"I'd rather go ice fishing, which is the dumbest thing a man can do. You're sitting essentially in an out house and it's 30 below. You've cut a hole in the ice, and you're fishing for fish that you shouldn't eat, 'cause any fish that is down there is farking stupid."

This Detroit-area reporter would probably crap ice-bricks if she ever ventured up to Tip-Up-Town, USA, in Houghton Lake, MI. It's more a beer-drinking festival than an ice-fishing one, but they have a carnival with a Ferris wheel, concert stage, beer tent, and helicopter rides, all on the ice.

While it's been colder than LAST (un)winter, it's still pretty iffy IMO to go out there. It's not been that cold for very long, and it's getting warm again.

Every year my buddy tries to sell me on ice fishing.

Time away from the family, lots of BBQ, good beer.......but it always falls apart when it comes to how ungodly cold it gets.

Sorry....the fish and I are taking the season off. Tell them to look for my fly line in April.

I have ice fishing gear my grandfather used in the 1930s.  In Lake St Clair or the Detroit River.  It's really, really, really not unheard of here.  However, what is heard of is stupid people expecting the lake to be properly frozen and going out the same time of year they always do without proper precautions... when the past decade has been really way too effing warm for that.

Anyway.  Drinking and fishing always go together.  It's just a touch more dangerous when it's ice fishing and drinking, and it's an annual FYI public service article so the authorities have to deal with fewer frozen/drowned people.  (shrug).

I enjoy ice fishing a couple times a year. Don't go when it's wicked cold though. Much below mid 20s and I'm staying home.

Ice fishing is a blast. Some of the best fishing for the big macs (30-50 lbs.).

You just have to have a little common sense when you do it. People here have been ice fishing for the past couple weeks here. There is around 18" in spots so far.

I never understood ice fishing. I grew up in Northern Maine, I bought my own snowmobile at age 12 with my paper route money, I enjoyed cross country skiing, I played Ice hockey every weekend at an outdoor rink starting at age 5, but sitting in the middle of a frozen lake and fishing never had any appeal too me.

The ice finally got 4"s thick here, so my kid is getting excited. There was two reports, that I am aware, of guys heading out too soon and falling through. I am glad they were alone or someone might make the mistake of following through the ice after them.

* If you hear the ice crack or detect unsafe ice you should stay spread out, immediately lie down (which will distribute your weight) and crawl back to safer ice by the same way you came.

If the ice isn't talking to you, then you probably shouldn't be on it. You should be hearing popping and cracking a little bit. I've had the ice crack below my feet, it's kind if eerie.

Being formerly from Wisconsin, I like to tell my friends and relatives from more urbanized areas that we don't really deal with homicides where we're from - rather we have our casualties from hunting accidents and ice fishing drownings.

"along with a life jacket and screwdriver."

Life jacket should be auto inflate type. Others are to bulky to wear over cold weather outerwear. Screwdriver? And keep it where? In your pocket? Good luck getting it out while half paralyzed from the frigid water. Should always wear a pair of ice fishing picks around your neck attached to a length of cord. Always within easy reach. Picks can be commercially bought or home made from dowels and heavy nails ground to a point. Screwdriver. I LOL'd. I don't ice fish, but know the safety precautions one should take.

Living in Wisconsin (and an avid open water fisherman), I can tell you that some ice fishermen are just nuts. I know people who will ice fish on 1" of ice, and bring along picks to pull themselves out if they fall in. They wear waterproof gear (ie arctic armor), then just keep fishing and break up the ice when it forms on their gear. Actually it is amazing that more people don't die ice fishing.

Tip #36: If you are going to throw a lighted stick of dynamite in order to create the hole in the ice that you will fish out of, don't bring your dog if he likes to retrieve things that you throw like sticks.

Telling Michiganders not to ice fish is an exercise in futility.

Fishing on Lake Champlain between VT and NY. On Kelly bay you can see them out there within feet of the open water. Ice only inches thick if that. Comes a south wind and breaks off a floe you head north to Quebec in a hurry. Better to buy the fresh perch from the Barcomb boys or may be the Martins.

Michigan?

*clicks article*

Michigan.

Wonder if the ice is thick enough back home yet.  I stared at my uncle and cousin in bemusement as they huddled over a hole in the ice in 15 degree weather last year.
