The mayor is from the Dominican Republic. The complaint alleges reverse discrimination.

This is one of the all-time most idiotic phrases. Discrimination is just discrimination.

It's all temp gigs.

There are no benefits. There is no useful medical care. There is no "affordable coverage". There are no pensions within a day after retirement. There are no long range advantages. There is no loyalty and no respect. It's ALL plug and play labor. All of it.

And the thin slimy film that is the buffer between the people making millions and the wage monkeys bringing it in the door are the same toadying sh*tbags who, thousands of years ago, whipped their own tribesmen half to death in exchange for a few pieces of gold and an extra ration of food and a nifty hat that said "I'M IN CHARGE HERE". The story doesn't change. Just the trinkets and bread crusts used to distract us from noticing that it doesn't change.

The only way to kill a leviathan is to starve it. And as long as we're willing to have our time on this earth used as a disposable component in somebody else's quest for their second billion, it ain't gonna change.

Being on the other end of this stick sometimes with my company, while I feel for people going through their crisis, it isn't any easier on the company sometimes.

"Sorry boss, but I won't be in for the next two weeks. No, 8 weeks. Oh, 5 months. No, wait, I will be back next month. or the month after." "Not sure what you are going to do about all the work I normally do, given that you can't hire someone else to do it (union rules) or train someone else to do it (not enough time), or find someone else to do it (remote location), or... And, I may come back to work for a couple weeks, then take another couple weeks off, then come back to work for six months, then do the whole thing over again, and again, and again."

We have people here who make a living at taking time off. It's practically a guarantee that as soon as they have their required hours for a year on their paycheck, they will come in with a doctor's note "Johnny cannot work for 4 months, due to personal medical conditions requiring treatment", and take the next 4 to 6 months off.

"Well, we got all the ducks in a row to make millions. Now we just have to hire people who know how to do this and make sure they do the work."

"I don't wanna f*ck with all that sh*t. Just hire a couple of goons and give them some tassley shoes and make them wear a suit and let them herd the monkeys."

"Don't you want to have your company be a well run and respe..."

"What I want is to knock this motherf*cker together for cheap, take in billions, gut it, foist it off on some broker who'll turn it into derivatives, sell the portfolio before it tanks and buy my mistress a new Lexus. I'll be in the Caymans. Don't call me unless this motherf*cker burns down."

This is the private sector success story of the week.

What the "public service sector" learned long ago is that their money lies in a steady stream of grift, graft, favors granted and an endless parade of disposable workers and bureaucrats. Their feeding tube is best served by their leviathan like girth and almost impossible to dismantle institutionalization.

Predators or leeches.

Either way, they're just gonna use people as spackling compound until cracks get to big to care about and then leave the ruins.

And if you're one of those people filling in the cracks, you are disposable. Because when you keep adding mouths to feed to a planet that is coming up with fewer ways to honestly create or administer wealth or even sustenance, you are a liability to the people whose only motive is to have more than the other guy.

And you know why all this keeps working?

Because for every self important dickwad who will happily step on some guy's face for a few bucks or to feel the tingle of a power boner, there's a thousand people with sore faces who will happily acquiesce to the notion that "that's just the way it is".

Ummmm..... traditionally patronage has most often been handed out to people in one's own ethnic group. If the mayor was white and handed out city jobs to only whites, the howls of "racism!" would be heard from there to Alaska. sorry, it has to work both ways. racism? Yes, yes indeed.

LesserEvil: Well, the Hispanic guy they replaced him with has no experience and is sitting in jail.

Why exactly did they think this guy made a good replacement?

Ya normally I'd call bullshiat on something like this. Just a guy whining because he wanted to take unlimited off time. I mean while death in the family is tragic, you still gotta do your job if you want to stay employed. So I'll defend an employer who says "Sorry man, you've taken too much time off, we have to let you go."

However given that his replacement seems to have no experience in it and is, in fact, in jail and thus not available to work, well it seems like it was cronyism. They are probably just going for the discrimination angle because it is easier to prove/more money. It does seem like they are on to something though. If the guy was fired for lack of availability at work, why then would it be ok for his replacement to be in jail, and thus not available for work? A guy with no credentials, no license, and an outstanding restraining order (which will show up on a standard background check that all government jobs do) is just about the worst candidate you can get.

Hrist: Taken to extremes, 99.999% of money will end up in the hands of an elite few. That other .001% will end up in the hands of the rest of us. The only thing that will keep it in balance is the fact that if any work is to be done, they'll have to balance out the rapidly starving labor pool with enough wages to keep a couple of workers fed and healthy enough to do their jobs. So bread won't go to $20 a loaf, it'll just be $8.99 a loaf when you're making a penny an hour. That means that the best of the best will be able to afford a loaf of bread each week.

As far as can be gleaned from precedents, once it starts to approach that sort of extreme, a lot of motherf*ckers end up on the ass end of an armed and starving populace, hoist upon their own petard. History ins't an agony aunt with an advice column. History is a coroner. And if you blow him off, you can sell your bad decisions to Jesus, cause history isn't interested.

Using currency to represent an interest in or an opinion on something is a good idea. It's job is to move around and facilitate getting things done that are beneficial to the people who support the currency.

Sucking that currency's dick like it's some deity has gotten us here.

Acting like, if can somehow grab more of it and hoard it or use it as a weapon, you win something is the height of idiocy.

This case doesn't seem to be one where the guy was playing the system. His wife will only die once.

Since he was ultimately replaced by a guy who is now in jail, this lawsuit might be legitimate. At a minimum, he should be immediately reinstated since there is an opening.

The oppressed never really want freedom, just a chance to wear the oppressor's suit. So, would he have gotten fired after caring for his sick wife for all that time if he weren't white? Very sad, but he didn't qualify for FMLA.

The fact his replacement was unqualified and of a different race doesn't negate the fact that he was ineligible to return to work under the FMLA.

The only way he'd have a case is if there are other people who were allowed to return to work under similar circumstances (ie, not FMLA eligible) and they were predominantly of one race (ie, Hispanic).

Absolutely ridiculous. I've dealt with a similar situation - a few years back, I was working a job in sales. My father was in the last days of his life (cancer as well), and I explained to management when was going on, and obviously that I would be missing work time to visit him and attend the funeral. After it was all said and done, I was written up for not meeting monthly quota and terminated.

fark that company. At some point you would think humanity would come over numbers.

In the meantime Tom's position as a laborer has been filled by Jose Santiago, a former state representative who is currently sitting in jail after he was arrested early Saturday for violating a restraining order.
Lantigua is a funny mix of fixing some problems while being corrupt enough to make a Louisiana politician blush.
