It's been really bad in my neck of the woods. My company has decreed that if you have any slight symptom don't you dare come to the office to infect anyone else, and I've not gone out besides work. Friends have had it, or have kids in pre-school/kindergarten... fark that. I've got shiat to do.

Uhh, I don't have the pic anymore, but quarantine tents come out any time there's threat of pandemic.  My wife rode shotgun while I was on a call out to Legacy Emanuel Hospital during the H1N1 outbreak, and she took all kinds of pics of the "zombie holocaust" tents.

Every hospital had them.

When I was in the army, we did a fair amount of training that included using tents like those.  For those scenarios, we were mostly training for mass casualty situations in the event of a chemical or biological attack.

Egg allergy?  They're making flu vaccines that aren't made in eggs, but you'd probably have to ask your doctor to specifically source it; no clue whether the local Walgreen's/CVS/etc. clinic is that careful.

Avoid touching your face and gargle twice a day (last from a study of cold/flu transmisson among Japanese school children -- lower rates for among those who gargled 2x/day -- falls into the category of couldn't hurt/might help)

My household got this thing back in November. It is one of the most wicked illnesses I have ever had, way worse than West Nile. The hallucinations and complete time dilation are scary. We would have gone to the hospital but could not get ourselves together enough to make it outside. I was badly sick for over 2 weeks and really only started feeling normal around Christmas.

Let's test this hypothesis, shall we?  1918 Flu epidemic.  Did they have hand sanitizers? Nope. Did they have anti-bacterial everything? Nope.  Did they have flu shots? Nope.  Did they get dirty and play outside and work in the dirt? Yup.

And they ended up getting the worst flu epidemic in the history of the US.

/Even if your hypothesis weren't utter idiocy, how well do you think it would work with the venerable in our society? The young, the old, and others with immune deficiencies?

Came to say that.  If I were to speculate why it's not daily - I think it would be due to an information overload combined with for many states there's more than a 24 hour delay in reporting diseases to the state, then from there those numbers get rolled up to the CDC.  (At least Wisconsin is that way, and it's only hospitalizations within 72 hours, deaths within 24 hours)

The local hospital(s) in Northeast Wisconsin have said the flu vaccination is a good match to the two strains (the A and B).
I got my flu shot and was achy for a day or two but that was it.  (Really thankful I got it, several coworkers were out for days)
Just remember: the flu shot doesn't necessary mean you wont get the flu, but it many cases it does lessen the severity of it.  And it separates you from Jenny McCarthy.

Your cousin probably got a different strain of the flu that what was in the shot.  It's very difficult to predict which strains will pop up, and we can't only vaccinate against the ones we know about.  That's the problem with a virus that changes so frequently.

That, and no shot is 100% effective.  It's the nature of the beast.  But it does decrease your chances of getting sick, and more importantly, is helps create a communal barrier to protect those who otherwise can't get the vaccine or are venerable in other ways.

So get the shot and protect yourself and your loved ones.

Im a 27 year old fatguy. I've never gotten a flu shot in my life. When I was sick, I rode it out, usually only taking the occaisonal ny-quil to get some much needed sleep, drank plenty of fluids and soup, lived with being sick for a little while. The most potent shiat I've ever put in my system was some kind of anti-congestion stuff I got once because I felt like I was breathing water. Dont even remember what It was called, but it cleared it up right quick, though I was hacking shiat out for a week.

I got some flu-like symptoms a little before christmas. My immune system chewed up and spat that shiat out in about two days.

This is what happens when you fark your immune system with those anti-bacterial OCD dispensers that pop up all over the place by not letting it learn how to fight the nasty shiat.

In a year where flu shots are limited, that's a good idea to go by.  In the years where there is plenty of shots to go around, you should still get one.  Even though you're young and healthy, it'll still reduce the chance of you getting the flu or even becoming a carrier of the flu. Doing this will help protect those in your community who may be venerable, such as babies, old folks, and those who are immune deficient or can't otherwise get the shot themselves.

Vaccines work best when the whole community works together.

The shingles shot is useless. It cures symptoms, not diseases. You've had shingles since childhood. Big Pharma is selling snake oil, too. Shingles come out from stress, like the herpes virus, which also can't be cured. You'll get that shot every year and it won't do a thing for you, because if it's gonna show, it'll show up, just like the herpe. I think one instigates the other. A chill pill will do more for ya.

