How DARE a campaign use NUMBERS and ANALYSIS and use them better than guys who just BELIEVE?

Seriously kids, if you're outrage is that someone mounted a smarter campaign, then maybe you lost the point of the argument...

The ground game has always been how you win elections, Obama's people just harnessed technology to have a better ground game. It's hilarious that in WND-land, that's now something big and scary.

Look at that, the white candies don't make up a majority in that picture. No wonder the GOP is so steamed.

OMG, those comments in the article!
"Fact: Obama only won in states where voter ID was NOT required (i.e. illegal votes). He won by margins as high as 140%! So not only did Romney not win a single vote, Obama got more votes in a county than people that live there! He cheated, plain and simple! "

This is just depressing

so....scanning tfa - the enemy of the GOP are ppl who network and have math skills?

we need all the nerds we can get

""Smoke filled rooms" that in bygone days were the domain of ward bosses are about to be replaced with "computer caves" where the denizens are increasingly likely to be academics more comfortable with a computer keyboard who have never actually had an in-person conversation with a voter. "

Gods.. they will NEVER get it. All the geeks and info do is allow the campaign to directly PERSONALLY engage with voters about the issues that actually matter to them. It INCREASES AND IMPROVES direct voter contact, not replaces it. Those 'bosses' in their smoke filled rooms were the ones not having in-person conversations which is why they will lose to the new approach.

Something they did because they learned their lesson after they didn't load test it in 2008. Of course, in 2008, unlike Romney, they weren't stupid enough to do away with the paper system altogether.

As someone who was working WITH those nerds in an Obama campaign office in one of North Carolina's population centers, I can wholeheartedly agree. We used technology a lot - but almost all of my day was contact with voters. Technology is a tool. You can embrace it and use it, you can ignore it, or you can attempt and fail (hello, Mitt).

2013-01-06 01:11:11 AM

Sam Seder used a great description, Liberals are inclined to error on the side of helping someone out knowing that a few people will abuse the system. Republicans don't want to take the chance of someone getting something they're not entitled to.

NobleHam: Obama had a massive campaign apparatus in place with boots on the ground all around the country. The organization of this apparatus was helped by technology, but technology didn't win the election for him.

Very much this. I put in a ton of man hours recruiting the people to staff each precinct in Florida, and each of those people had to take a day off from work on election day to do the boring job of sitting in a precinct checking off names and inputting them into Narwhal (well, by election day they were calling it GORDON). For two months straight I was on my phone weekly calling to wrangle people into volunteering, not to mention wrangling people into volunteering to phone bank for the election day volunteers. The tech made organizing simpler, but I can speak from personal experience that it still took a ridiculous number of man hours to even get the boots on the ground.

2013-01-06 01:19:03 AM
2008 - "Obama was a community organizer? LOL WTF kind of lame job is that?"

2009, 2013 - "OMG Obama organized communities! How did he do that? He must be a wizard!"

"Smoke filled rooms" that in bygone days were the domain of ward bosses are about to be replaced with "computer caves" where the denizens are increasingly likely to be academics more comfortable with a computer keyboard who have never actually had an in-person conversation with a voter.

So it must really suck to know that you lost the popular vote.

2013-01-06 01:27:53 AM
What gets lost in all this is Obama wiped the floor with Mitt Romney as a CEO. That's all a campaign is - you're the CEO of a company whose business is to get you elected. You have to hire/manage people, build technology, pitch to investors, advertise, etc.

People who say Obama has no business experience are total idiots. Being a presidential candidate is one of the most challenging CEO gigs on the planet, and Obama just demolished a competitor whose CEO had made hundreds of millions in private industry.

yup, I was doing the same thing in central pennsylvania.  I actually did a lot of data entry, scheduling and phone banking.  plus filled in wherever I could.  the tech used by the Obama campaign was pretty nifty and pretty robust...but it was the people that made the difference.  we busted our asses to get voters to the polls on election day and that's what did the trick.  not numbers on a computer screen, but people actually out there casting their vote.

Anybody else like to have an INTELLIGENT opposition of the Democratic Party?

They don't accuse them of hating America. Or being godless, Socialists who have abortions just the hell of it. Their not afraid to criticize big business when they do unethical shait that farks up our economy or environment. They don't see the Military as an extension of their manhood. They follow basic math and logic.

Or did the Democrats take them all?

The difference is Mitt Romney made his hundreds of millions as the CEO of a company that collected massive subsidies from the federal government. As soon as the federal government stopped supporting his businesses, he failed miserably. President Obama doesn't need the federal government's help to succeed.
