You know what's good? "Breaking Dawn." It's the best thing I've seen since "Barb Wire."

My dad is a huge fan of The Wire. So I got him Breaking Bad for Christmas.

Breaking Bad is awful. The Wire, however, is a strong contender for the best television drama. I don't see a relationship between the two things at all.

My girlfriend is watching Breaking Bad for the first time. She's almost at that scene with the face. Well, most of a face...

What got me about that scene was the whole "best thing on TV, except maybe The Wire" thing.

I've told a few Breaking Bad fans that I got into it just this last autumn, and every frkn one of them said "you should watch The Wire ..." (which I haven't watched) "... if you like Breaking Bad, you'll love The Wire."

Breaking bad is better than the Wire....there I said it.

(Haven't watched much of the last season of Breaking Bad because I got bored)

I watched the whole first season of The Wire. By the end, I still couldn't name half the cast. I can appreciate dense narrative, as long as I'm not being thrown in the deep end. I mean, seriously, the first scene is two guys talking and they throw out a dozen names like I'm supposed to know all of those people...

Every time I see that, I'm left wondering what in the hell a tort (?) song is. So...what the hell is a tort song? Anybody?

This is my fault. I think Breaking Bad and the Wire are two of best dramas ever and I've turned numerous (possibly dozens) on to both shows. You are all welcome.

My wife and I went through the same thing. We hung in there to the bitter end, and we didn't really get hooked until around midway through season 3. On a second viewing I'm sure I'll like it a whole lot more.

But yeah, The Wire is not a show that makes it easy to like on a first viewing.

Didn't watch it, so this might not be relevant, but the Wikipedias have this to say: "A torch song is a sentimental love song, typically one in which the singer laments an unrequited or lost love, either where one party is oblivious to the existence of the other, where one party has moved on, or where a romantic affair has affected the relationship.[1][2] The term comes from the saying, "to carry a torch for someone", or to keep aflame the light of an unrequited love."

A torch song is a usually a slow, emotional ballad about the singer's lost love (i.e. the guy/girl that the singer is "still holding a torch for"). The term typically connotes a cabaret-type singer -- a woman in an evening gown singing along to only piano accompaniment in a smoky bar -- rather than a Taylor Swift-type superstar (even though Swift's songs have some torchy aspects to them). Sinatra's "In the Wee Small Hours" album can be said to be lots of torch songs.

Oops -- didn't see Lokasenna's explanation. But here's another good discussion.

And to put it simply, torch songs are the 1940s and '50s equivalent of emo music.

I had to watch the Wire with subtitles the whole time, there was so much slang and so many character names I was having trouble keeping it all straight.  But once I got past that, it was very rewarding.  David Simon says each season is like a novel, and that's a good way to look at it.  Great acting and storytelling.  Often extremely bleak, and my early complaint was that it lacked some humor, and then we stumbled onto the Chicken McNuggets discussion and couldn't stop laughing.

We turned a friend onto it, and likewise he insisted we watch Breaking Bad.  We didn't think it could be as rewarding and were skeptical, but we gave it a chance and ultimately it was.  Great shows, both.

Vince Gilligan was asked the following question, and I've heard Ben Affleck say essentially the same thing while promoting "Argo":

Do you know why TV is having such a golden age?
You could do a whole piece about that. I think the answer is multi-fold, but back in the Seventies, when Hollywood was a source of storytelling for adults, you could have movies like Five Easy Pieces that would never in a million years get made by a major studio. You could no more get that made now than you could send a rocket to Jupiter tomorrow. That kind of storytelling was abandoned by Hollywood, because Hollywood's economic model is just different now. It's a model in which only big tentpole sequels and cartoon movies get made, and yet there's a huge appetite for stories about adults. And, because that appetite exists and it keeps going unslaked - if that's the right way to put it - by Hollywood, it had to migrate elsewhere and it migrated to television.

Ah ha! Thanks, that makes WAY more sense. It's one of those things...I heard it wrong the first time, and no matter how many times I replayed it I couldn't hear anything else, nevermind that it made no sense.
