Thurgood Jenkins: The MacGyver smoker is a very handy guy to have around, especially when it comes to reefer.
McGayver Friend: Hey, man, we're out of papers.
McGayver Smoker: All right. Then get me a toilet paper roll, a corkscrew and some tin foil.
McGayver Friend: We don't have a corkscrew.
McGayver Smoker: All right. Then get me an avocado, an ice pick and my snorkel.
McGayver Smoker: [Friend looks at him funny] Trust me, bro. I've made bongs with less. Hurry up!

Is "making bongs" a good enough reason to go into the glass blowing trade?

CygnusDarius: Actually, awesome is sort of terrifying.

We've kind of diluted the word 'awesome' to simply denote cool stuff. Awesome is something so mind-numbingly terrifying and beautiful without words. Awesome is what the US soldiers saw when they threw the first nuclear bombs. Awesome is when the Russians launched the first artificial satellite into space.

In college, a friend of mine had access to the optics department machine shop. The two bongs he made were named 'Fat Man' and 'Little Boy'. The latter was fairly conventional, albeit a bit taller than normal.

Fat Man lived up to its name. The height of a normal '70s acrylic bong, instead of being the typical 2" in diameter, it was a bit over 3". Given the relationship between volume and diameter, this translated to a volume of smoke which no one could finish in one pull, though many tried. You could tell from outside his room when this happened by the 5 minute coughing fit rapidly following the failed attempt.

It had one other design feature: Instead of sitting on a narrow diagonal tube which pierced the main tube, the bowl sat on a narrow vertical tube, which went straight down into the base. The base was a sandwich with the smoke channel milled into one of the pieces. Very trick to look at, but not practical - if you let off your draw too quickly, water would pop right up the bowl tube.

One other somewhat CSB: Senior year, a friend's younger brother ran a head shop out of his room. Students could run small businesses out of their rooms, with university approval. His shop was on the official "approved" list.

/Things were different in the 70s.

This was our pride back in college:

Nicknamed "Slow Child"

Removed the flag he was holding, set the bowl there and ran piping down to the middle and filled the insides with water... hit from the top of the head. Good times.

Happy 4:20pm.
I'm late? Sorry... Preoccupied going through recyclables for potential bong parts while high.

My friend tells me that glass "water pipes" retail for $150-500.
Cost of materials: $25

I know it's trashy but I do love making homemade bongs and bowls. Made one from an Easter egg and a funnel once. My pride and joy was the giant soap bottle with a stainless steel slide that you could shotgun yourself with.
