meat0918: Is it that they don't think rape happens elsewhere?

It gives them the opportunity to pretend that rape doesn't happen in their own home countries and therefore makes them feel justified in railing against "savage" cultures.

I like your Saraswati. I do not like your Saraswati devotees. Your Saraswati devotees are so unlike your Saraswati.

Religion is bad, mmm-kay?

Let's make blanket statements about everyone and see how wrong we are. I guess it's easier to be ignorant than to try to understand another culture.

You're right. If only gang rape is considered in the appropriate socio-religious context, it's no big deal.

because it's exciting to see change in action? because we still need to improve how we respond to rape and treat the victims and offenders? because we shouldn't have to teach our girls how to 'stay safe' but instead teach the boys how to behave properly? or maybe it's because so many politicians have ...very interesting ideas on what rape even is? i think showing how another part of the world is reacting in disgust and protest is great and might just maybe give certain people over here something to mull over.

i'm really curious why you asked this question. please tell me it's not because you're one of those 'it didn't happen in my town and i don't see how it affects me directly so i don't care' types?

Also, aside from the sickening horror of what was done to this woman (and her companion), my mind was farking blown by the fact that nearly 90% of all reported violent crime in India is committed against women.

See above.

I've been more or less unplugged from the net and news for 2 weeks, and it just seemed odd to me that this was a national news story.

And I agree, we need to teach boys to behave, not women to cover up.

worlddan: This is the best way...a woman should exercise control over her body by in all cases giving a man what he wants, when he wants it. This is the only way to end the war between the sexes, to bring peace and well-being to this earth. Let the lion lie down with the lamb in the lion's stomach, digesting. The woman should do what the man wants. Then there is no rape; then we are all one.

Your words are like the sweet songs of birds. Come to me now, and let us celebrate peace and understanding between the sexes. Just let me put my birth control in first, so that we do not cheapen our love with the tyranny of childbirth.

In a way, I kind of like this guy.

I made a "Bollywood" joke post about this a week ago, before I read what really happened, and I still feel like a P.O.S.
This guy probably believes what he said and feels truly righteous.

At least he made me feel a little better about myself knowing that I'm not the most horrible person on the planet anymore.

Nope, I already made my mea culpa elsewhere. My question was one from profound ignorance of what the hell was going on that could have been remedied by actually reading about the back story before posting a comment on this asshole.

Newsflash:  violence against women IS a political subject!

And just like any  good politician, this guy has a PR aide (female, no less) telling the press that his remarks were taken out of context and digging his grave even deeper (or derper).

"An aide to Asaram sought to downplay the controversy over the remarks. Neelam Dubey said the remarks were made at a religious discourse in Delhi in the context of how one should invoke God's name to avoid incidents like crimes against women. Some reports said the event was held in Rajasthan.

"Dubey said Asaram was trying ta drive home the point that incidents like the gangrape of the girl could have been avoided by reciting mantras, by reciting names of Gods. "If she(victim) would have taken God's name or recited a mantra God inside her might have suggested her to how to avoid such crimes," she said, seeking to explain Asaram's remarks.

"He was giving that idea to his devotees. He was citing the gangrape incident to say one should use commonsense to avoid such incidents," she added.

Oh, and he's blaming the media, too.  Damn, where was this guy when we needed a challenger for Boehner?

On the controversy over his remark on the Delhi gangrape victim, the guru said, "I only meant that had even one of the six accused taken 'diksha' (initiated into his teachings), the crime would not have occurred."

He blamed the television channels "who get funding from abroad" for creating controversy over his remarks.

"I am amused and I also pity them," Asaram said.

And its about freaking time too. The status of women in India is ghastly and religion is used there (as here and in the middle-east) as an excuse.

FWIW this guy is not a troll. Hes completely sincere and believes everything he says. Im glad he opened his fool mouth though. Time to get these absurd and deeply harmful beliefs out in the open where they can be properly ridiculed.

Chawla alleged that Sai, clad in a black outfit, used to perform these macabre rituals over corpses with a human skull kept over them. Chawla parted ways with Sai and settled in Thane in 2005."

I have a friend that has told me that the greatest thing he did for the environment and hence to prevent global warming was to not have kids.  I would bet that guy is saying something along the same lines; that having 6 kids is counter to his pro-rain-forest goals.

//Is it wrong of me to hope that the Guru Asaram Bapu gets raped by an elephant?

An elephant penis can't rape by itself. He'd be complicit.

I was hoping for a rabid badger to crawl into his ass, but that works, too.

Do they have badgers in India?

I said badgers twice.

Let's hope they have honey badgers. Honey badger don't give a fark. A honey badger can go right up his anus and chew his intestines all to hell. Ewww, that's nasty! Honey badger, he's nasty...
