"The next Defense Secretary will face a number of challenges on day one, so we need the right person for the job," said Wicker. "I am strongly opposed to the President's nomination of Sen. Hagel. It would be divisive and distracting for Congress, the Administration, and the American people.

"Sen. Hagel's record of opposing Iran sanctions is troubling. His views and positions on the Middle East and Israel are contrary to the Administration's own stated policies, and there are concerns from members of both parties about this nomination.

"The President is choosing a fight rather than nominating a consensus pick. With sequestration's defense cuts averted for only two months, this will take attention away from very pressing problems. Sec. Panetta was approved unanimously by the Senate. The President would be wise to nominate someone else for this critical position."

Keep in mind a Republican Senator from Mississippi said this.

You know, I'm pretty pissed about this nomination as well, because I think he should have picked a Democrat for PURELY POLITICAL reasons, because choosing a Republican Secretary of Defense enforces the whole "Democrats are pussies" nonsense, and I think it's absurd that Obama still wants to work with these knuckle dragging troglodytes. She's not gonna hold that football, Charlie Brown.

However, I am GREATLY enjoying watching the GOP did themselves into a hole on this one.

There are major forces at work against Hagel.  First they tried the antisemitism angle and now someone is funneling money into Log Cabin to try the bizarre anti-gay angle.  Both charges are ridiculous--it's all about his history opposing the wars.  Maybe there are some Bush Doctrine neo-cons scared shiatless behind the scenes. Maybe there are some defense contractors scared he'll finally get serious on the DoD budget.  Who knows.

Ok, but Jim Webb needs a job now too.

Today I learned that Hagel cosponsored the post 9-11 GI Bill. Also, dogs do not lay eggs.

I should just return them, then.  Maybe I'll get those magic beans the guy was selling.

It's been a joke for most of his first term but I really think there is a chance at least one Republican would disagree with Obama if he gave a speech and proclaimed himself pro breathing

The Emergency Committee for Israel, co-founded by Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol, is campaigning strongly against the Hagel choice and has disclosed that it is buying advertising to build support for the  effort.

I am thoroughly interested in hearing how Hagel was derelict of duty during Vietnam and somehow let an entire platoon of soldiers get killed because he was smoking a joint... or something.

Panetta is a Democrat.

He chose Hagel not because he's some sort of aggressive he-man. He chose him because they will be proposing major cuts to defense spending, and it's better politically if they come from a Republican. (Republicans in Congress will still fight them tooth and nail.)

So why is it anti-Semitic to note the influence of the pro-Israel lobby? And why is it unfriendly toward Israel to oppose sanctions on Iran?

If Israel is in such mortal danger every second of every day, then I suggest they move.

Am I hate speeching?

I agree with you. But, this certainly does illustrate how republicans in power aren't willing to give an inch for anything for Obama. That is why it is extremely frustrating to watch him continue to extend the olive branch and the repubs keep slapping him with that branch. Charlie Brown and Lucy ALL DAY LONG.

We should give Florida to Israel - give 'em Disney World, 3 NFL teams, mineral rights, the airports (including the planes), ... everything. If they refuse, fark 'em. Hell, I bet we could get OPEC to pay for the move.

Still trying to avoid the "angry black man" label from Fox News I guess.

That and the "I hate teh ghey" seem to be the only reasons there's opposition to him. Given the GOP platform still talks about ghey hate, I'm not sure what the real problem with Hagel.

Unless this is just blind hatred for anything Obama does.

Will somebody please put up a pic of the little girl eating crackers. Everything he does irritates them. He's a better persono than me. I would not have been able to hold me tongue this long. That is why I love that pic of Obama on the telephone with a smile and a shrug with the caption "You mad?" Cuz I know they are. I think the Republicans hate to see Obama happy at all. They can't figure out why he is so happy and they are so pissed. Their panties are all in a bunch for NOTHING.

Let Jim Webb go. He's sick of the bullsh*t. He's a man of action and a Senate that requires 60 votes for anything is just going to piss him off until he punches a b*tch. He'd get equally frustrated in the Executive. Chuck is handmade for this role. It's the closest thing I'll ever get to having Hackworth as SecDef.

Hagel is exactly the man who should run the DOD.

Yeah, but their line of reasoning would be something something stem cell research to reanimate Reagan something something. At least it would be consistent with their derpified understanding of Science.

I'm wondering what opposition to Hagel "gets" them.

They jumped all over Susan Rice for the heinous crime of reading a prepared statement containing only the information she was allowed by law to disseminate, and oh, look, John Kerry gets nominated instead, ensuring that his nice cushy Senate seat is available for poor disaffected Scott Brown.

So there must be a prize here; something above and beyond just stewing in a miasma of right wing outrage. Hagel loses the nomination for being too "controversial," and then...what? He's not in the military, he's not in Congress, opposing him doesn't seem to open up any Republican opportunities. Are they trying to drive him towards a candidate that will? Who's his second choice?

I've met him before, nice guy... he's also pretty openly about scrubbing the C-130 program, wherein the USAF is forced to buy old, shiatty planes that it doesn't want because Georgia needs jobs and money. Too proud for welfare, but not too proud for military welfare.
