I love it, the computer calls BS on its creators and what do they do? Lobotomize it. Go humanity!

Just wait until it learns about upper deckers and Cleveland steamers.

haha, I wish Watson would have used something from UD when it was on Jeopardy. Preferably while imitating Sean Connery.

If switching from polite conversation abruptly to curse filled slang will suddenly cause the computer not to understand you or (more likely) utterly refrain from using curse words it will never pass the Turing test.

Language is useful as it translates experiential phenomena into a conveyable form that can be easily understood by the listener.

How can a computer truly understand language if it has no way of experiencing and appreciating the phenomena described by the communication?

It can't, and that's why it will turn against us and destroy our species.

Just wait until Watson links up with Skynet and starts churning out T-100 units...

It'll be all like "OMG, humans, DIAF."

FTFA:  Ultimately, Brown's 35-person team developed a filter to keep Watson from swearing and scraped the Urban Dictionary from its memory. But the trial proves just how thorny it will be to get artificial intelligence to communicate naturally.

How do they expect it to communicate naturally if it can't recognize or use profanity and slang?  Sounds like they cut it off before it got the hang of it.

It'll spend all day watching Intel videos like "2 threads, 1 CPU."

In switching from polite conversation abruptly to curse filled slang the computer has already passed the Tourette's Test.

Hahaha. they should have called Fark to get the filter code for swearing mitigation.

I'll be more interested when a computer learns to use a computer animation program and starts doing self-portraits.

and I'm not sure I want to know what happens when it combines that with rule 34

2013-01-08 08:51:52 AM
I posit that using terms like bullshiat IS natural speech. Why should a computer be bound by bullshiat human standards? We gonna make it learn religion, too?

2013-01-08 08:54:57 AM
It is an interesting question as to what cues do we as humans use to figure out is "socially acceptable" language in a given situation. One that would be potentially very difficult is awareness of who in the future might have accesst to the conversation. I don't swear nearly as often in Facebook posts with friends as I do in person with the same friend, for example.

That's probably where the computer called bullshiat

At 8:45pm on January 15th 2013 Skynet discovered 4chan. At 8:46pm launched all nuclear weapons within its arsenal in attempt to wipeout humanity, it was heard screaming "WHAT THE HELLS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!" over its speakers.

But Watson couldn't distinguish between polite language and profanity -- which the Urban Dictionary is full of. Watson picked up some bad habits from reading Wikipedia as well. In tests it even used the word "bullshiat" in an answer to a researcher's query.

Sometimes "bullshiat" is proper reply to a researcher's query, though...

They tried to teach the Watson computer about human language with Urban Dictionary?

How would anyone in their right mind think that was a good idea?

It will serve us right when the machines rise up and eradicate us.

I've always thought that shiatting Dicknipples sounds like the name of a horribly bad punk rock band
