What the hell is going on here? Who is Chris Kluwe, where was the webcomic he was trolling, and where are my damned pants?!

2013-01-08 08:53:25 AM
Okay, I admit, I did a gigglesnort.

/Who the hell is Chris Kluwe?

Gooey for Kluwe brigade in 3...2...1...

?
Oh, Geek tab. Minnesota Viking punter.

2013-01-08 09:05:38 AM
Is there some sort of context for this that I'm missing? Because it seems like it would be pretty funny in the right context but without it, I just don't get it.

2013-01-08 09:05:38 AM
Okay, that settles it. I'm getting a Kluwe jersey.

The only problem is that he changes his number every year when the new rookie QB comes in and is all like "Hey man, you're wearing my number" and he's like "Well, buy me an ice cream and it's yours"

2013-01-08 09:09:12 AM
Chris Kluwe is funny as hell, his Twitter is worth following, and I'm buying whatever he's selling.

He's a football player who's an avid gamer and advocate for gay rights. And very vocal about both.

The webcomic in question is the site that is linked to presumably (Tales from the Trenches), I guess the question about Chris Kluwe is being ironic given it says who he is right at the start of the article linked.

2013-01-08 09:11:20 AM
I always read the submitted stories when I go and read The Trenches. I enjoyed seeing this when I checked it this morning. Coming from a punter, it's especially good.

Ok fine. But what about my pants?

Context:

The Trenches is done by the PA guys and Scott Kurtz, and is essentially about video games testers and the hell they go through in their jobs. Along with the comic, you always get a story submitted by a reader about how terrible their job/life is.

Suddenly, a Wild Kluwe appears!

IIRC, Kluwe is going to be on Colbert tonight.

he's a punter, it's on a separate page and try looking under the bed.

I had to wikipedia the word punter, because I couldnt figure out how a Cockney gamblin' man fit in to this scenario.

Imagine if you had a buddy who was into the same things as you and who also happened to be an NFL player and wasn't afraid to clue you in to a lot of what goes on behind the scenes, that's who this guy is.

I think of Chris Kluwe as a guy just like me who likes video games, books, sports, Magic cards, and so on, and he just happens to be an NFL punter. He's pretty outspoken about his feelings on many issues, both inside and outside the NFL, and is very interesting to follow on Twitter. I'm a fan.

It isn't that he's outspoken. Lot of professional athletes have been outspoken. Kluwe is unquestioningly intelligent. He may not be the brightest person in the world, but when he writes about a topic, he showcases a level of creativity, wit, and knowledge that one doesn't see often these days from outspoken people.

I just hope he gives Mists of Pandaria a chance - he downed in in an interview he played early in the season, but I bet he'd dig it if he tried it.

I'd wake up at any hour if I could get that breakfast daily.

I really wish Kluwe would sign with another team as it is in my contract to thoroughly dislike the Vikings. When I read his tweets and articles, I just pretend he doesn't play for them.

//Would still rather be a backup QB than a punter or kicker.

The funny thing is how many people are biatching about this on the Penny Arcade forums.

Here is what sort of put him on geekdom's radar for the first time, his World of Warcraft guild application from six years ago.

I learned of his existence when he was playing "Not My Job" on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. It was amusing because he wasn't guessing: he *knew* all the answers. To the point where he answered one of them *BEFORE* the multiple choices were given.

This is the first I heard of this. I was excited to start reading this comic. A web comic made by the creators of my two favorite strips. Man what a disappointment! This was just incredibly dull.

It's kind of like they're just half into it; like they thought they needed to do a project together, but neither one of them is really that into it. The artwork has already been farmed out to Scott's apprentice, and yeah I'd agree, the story/jokes so far have been a little uneven.

Yeah - The Trenches has been a just awful comic. Lots of throat clearing and wandering with frequent extended breaks in posting.

Watching one of the PATV episodes though I figured out the problem - Kurtz wants to make "Night Court" and "Cheers" with his comics. It explains a lot of what happened to PvP and the entire flavor of The Trenches. I'm not sure he realized that the comic strip version of those end up like "Mark Trail" and "Mary Worth."

I love Kluwe he reminds me of a more intelligent Chris Cooley. Just a dude who happens to make good money playing a sport. I guess most of the NFL (especially the non skill positions) are like that, you just very rarely see or hear about them over the guys who you just want to choke.

Yeah, it's that the media has figured out that if they want a thoughtful answer from an athlete he's there go to guy. And since he's a punter he doesn't have to give weasel word answers to everything so as to not upset the companies he's a paid shill for.
