If the elk had a gun, this would never have happened.

Said this in the last thread;

All these people saying how peaceful it is and how they could walk right up to it and almost pet it so that means nothing should have been done...? Morons. This is a freaking huge wild animal. You shouldn't be getting that close to it, period.

The elk was only reaching for its wallet.

Animals behave differently here in Boulder... you can practically pet the squirrels.

OH, Boulder is just special and magical and all animals are domesticated on entering their borders! So there exists no danger.

These are the same types of morons who try to pose pictures with bears and bull moose.

I didn't know him either, but I bet I would have loved him.

Especially with a side of mashed potatoes and maybe some garlic rolls.

Hey, I'm not an idiot.  I wouldn't approach an elk.  A lot of people here ARE idiots.  *ahem* Amendment 64.

So I'm not in mourning over a dead elk.  If this is the worst case of overzealous police a city faces, that's fine with me.

7 years ago, they held a funeral for a bunch of trees that were cut down just outside Boulder, so this is not even close to the eco-freakiest thing that has happened there.

From the story:
"The grove of large cottonwood trees lining the road she had become accustomed to seeing - even searching their branches for bald eagles and raptors - had been cut down to stumps the size of pianos.

"I ended up crying the whole rest of the day," said Harley, 43.

She returned that night and apologized to the trees, but the grief didn't go away. And so Harley decided to throw the trees a funeral."

Yeah, crying isn't that too far out of line; it's a bit out there but within reason to cry over environmental destruction. Going back to apologize to the trees and then *telling people* that you did so is where you cross over to crazytown.

Why do I suspect the cop felt threatened by the elk not showing what he felt was the proper respect for and fear of a law enforcement officer?

Just protecting the public, like the Detroit Police sharpshooter who took out the last peregrine falcon threatening the city's pigeons back before the Endangered Species Act was passed.

Is there something in the water out there in Colorado? WTH? especially Aurora. These people are whacked out. Whenever I hear something weird in the news or on here, I immediately think Florida or colorado.

Boulder is the perfect example of what drugs does to people.

And what's wrong with Aurora? Yeah, we had the mass shooting last summer, but that's just the "in" thing right now...

It was illegal. Hunting out of season, no license, shooting in a residential area.
Not to mention having his buds show up to take the elk to a processing plant and not reporting it.
But then again...

Insane? Perhaps.
Baked? Definitely
Armed? Not terribly likely. Especially in a county where open carry will get you arrested for brandishing...

on the right side, there are a bunch of linked articles. apparently the officer shot it with his shotgun, out of season. apparently its being investigated as a poaching incident after his story about why he did it was questioned.

Knowing how unpredictable domestic male ungulates can be, yeah, getting that close to a wild one does seem pretty stupid. On the other hand, he was clearly past his adolescent years, so that helps. If they caught him during the rut, though...

/Hormones are dangerous.

1. It's just a big ass-deer

2. They probably shouldn't have done him in within 20 miles of bolder.

3. At least they had the decency to attempt to get him processed. Elk meat is tasty.

4. Even if they are found guilty of poaching; it will probably result in a ticket and the loss of the meat and potential loss of their jobs.

5. If they hadn't done him in; some other dumbass would have seen to it.

/ I HATE poachers; they always rile up PETA, ect and they endanger the lives of the people who own the land that they poach on.

Just can't work up the usual high degree of outrage for these cops.  Maybe our shared love of tasty elk bonds us at the top of the food chain.  Slap them on the wrists.
