Marcintosh: Tamiflu is $15 a pill and you're sold 10 of 'em and psssst - it doesn't do that much. I suspect fraud.

No fraud-- it just really doesn't do much. It does do a little. It is legitimately the closest thing to an "antibiotic" for viruses we have, but all it can do is shorten the duration of the flu by a day or so. And it IS expensive. And even worse, even though it barely does anything at all and is one of only a few weapons in that part of our arsenal, something like 99% of H1N1 strains were resistant to it by the end of 2009, up from 10% in 2007.

So, not fraud, but probably not worth your money at this point unless you're immunocompromised.

As you say, get the flu shot. It's cheaper and much more effective-- but you've got to do it in advance.

Once got placed in quarantine while sitting in the waiting room at the ER while my mom visited with my grandma, who was being seen at the time.
A local school was sending in a bunch of students who were exposed to something in the school's ventilation system (not entirely sure what), but a parent decided to bring in their kid before the hospital was able to set up the quarantine tent outside.
So everyone in the waiting room, including waiting patients, had to step outside to be examined along with the kids.

Marcintosh: GET A FLU SHOT - GET A FLU SHOT - GET A FLU SHOT -

Today is my first day fully coherent since before New Years Eve.  I don't drink.
Tamiflu is $15 a pill and you're sold 10 of 'em and psssst - it doesn't do that much.   I suspect fraud.
I haven't had the flu in a very long time 15 - 20 years.   I could not fend for myself this time.  I've lost 3 whole days somewhere in there.

Get a flu shot -  yes even now- go today - go now- leave work and get one.

I got the flu shot AND still got the damn flu. I'm on the tail end of it ( i hope). I have NEVER had the flu before and this one darn near kill me.. or at least I felt like I was close to death!

HotIgneous Intruder: HellRaisingHoosier: I've never gotten a flu shot.
Then again, I'm a healthy, male in his mid-twenties ... so I figure save the shots for the folks that needs/want 'em.

That's very noble, except that some viruses attack the young more strongly because of their stronger immune systems.

/Pandemic! Get your PANDEMIC here! PANDEMIC!

Was waiting for someone to mention this...

I believe this was the theory behind why the 1918 flu was so bad and why it seemed to target "young healthy" populations instead of the standard "very old, very young" populations.

Got the flu shot. My dad is sick, kiddo and I aren't. Hubby isn't either, but didn't have the flu shot, so not sure yet. Really hope he doesn't get this as he doesn't have sick days...

Be some pretty nice anecdotal evidence when all is said and done.

Modified wooden toilet roll holder

... but seriously, got a flu shot this year, first time I've had a reaction to it .. ended up with a wicked overnight fever and a sore arm for about a week. If the shot did that much then I would definitely not like the actual flu.

Nice.
I just got the On The Brink expansion. It adds a fifth player, more roles including a bio-terrorist that can play against the other players, and a new disease (label it Obamacare and you too can fight the good fight!) ;)

/I'm sorry, I've been catching up and there are too many healthcare threads
