Wow, Wisconsin has a paper industry, didn't know that. It's funny how some things you just never think of where they come from, paper is one of them. Before hearing this, when I thought of Wisconsin I thought of cows and cheese.

I live in the big papermill area of central Wisconsin, hell the company I work for sells and repairs the radio equipment for a number of them. It's kind of sad to see the area drying up so much now that so many of the mill jobs are going. The Port Edwards mill has completely closed, the Whiting mill crews have been slashed and will be closing, the mill in my town has been dropping jobs, the Nekoosa, Mosinee, and Biron mills have drastically reduced crews in staff, and it's had a pretty major effect in this area. Other businesses have been drying up like mad, and there's not a neighborhood in the area that doesn't have at least one or more houses for sale on the block. The one new industry that was going to start in the area about 6 years ago pulled out and the local government actually had to buy the land back from those assholes. The entire region is getting an eerie ghost town feeling.

I live in Rapids, it's not that bad yet, but it's getting there. Like I was saying earlier, lots of houses and empty business buildings for sale. The cranberry industry has been growing in the area but it can only do so much.

Places over by the Fox Valley to Sheboygan will be ok; all the small time insurers (seriously it feels like there's about 80 of them from Neenah to Sheboygan) and the last of the manufacturing jobs through there can at least guarantee some semblence of a middle class and you'll always find people who go from Fond du Lac to Milwaukee everyday.

Wood County and the surrounding areas, however, have been going downhill for at least a generation. All the farmers who could sell for cranberry bogs did back in the 90's and the cash croppers barely have a pot to shiat in (not that it's a new thing). And since interstates and rail traffic aren't pristine out there they have a hell of a time getting anyone to even look at sites to put a business in.

The one I remember wasthe turbine plant that the city ended up buying the land back from. Yeah, the Nekoosa one is just off the bridge on 73. The Port Edwards one is right by the YMCA there.

One huge issue is that the paper suppliers squeezed the newspapers to the point of bankruptcy. Newspapers with declining revenues, cut pages. Mills raise price per ton to offset lower volume, papers cut back pages and edition, mills close down, Squeezing supply, prices go up. Newspapers cut back...

And on and on....

And gov regs for de-inking and recycling in the US are really almost prohibitive price wise.

It's been a slow decline, for sure. This all started in the 80's, and it's still going.

Nice to see NPR stealing ideas from the larges paper in the state; The Journal Sentinel ran a three part article on the condition of the State's paper industry three weeks ago.

We do our best to stick to north american paper. Xpedx shut down there warehouse in our area, so we lost Boise ans Wausau papers. Now our supplier (Spicers, part of Paperlinx) has 2 major house lines. One is from China, and the other is from Domtar (Ontario).

We use the paper from Ontario, because the paper from China is crap. Doesn't run worth a damn on our machines. People will bring us paper they buy at staples, and ask us to print on it. We refuse because almost anything that says "Staples" on it is made in China and is crap.

BTW, we run tons of NCR from Appleton. One of my favorite papers to run.

As someone who's cleaned out two hoarder-houses of people who couldn't throw out a book or a Rolling Stone or a twenty-year-old phone bill, and a several offices of paper-accumulators as well, the day can't come soon enough.

A similar thing happened in Maine a few years ago. There used to be a large number of paper mills, and most of them have shut down. There are a few holdouts, but paper was once a major industry for the state, and it is no longer.

Whenever the Koch brothers get mad...i fully assume they will close all the mills here in Green Bay just to make a point since i think they are union mills

Based upon Domtar's site, you would be correct. Also use alot of Carolina Cover from International Paper's Riegelwood Mill near Wilmington, NC.
