Well, to be fair Pertussis was never on the edge of being eliminated entirely like some of the other diseases that we've clamped down on through vaccination. People failing to properly vaccinate probably doesn't help, though.

//And Measles and Mumps coming back are pretty much entirely the anti-vaccine idiots' fault.

2013-01-06 08:37:20 AM
The best thing I've heard is that the vaccines many of us had as kids lose their effectiveness over many years, so we're vulnerable now too!

/And let's not forget to give thanks to the right parties. I'm talking about you, evolution and mutation.

Ok retro fans. You can have your bad music, crazy hair and awful clothes, but we'll resign insidious, infectious diseases to history. Deal?

I hate to defend someone with a lot of blood on her hands, but raise your hand if you knew you had to be vaccinated again for some diseases because the vaccine loses effectiveness over time. I sure as hell didn't.

You mean you never had a booster shot?

Do... do you never go to the doctor or something? Because that's the reason you have to transfer your medical records every time you get a new doctor for your basic checkups, and they'll check that for you every time you go in for one at the GP.

But yeah, I guess if you can't afford 30-50$ to see a doctor every couple of years to get reminded of this, remember that you need boosters something like once a decade. Not for whooping cough, obviously, that's not terribly dangerous if you're not an infant (or so old that someone else is doing your medical stuff anyhow), but for a number of other things. I don't know the list offhand, if I'm remembering right the MMR vaccine's on it, at least.

Anyone who thinks that a whore with fake tits famous only for showing them in Playboy knows more about vaccines than doctors should have their kids taken from them.

Jim_Callahan: Not for whooping cough,

Actually, this is false. Doctor told me recently that they are recommending Pertussis booster shots now because of studies showing the shot you get as an infant does not last as long as they thought.

They are bundling with the Tetanus booster so you get both in one now. This is new and was totally surprising because I didn't recall reading anything on it in the news.

Oh, ok, I stand corrected.

In my defense, the nurse practitioner for my last set just called it "the tetanus booster" so I guess I just missed that one.

Damnit. The headline had me hoping she'd contracted polio or something. Isn't it about time Anonymous got busy with that?

2013-01-06 09:55:14 AM
The spread of diseases we had eradicated in the 50's that are coming back now is due in part to the large influx of people not vetted through the normal immigration process, as well as lack of immunization.

Jenny would have much more credibility if she took her top off.

Stop being part of the problem! Idiot. You think I'm actually going to believe some website that collects conspiracy theories over, say, SCIENCE?

2013-01-06 10:25:31 AM
The sad truth is you have to take some responsibility to know about these things, or at least ask your doctor. Most GP's anymore just want to deal with whatever your immediate problem is and get you out the door so they can see another patient.

The information is readily available. Googling "adult vaccine schedule" took me to this in two clicks:

For Everyone: Easy-to-read Schedules

Even if you don't have health insurance or a GP, you can get just about any standard vaccine from any clinic, including "minute clinics" at pharmacies.

/ travels in Asia often. You better believe I keep my vaccinations current.

I'm torn.

On the one hand, I don't want a kid getting killed because their parent is an idiot, never mind all the innocents who *can't* get vaccinations for whatever reason and get infected by someone who could.

On the other hand... Evolution in action. The "I'm going to believe the tits rather than the PHD" gene is something humanity could do without

2013-01-06 11:25:54 AM
I'm not looking forward to my next Pertussis shot. The last time I got one I ended up with all of the mild and moderate side-effects, only managing to dodge "uncontrollable crying", "permanent neurological damage", and "death". Ended up unable to get out of bed for three days.

If you're pregnant, you probably need a pertussis shot yourself near the end to protect your baby. The risk of the newborn contracting it before they can receive their own shot (at 2 months ?) is too high at the moment.

/ round here, anyway.

Mercury only taken out for P.R. reasons, never been shown to be a problem.
No evidence that many vaccines at once is a problem; eating a clod of dirt while a toddler provides a bigger antigenic challenge.
All medicines have side effects, all a population-based risk-benefit analysis. Preventing a million cases of polio balances out the less than one-in-a-million severe adverse effects.

The evolution part isn't even effective. 1,000s of children under the age of one got pertussis, 18 died. Not only is that an unnecessary burden on health care, you aren't getting the survival of the fittest benefit. It's actually doubly hurting.

Only conspiracy theorists can cast aspersions instead of providing actual counterarguments.

"wow, dynomutt is a colossal idiot" - Really? How many kilocalories of glycogen were put out by brain cells did that quip take to come up with?

Nope, they add the mercury in, under a different name by the compound.

No, all you jokers can do is claim indignation at someone providing evidence describing a view that is different than the one that has been fed to you by entities that you trust that routinely lie to you.

I can't stand that woman, and I'm not sure why. It's not the anti-vax stuff. She just looks like a colossal biatch or something. A narcissist. Which would explain why she thinks that her opinion about medicine is better than, say, a medical doctor's. Lots of medical doctors.

so at what point do we just put the luddites on ignore?
There is not a single scientific study pointing to vaccines CAUSING autism.
There is a TON of studies showing that vaccines greatly reduce the chance of death. Much greater reduction than the chance of death from said vaccines.

You need to find some updated research. Even though there is not one study that ties Mercury/Thimerisol to autism, the manufacturers stopped using it as a preservative in most vaccines just to make crazy moms happy.

8 years ago, IIRC, there was only one of the shots that was still available with thimeresol and our pediatrician bought the version without, but gave us the option to choose the cheaper one with the preservatives.

2013-01-06 02:17:11 PM
Just like an airplane crash, there are usually multiple contributing factors. Although Jenny McCarthy is certainly to blame for her rantings about the dangers of mercury enemas or whatever she's into, and possibly her "crystal child's" illnesses could have been prevented with proper pre-natal care or caught with an amniotic fluid test, the real issue here is some dipshiat stuck his dick in crazy and knocked her up in the first place.

I hope you are a troll.

I had a "debate" with an anti-vaccer on facebook. I told her why vaccines are safe, linking to peer reviewed studies stating my points. Her response? "You believe the government? They are trying to kill us". Sad thing is, she is pregnant and already has a kid.