I'm allergic to flu shots. It sucks. So I just wash my hands OCD style, take tons of echinacea and vitamins during the season and stay away from things like kids with gooey hands.

Avoid touching your face and gargle twice a day (last from a study of cold/flu transmisson among Japanese school children -- lower rates for among those who gargled 2x/day -- falls into the category of couldn't hurt/might help)

Probably shouldn't gargle with strep culture medium, though :)

Disciple_of_Trogdor: Im a 27 year old fatguy.

If you were only sick for two days, you likely didn't have the flu. You had a cold.

Normally, I say yes, get a flu shot. It not only helps you, it also helps prevent the spread of the flu.

This year however, the main problem is that this year's flu outbreak is NOT vaccinated against in this year's flu vaccine! This is probably a good year to practice all the other safeguards. Eating right, washing hands, limiting contact, etc.

One report I saw had 3 out of every 4 cases had not been vaccinated. (still searching for that story).

According to here "most of the viruses - about 91% - that have been identified as circulating this season are the ones included in this year's flu vaccine." Link.

Now, the flu vaccine is one of our less effective ones in general, and that is a travesty, but we are working hard on getting a more robust and effective one, and compared to the full blown flu (7-10 or so days of misery with a chance of developing pneumonia as well, which is a fun dance, let me tell you!), the protection it does offer is worth the minor inconvenience of getting a shot

2013-01-08 05:07:01 PM
I got the flu shot when my university offered it for free through their pharmacy program.  I have gotten the shot every year since just before I became asthmatic.  I'll still be careful about what I touch and will wash my hands and use hand sanitizer frequently (though not the stuff with antibacterial nonsense in it - it makes my hands break out and swell).  I haven't had the flu in 4 years and I hope to keep that streak alive.  That was enough to convince me to get the shot - feeling like death for a week (the last week of classes, to boot) and my boyfriend and roommate both not catching it from me, even though they were both in close contact with me, but had both gotten the flu shot.

Well, considering that only 1/3 of the population gets vaccinated, it's no surprise that most people who are sick would not be vaccinated. You'd hope it's all of them. If 1/4 of the flu patients were vaccinated, that works out to what, a less than 50% success rate with the vaccine?

My Grandma did the same. I think in general (and according to the following link, wish I had access to the actual studies) the flu vaccine is only 60% effective. It's really not that great of one, but it's what we have at the moment. I'm inclined to think part of the push back on vaccines is due to the low efficacy of the flu vaccine.

Which is why they are really, really trying to develop a better one.

Maybe.  But the bottom line is that hand sanitizer is, at the very least, better than nothing for sanitizing hands and preventing the spread of communicable disease.  And the people saying "expose yourself to pathogens" are really guilty of grossly over-simplifying a rather complicated public health theory.

Marcintosh: Tamiflu is $15 a pill and you're sold 10 of 'em and psssst - it doesn't do that much. I suspect fraud.

No fraud-- it just really doesn't do much. It does do a little. It is legitimately the closest thing to an "antibiotic" for viruses we have, but all it can do is shorten the duration of the flu by a day or so. And it IS expensive. And even worse, even though it barely does anything at all and is one of only a few weapons in that part of our arsenal, something like 99% of H1N1 strains were resistant to it by the end of 2009, up from 10% in 2007.

So, not fraud, but probably not worth your money at this point unless you're immunocompromised.

As you say, get the flu shot. It's cheaper and much more effective-- but you've got to do it in advance.

Once got placed in quarantine while sitting in the waiting room at the ER while my mom visited with my grandma, who was being seen at the time.
A local school was sending in a bunch of students who were exposed to something in the school's ventilation system (not entirely sure what), but a parent decided to bring in their kid before the hospital was able to set up the quarantine tent outside.
So everyone in the waiting room, including waiting patients, had to step outside to be examined along with the kids.

I believe this was the theory behind why the 1918 flu was so bad and why it seemed to target "young healthy" populations instead of the standard "very old, very young" populations.

Got the flu shot. My dad is sick, kiddo and I aren't. Hubby isn't either, but didn't have the flu shot, so not sure yet. Really hope he doesn't get this as he doesn't have sick days...
