At 44 seconds, the driver of the fire truck throws a lit cigarette out the window.  Job security?

I did.
I'm just saying, if you're going to put music in a video like that, put in something dramatic.
Not some stupid rap tracks. You might as well put in Yakety Sax.

At 4:45 the building on fire is the original HP Fire Station No 1.

I know how to mute the audio as well, but it's still unfortunate as it sounds like there was some worthwhile audio in the raw recordings. Not everything needs a soundtrack.

Because he shows 3 seconds from every fire I get the impression he was really trying to make a video of this Eminem video more than he was trying to make some enlightening video about being a firefighter.

I don't think that was intent, I am just saying that this video doesn't really tell a story, explain anything, show boobies, it's just visual excitement to go with the Eminem song.

Well, that was interesting. Maybe I should try quoting from the right comment next time.

The music ruined it. Would rather have heard the natural sound. Pretty cool, though. Didn't need Eminem making it sound all "tough."

Being that it is a "Michigan Thing" I'll overlook the Eminem..

They might wanna throw a NSFW audio tag on this link though...

No kidding, I saw that too.  It should have been in the title.  Plus I am betting its not even legal to smoke in a govt vehicle.

Being Detroit wouldn't it be better if they carried around flamethrowers?

I just came to say that Highland Park isn't really much of a "suburb" - it's more like an unincorporated part of Detroit.

If you are driving around Detroit, and you drive into Highland Park, you'd never notice the difference. Even neighboring Warren or Dearborn, you'd notice a slight upgrade in the scenery - Highland Park, not so much.

When I think of suburbs of Detroit, I think of Taylor, or Rochester.... outlying areas far removed from the kind of landscape associated with "deep" Detroit.

I'll remember this next time our fire department is "staging" six blocks away waiting for the cops to secure the scene.

As exciting as this video goes, there is one inescapable fact. There really aren't as many fires these days as there used to be. Many municipal fire companies are bloated and expensive relics of years past, and should be scaled back considerably. Firefighters end up going to assist EMT calls more often than fighting actual fires.

While this is true, Highland Park is a very old city and almost all of the buildings were built before fire codes were enacted. In adition, the city is full of vacant buildings and, apparently, arsonists.

Why is it you never, ever, under any circumstances, see firefighters run?   Even paramedics barely break a casual mosey.

Get in a hurry, get sloppy. Get sloppy, get hurt.

It's your emergency, not mine. My job is to take the craziness and drama out of the situation, and bring back some order. That means no screaming, no running, no demanding things from other responders, and no panicking. Absolutely agree with Dancin_In_Anson. If you're rushed, you get sloppy and careless. When you get sloppy and careless, people get hurt.

/The only time I have ever run was when I had an infant in my arms with CPR in progress, while getting her out to the ambulance.
//That was stupid of me. I could have tripped up and dropped her.

For the record, I didn't like the music either, especially since it just repeated.

And you can't really capture the sound of a structure fire, especially the large commercial structures, on a helmet cam. It's like complaining you can't smell the smoke.

I realize that being a police officer is probably one of the most difficult jobs on earth. If you're one of the good ones, then good on you. I sincerely hope you are. The fact is that about 99.9% of the pork chop patrol are scumbags, and I think I speak for all of us when I say "fark the police commin' straight out the underground..."

I, and I know I'm not the only one, am getting a little tired of the word 'hero' being applied to people
who willfully do these jobs, asked to the do these jobs and are well paid for doing dangerous work.

Yeah, they could get killed but they want to do the work; 'heroism' involves going above and beyond and for these folks it's their job.

Let it all burn, maybe it'll spread to Detroit.

MplsMedic: If you're rushed, you get sloppy and careless.

Case in point: Me at this scene. Didn't pop the interior panels to look for airbag canisters before cutting. Cut right into one. Thankfully it didn't discharge. I dodged a bullet and said so during debrief. The thing that really rattled me is that this is a pet peeve of mine and I didn't do it.  I'm still kicking myself over it.
