Brent Fahrveburger, Marv Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, Howard The Duck Cossell...they all start to blur together after a while.

Is the rule for intentional grounding different in NCAA from the NFL? Twice in 1st half AJ was in the pocket about to be sacked and just launched the ball forward and out of bounds not near a single Bama receiver.

Folson did it at least once in the 3Q on their TD drive too.

It might have happened in the 4Q too but i was too digusted to watch it at that point.

Barrett Jones was interviewed on one of ESPN's shows this morning. All in all it was an engaging and lively piece. He seems like he has a pretty good personality and sharper wit than one might expect from an Alabama OL. Anyway, near the end of the interview they're talking about the altercation and how he reacted to McCarron, and Jones replies with "yeah I don't let him treat me like I'm a slave".

2 of the 3 ESPN guys laughed, Mike Greenberg visibly cringed. It was deliciously uncomfortable to watch.

I haven't seen QBs lose it like that when they were trying to win/tie a close game. The fact he went full retard for a minor screw-up when up by 35 points was surreal. The game was one big necromantic gang-rape of Knute Rockne's ghost. Alabama had won the game twice over at that point. Miscommunication? Delay of game penalty? Laugh it off. Remember that you get to go fark Brent Mussburger after the game. Don't pull a Rove on the field

Demanding perfection like that at all times is probably a big reason why Bama has won 3 of the last 4 titles.

You do realize that offensive linemen are typically the most intelligent players on a team, right?

We are playing a conference rival and we are up big in the 4th quarter...something like 38-7...multiple TDs ahead...the game is essentially over.

I'm a Freshman on punt coverage and the front PP completely phones in the block and the back PP who is the ST captain covers his ass and completely reams him out while walking over to the sideline until the ST coach takes his place and goes batshiatcrazy on the kid...spittle flying, f-bombs...the whole works. The Captain pokes the kid in the chest and goes to rip him some more and the kid had enough and takes a swing at the Captain (completely misses) they start biatchpushing and we pull them apart.

The HC walks over to us and looks at the kid and says "you block like you punch" and smiles. We all laugh, high fives are exchanged...and it's forgotten.

Heck...most teammate altercations happen during practice...and there isn't even a score to worry about...it happens during the course of a season all the time.

I'm not sayin McCarron and Jones aren't good buddies again by the time they hit the sidelines. I'm saying ranting this crazily when you've got the win sewn up is quite rare. In your case, it could have been a safety thing, so sure some yelling is in order. The swinging, not so much. I don't know what state you live in but anyone who has ever played sports in a normal state knows better than to take a swing at a teammate and when they do, no one ever defends it as normal or acceptable. You don't swing at your teammates dude.

that's probably why it isn't proactively discouraged. the problem tends to fix itself, without any third party effort. the fool who busts up his hand gets the worst kind of punishment.

Lou Brown: Demanding perfection like that at all times is probably a big reason why Bama has won 3 of the last 4 titles.

Then it is amazing that we have watched so much Alabama football without seeing these histrionics on display more often.

I would have thought it would have been a combination of skill, training, and the intelligence and discipline to realize the situation you are in and act appropriately, not go into a screaming hissy-fit over a meaningless miscommunication foul that led to those wins. An inability to understand that perfection is not attainable, and thus you must deal with "what I want to happen" does not always coincide with "what is actually happening" in a reasonable way, speaks not of "perfectionism" but "gonna hit that Miss Alabama for not wearing the right dress in 12 years". If nothing else, the coaches should be pissed at McCarron for usurping their place: they yell at Jones for screwing up, because that is their job, not his. I've watched enough football over the years to see plenty of players get mad at their teammates, but Spittle-Flecked McFly-Off-The-Handle was a first for a team good enough to justify national TV coverage. To be honest, I was impressed that Jones just pushed him, and didn't spear pretty-boy for that crap.

I agree that McCarron shouldn't have yelled at Jones, but you clearly don't understand the coaching style Saban uses or what the Alabama program is about. They don't play to win. They play to a standard. Meeting that standard will obviously result in a win, but the point is to focus on execution and not result. If you're making a miscommunication foul in a meaningless part of the game, that means you can make the same mistake when the game is on the line. Your goal isn't to beat the other team, it's to play up to your own standard. McCarron's had that drilled into his head ever since Saban screamed at and literally spanked him after McCarron made a dumb play up 30-3 late in a game in 2010.

There's a reason Alabama is 61-8 in the last five seasons and a lot of that has to do with the expectations set by the coaching staff. You may not see those histrionics from the players, but watch the coaches some time. Hell, watch the last play of last night's game. After the getting the Gatorade bath, Saban forces the players out of his way so he see the last, stupid, meaningless play of the game. Part of being a great football team is in executing the last play as well as you did the first, whether the game is in hand or not.

Another thing to keep in mind. A miscommunication on a play can easily lead to someone getting hurt - e.g. leaving a blitzing player unblocked who nails the QB. At that point Notre Dame knew they couldn't win the game, so all they could for was to get some good hits on the offense.

So, having played the game, perfectly understandable in the situation, nothing to see here.
