What about the words "minor league deal" does Subby fail to understand?

Well, that's the league the Cubs are playing in right? Or does it just seem that way?

Leave the Cubs alone. Particularly their fan base--what with all the stairs at Wrigley and all.

As a Cards fan I welcome this big pick up.

I don't see how that invalidates the point. It's the cubs. It's Dontrelle Willis. Peanut butter and Jelly and the bread is made of dynomite.

Always wanted Willis to make a comeback. Hope this works out for him.

If we keep talking about the cubs, they'll never go away.

If nothing else, Dontrelle can hit.

Also, Lincecum is Dontrelle 2.0. Great young pitcher who relies on his flexibility for his unconventional delivery. Gets older, fills out, loses flexibility, loses it somewhat.

Lincecum's better than Dontrelle, but same pattern applies.

Will he be available for birthday parties and bar mitzvahs?

Meanwhile, Rangers have signed Lance Berkman for a year to DH

He was good out of the bullpen in long relief for the Reds two years ago. Signing him to a minor league deal sounds good to me

The Bestest: Meanwhile, Rangers have signed Lance Berkman for a year to DH

Probably just so they can get him into the clubhouse and beat the shiat out of him for tying up Game Six of the World Series.

Dontrelle didn't lose it "somewhat". All of his talent completely disappeared. Sad to see, especially when Jim Leyland kept giving him chance after chance after chance after chance after chance.

Have you not watched Donnell play the past fee years? Even a minor league deal is too much for him.

Yeah, Dontrelle's got very little left. The somewhat was more referring to Lincecum. I was saying this a few years ago about Lincecum, but people weren't really listening.

I wouldn't sign Dontrelle Willis to pitch for my tee-ball team.

..and they're still trying to find someone to take Alphonso Soriano from them

Well he threw 199 innings last year so...... what's that? It's 199 innings over the last FIVE seasons? Oh......

Say what you will, but just by the moves they have already made, the Cubs will be better than last year.

Last year they evaluated all the talent they needed to see. It produced awful baseball, but they needed to do it.

This year they can bring in some short term contracts to field a decent team until the current regime's draft picks start coming through the pipeline in a few years.

The denial of these teams/fans is just about atrocious.

If you're relying on your draft picks to pick up the club, the Astros are better off with Luhnow than the Cubbies are with Epstein. Luhnow actually has a history of successful player development - he ran the Cards' minor league system long enough so that a lot of his guys are moving into the roster now - Kozma, Craig, Freese, Jay, Garcia, and Lance Lynn were all his guys. His drafts from 2005-2007 produced 24 major leaguers, the best record over that time.

Epstein, however, is a wheeler-dealer type, not a draft-and-wait type. Look at how he won in Boston - snapping up talent from financially destitute teams like Minnesota, Cleveland, and Kansas City, then bringing in high-end free agents to buy a championship. The only guy on that 2004 team that was drafted by the BoSox was Varitek, who'd been playing since before Epstein was out of college. He managed to get Lester, Pedroia, and Youkilis, but under his watch, the BoSox bought a lot more talent than they drafted. Maybe there's enough money in Chicago that he can do it again, but I wouldn't expect a youth movement in Chicago any time soon.
