This, my dears, is the face of religion.  I'm not talking about half-assed, go-to-church-as-a-social-event, "Wellll, it may be what the Holy Book says but that's not really what it means" religion, I mean actual, practice-what-you-espouse religion.

Religion is bad, mmm-kay?

Addressing his followers, Asaram said that when the girl encountered the six drunk men she should have taken God's name and could have held the hand of one of the men and said "I consider you as my brother"

Tell you what: When the Rape Van pulls up to your house you can give that line a spin and see how it goes. In the mean time shut your effin hole.

She should have held the men's hands and called them her religious brothers... except how would she even know if they were the same religion as her? (The guru assumes they're all Hindu but those guys could have been Vodun practitioners or Zoroastrians for all she knew...)

The guru is right; I can't find any fault with his logic. If a woman wants sex then it is not rape. That's the real underlying problem here....who are these women who dare to refuse sex to men; they should be ashamed of themselves. Sex leads to procreation and procreation leads to more followers and more followers lead to bigger bank accounts for the guru. I call that doing it right.

Yes, when a man wants sex every woman should reach out and grab his hand and call him brother. Amen to that. Why should anyone be ashamed of incest? There are no sexual absolutes in this world; it's all relative. And let her not stop with her brother either, she should reach out her hand and call him father. Then the guru will come and join them in a holy trinity...father...brother...and sister. For is not the trinity a threesome?

This is the best way...a woman should exercise control over her body by in all cases giving a man what he wants, when he wants it. This is the only way to end the war between the sexes, to bring peace and well-being to this earth. Let the lion lie down with the lamb in the lion's stomach, digesting. The woman should do what the man wants. Then there is no rape; then we are all one.

because it's exciting to see change in action? because we still need to improve how we respond to rape and treat the victims and offenders? because we shouldn't have to teach our girls how to 'stay safe' but instead teach the boys how to behave properly? or maybe it's because so many politicians have ...very interesting ideas on what rape even is? i think showing how another part of the world is reacting in disgust and protest is great and might just maybe give certain people over here something to mull over.

Newsflash:  violence against women IS a political subject!

And just like any  good politician, this guy has a PR aide (female, no less) telling the press that his remarks were taken out of context and digging his grave even deeper (or derper).

"An aide to Asaram sought to downplay the controversy over the remarks. Neelam Dubey said the remarks were made at a religious discourse in Delhi in the context of how one should invoke God's name to avoid incidents like crimes against women. Some reports said the event was held in Rajasthan.

"Dubey said Asaram was trying ta drive home the point that incidents like the gangrape of the girl could have been avoided by reciting mantras, by reciting names of Gods. "If she(victim) would have taken God's name or recited a mantra God inside her might have suggested her to how to avoid such crimes," she said, seeking to explain Asaram's remarks.

"He was giving that idea to his devotees. He was citing the gangrape incident to say one should use commonsense to avoid such incidents," she added.

On the controversy over his remark on the Delhi gangrape victim, the guru said, "I only meant that had even one of the six accused taken 'diksha' (initiated into his teachings), the crime would not have occurred."

He blamed the television channels "who get funding from abroad" for creating controversy over his remarks.

"I am amused and I also pity them," Asaram said.

And its about freaking time too. The status of women in India is ghastly and religion is used there (as here and in the middle-east) as an excuse.

FWIW this guy is not a troll. Hes completely sincere and believes everything he says. Im glad he opened his fool mouth though. Time to get these absurd and deeply harmful beliefs out in the open where they can be properly ridiculed.

One average american child uses the same world resources as a thousand or two poor african or bengalideshian children so having six is about the same as birthing twelve thousand or so.
Considering that they are raised rich it's likely the equivalent two hundred and sixty four thousand or so.

A dramatic reduction in human population is the greatest thing we could do for the environment by far.
Take it down to twenty million with maybe six or twelve fertile females world wide and we're good to go.

At least Sting's kids will be educated and thoughtful, so there's that.

I've had an issue with some aspects of eastern religions since I saw my little cousin in tears telling me the thing that bothered her most about being severely abused was that she'd heard about karma and thought she must have been really evil in another life.

A few months ago I wrote a post on a Tantric message board as a response to one of the "teaching" articles on the site which stated that there was no such thing as evil, and you could essentially love your way out of anything that appeared to be frightening or evil. I would have emailed the author, but that wasn't possible, so my response had to go on their forum instead.

Basically I felt very strongly that for some people reading that lie would endanger their life, or prolong their being in a truly dangerous situation and encourage their sense of guilt. I gave various examples, and serial rapists were one of them. I showed it to a friend and they said I did the right thing and that in their opinion that post might save someone's life.

I assumed that the problem was that the website had been written by one of these dumb neo-hippy white western types, who has always lived a safe existence and can afford the luxury of thinking you can just love all the nasty things away. Now, sadly, I know I was wrong.

Yeah, that's very similar too, and as stupid as, the christian teaching of "turn the other cheek". Uh, be a professional victim? I don't think so. If someone wrongs you, it's your moral duty, if possible, to make sure they don't go on to wrong other people. The way you go about doing that depends on the particular circumstances at the time.

Fortunately most western christians don't subscribe to the turn the other cheek concept in the first place.
