I'm glad Notre Dame is successful again. I was feeling pretty empty for a few years there, trying to work up hatred for a team that couldn't even beat Navy. Only the sight of Lou Holtz on College Gameday kept the flame alive. Now, half the time at least, I even find myself hoping they win tonight, but that's only because Nick Saban is such a dick.

Can they both lose?  I'd be happy if they both lost.

Yes. I was accepted at Alabama (I know, that's quite a feat!) but couldn't afford the tuition.

Asst. prof in the chemistry department. There were a lot of factors why I didn't go, but it wouldn't really be an upgrade over my current position -- and let's just say my wife wasn't all that thrilled about moving to rural Alabama.

I took several chemistry classes there.
I understand, rural Alabama can be quite a culture shock if one isn't accustomed to it.

I don't know how long ago you were there, but I should actually be technically correct and say that there is no "chemistry department" there anymore. Due to university political crap, it's been consolidated to "physical and earth sciences". So let's just say that funding and research space was... sub-par.

I'm getting enough culture shock in rural North Carolina as it is, since I live in redder than red county, but work in hippie liberal college bubble town.

I graduated in 1993 (bs) and 1995 (ms). There was a very good teaching chemistry department when I was there, research wise I don't know. Biology (my major) had just hired younger professors with real research experience while I was an undergraduate.

I think Texas A&M is the best team in the country right now, and if there were I playoff I would take them to win it.

You never know what youre gonna get in these national championship games. The teams havent played a game in a month. You dont know who is going to have rust, who will be off their game, etc.

On that note, go ND!

With their histories, traditions and attitudes, this is one matchup where just about every college football fan in the country has a strong opinion on both teams. Even if it is hatred for both.

Roll Tide!

I want, more than anything in this game, for that ND linebacker ESPN's been cramming down our throats all season to be bowled the fark over by UA's running backs so that Brent and Kirk will be forced to SOMEHOW explain how he's still the best in the game.

2013-01-07 12:19:31 PM
I want Norte Dame to win, for the same reason I want the Yankees to win from time to time, sports are more fun when there is a evil empire to hate. It's hard to hate on bad franchises.

Either A) Bama by 16 or B) ND wins because of either something very random or a bad call leading to a "Luck of the Irish" headline.

I mostly hope it's a good game. I'm pulling a little for Notre Dame, but, either way, history will be made.

I had a bad feeling that it's gonna be worse than last year's shiatfest.

After prayers to the attending Saint Tebow were unanswered at the Sugar Bowl, I'm wondering if Jebus is also taking the series off. If so, ND is SOL.

Catholics generally don't pray to Jebus like the protestants do. However, should they ask for a Hail Mary...

Last year I lectured at a conference hosted by an SEC school (not Alabama, BTW). Now until then I had always been either bemused by or tired of listening to the various schools' fans talk endlessly about their sports' teams successes. I'd talked smack on other boards about it and though it's not like I hated the SEC or anything, their talk was getting really old.

But it took going there to realize what's really going on. Walking around the campus and the town, it became obvious that football (and to a much lesser extent other sports) wasn't part of the place, it WAS the place. Campus shops seemed to sell nothing but sports apparel. OFF-campus shops seemed to sell nothing but sports apparel. The lead headline in the local newspaper involved the hiring of an ASSISTANT coach. When I had dinner with some university employees, they talked about how their main hobby was attending sports events--sometimes sports they didn't even care or know about that much, but so long as it was their team, they were going there! And when I asked them about their business school--a fairly-well known institution which was celebrating a major anniversary that year--I might as well have been talking about somewhere in outer space. When I asked them about art galleries or bars or theatres or anything else I could see while I was there, they sort of shrugged their shoulders. They were there, but they didn't know much of anything about them.

It just struck me as really sad. The campus and the town were beautiful places, there were all kinds of great things to do and see (and the biggest disappointment I had in going there was that I didn't have more time for those things) and yet all they could think about was football, occasionally using other sports as a withdrawal. Now, don't get me wrong, I love sports too. But the priorities just seemed so out of whack. TBH, it made me question college sports fandom entirely.

Long and short of it, I've really cut back on watching college sports after that visit. I know I'd be watching tonight's game otherwise. Now, I just don't care enough. I'm excited about certain players, maybe, but I just don't give a damn about who wins any more. Yeah, it's a totally non-Fark thing to say, but seeing all that made me think, "Whoa, what are we doing?"

I was going to say change the ND mascot to the pedophile priest halloween costume, or at least put a beer in his hand and a black eye, but figured one stereotype was good enough (and it WAS sorta clever).
