Well, the woman prominently in the picture was fat.

If there is one thing that a milk-engorged boobie is not, it is saggy.

So long as these same women are ok with some men being lecherous assholes. A little modesty goes a long way.

Don't care as long as they realize they might end up on xhamster and motherless to fulfill some niche fetish, no biatching allowed when it happens either.

It isn't disgusting (the wife did it with both our kids) but, like most of the human race, the vast majority aren't particularly exciting to see uncovered.

I'm kind of conflicted on this.

As a woman that hopes to have a child some day, it is nice to know that I should have certain rights to feed my child.  However, a sensible part of me knows that I can pack breast milk with me when I go out with my child and feed them that way.  I look at that as a courtesy to those that may be around me.  Do I think it is gross, not particularly.  It is just part of nature.  That said it would be nice if some of the "ladies" that want to breast feed in public were more discrete instead of trying to put it in your face just so you know what they are doing.  And they will be sure to announce if you have any reaction like turning away or simply walking by them without addressing them. But people like that are just assholes in general and are going to do whatever they think they can to cause trouble.

Senator Ruth Martin: What?
Hannibal Lecter: Did you breast-feed her?
Paul Krendler: Now wait a minute...
Senator Ruth Martin: Yes, I did.
Hannibal Lecter: Toughened your nipples, didn't it?

Boobies!

When I breastfed, I did it discretely. In public even! Once I breastfed at the table during dinner, no one knew. Breastfeeding doesn't equal flashing your boobies.

Yes, they do. They also have bras like that.

When my wife was breast feeding she had to keep them babies covered all the time. Otherwise it would look like a fountain was going off.

don't forget it is so good for the kid you should do it while driving!

Of all the times I have spent in malls, I have never seen a woman breastfeed. Not to say it wasn't going on. But I never noticed. It is less invasive than say, smoking or urinating in public, which I think I would notice right away.

I do question the feed-in in the article. 10 mothers brought there kids outside a mall and all 10 were hungry at the same time. That seems odd. If a few of those mothers decided not to feed the kids until the protest, there are bigger parenting issues to address.

My all-time favorite comment regarding one of these nurse-ins is from a comment on a Starbucks blog years ago. The author of said comment was named "Famous Anus," so I'm not altogether entirely sure this is legit:

I'm totally against public breastfeeding and I'll tell you why. This one time I was in Burger King, and this girl with enormous boobs--they were like 56-FFF, I know my tits--yanks one out of her blouse, then mashes her kid against it. But the kid didn't want that much, and when he pulled away, her boob wouldn't shut off. It kept spraying like a fire hose, and I got milk splashed on my hamburger, and in my Coke, and all over my pants because the thing was squirting uncontrollably all over and my kids starting screaming and hugging my leg and then the manager ran up with a handful of napkins to try to stanch the flow but he slipped in a puddle of milk and cracked his head on the end of the table and I heard that dude's like in a coma or something now and my pants smelled bad the rest of the day 'cause that stuff stinks when it gets hot. So no, I don't particularly support public breastfeeding. Thanks for listening.

I'd rather see breastfeeding than diaper-changing, and I'd rather not hear a hungry baby.  So whip 'em out, girls.

In NY, a woman can go topless anywhere a man can.

I think it is the same in Columbus Ohio as well.  I'm not really in that much of a hurry to do that to be honest.

As a 30 year old, married man who is hoping to start having kids in the next 2-3 years here is my thoughts and perspective on things:

Ladies, you are welcome and free to breast feed as you see fit in public, that being said...

My take is that breast feeding is an intimate act between mother and baby...you are literally proving life to said child, it is a beautiful thing for YOU and your spouse.  That being said, I do not want to share in your moment, nor do I think that it is heroic or worthy of any kind of praise...I mean come on, you are simply feeding your child, this is not special or unique in the animal kingdom at large or even among humanity.

Within our hypersexualized society, there is something to be said about discreteness.  Nothing you do in public is private.  Trust me, you breast feeding in public is someones fetish.  Are you prepared to end up on some tube site?  While I recognize that this is an unlikely scenario, you need to accept that it is a possibility.

This topic comes up a lot in the news and I do have some additional thoughts on the matter.  It would be cool if malls at least voluntarily set up somewhat tucked away nursing areas, one on each side of the mall.  Perhaps with one way glass?  I don't know, I am just throwing stuff out there...

Society needs to calm the fark down about a seeing a boobie.  This nations prudishness and double standards are astounding.  You freak the fark out about seeing a nursing mother, yet you watch the borderline pedo spectacle known as Toddlers and Tiaras.  I don't get it.

Finally, my simple observation on the matter is that there is a portion of women out there that view motherhood as something that is praise worthy, and with that mind set comes entitlement and attention whoring.

2013-01-07 10:13:59 AM

durbnpoisn: Yes, they do. They also have bras like that.

And they are the most ridiculous garments to untangle and fold from the laundry, aren't they? Discretion (while not something I demand from nursing women even in my heart of hearts) has never been easier with the garment options available these days, but they are complicated in construction.

littlett's: However, a sensible part of me knows that I can pack breast milk with me when I go out with my child and feed them that way.

When you're in the actual situation, and the option is pump, store, bottle, carry in a chill pack then find some place to heat it up wherever you are, whenever the baby is hungry OR just nurse with a sun hat or blanket or any of the myriad options for complete discretion at your disposal, I'd be surprised if you went with the former. Especially if the situation in question is air travel; just latch that baby on during taxi and let it fall asleep for the duration of the flight.

My wife has nursed a combined total of 4 years across our three kids and I don't think that she's ever had a breast exposed in public to anyone but the baby or maybe me sitting directly next to her. Even that was minimal.

In the Old Testamnet, Our G-D had something to say about whipping it out in front of the Noodle Express or Macy's.

Thou shalt not seethe a kid in its mother's milk  - Deuteronomy/14-21

So, HE didn't want to see this. HE wants you to do this at home in a private corner.
But, now that I think of it... Bath and Body Works might be ok.

In 63 years I've been to a lot of malls, restaurants, etc. And I've seen probably hundreds of women breast feeding their babies. Not once have I heard/seen any complaints or commotions. So where's the hate?

Pumping and storing is not really that big of a hassle. The nice thing about it is that either parent can feed the kid and the woman can pump on a schedule instead of whenever the baby felt like eating. We slowly over a week served the milk a little cooler every feeding until ours would just drink it cold. In the end, if the mother isn't working, it probably is still easier to breastfeed though.

I am a stay at home dad, and my wife breastfed the kids when she was around and when I had them I had to pack along lots of stuff in order to feed them breastmilk. Why would you want to bring along bottles, a bag of milk, a small cooler bag with an ice pack, some sort of bowl AND/OR a thermos of hot water to bring the milk back up to body temperature so the solid fats turn more back into liquid,

I was so jealous of the women who cold just whip out a boob for 5 minutes and be done with it.
