/want 'em.

That's very noble, except that some viruses attack the young more strongly because of their stronger immune systems.

In a year where flu shots are limited, that's a good idea to go by.  In the years where there is plenty of shots to go around, you should still get one.  Even though you're young and healthy, it'll still reduce the chance of you getting the flu or even becoming a carrier of the flu. Doing this will help protect those in your community who may be venerable, such as babies, old folks, and those who are immune deficient or can't otherwise get the shot themselves.

Vaccines work best when the whole community works together.

Spanky McStupid: Marcintosh: GET A FLU SHOT - GET A FLU SHOT - GET A FLU SHOT -

Today is my first day fully coherent since before New Years Eve.  I don't drink.
Tamiflu is $15 a pill and you're sold 10 of 'em and psssst - it doesn't do that much.   I suspect fraud.
I haven't had the flu in a very long time 15 - 20 years.   I could not fend for myself this time.  I've lost 3 whole days somewhere in there.

Get a flu shot -  yes even now- go today - go now- leave work and get one.

Yeaaaah, maybe not. My cousin has had this since 12/27 and had a flu shot so I'll pass, thanks.

Your cousin probably got a different strain of the flu that what was in the shot.  It's very difficult to predict which strains will pop up, and we can't only vaccinate against the ones we know about.  That's the problem with a virus that changes so frequently.

That, and no shot is 100% effective.  It's the nature of the beast.  But it does decrease your chances of getting sick, and more importantly, is helps create a communal barrier to protect those who otherwise can't get the vaccine or are venerable in other ways.

So get the shot and protect yourself and your loved ones.

CapeFearCadaver: Nope. I'm horribly allergic to anything in the Mycins family, to which the flu shot has ~3 mycins/myxins. Become violently ill for days on end, it has put me in the hospital before.

You should still ask your doctor about the cell-based vaccines.  According to its manufacturers, flucelvax is made without antibiotics, menaing no mycins or myxins.  The prescribing information is here.
