Interesting side story - when they took DNA from just about whole population of Iceland, they found that, as you'd expect, most of male chromosomes traced back to Viking genes. But the female ones mainly Scottish and Irish.

Suggested explanation was that the boys, with few prospects at home, went adventuring. But couldn't get many female volunteers for a long cold sea voyage in an open boat. Solution was to stop off at Scotland and Ireland and grab some women on the way through.

you are a puppet: As soon as Girl becomes legal I'd like to bang her. Currently, I would like to bang Girl's mom.

FTA:  "A 15-year-old is suing the Icelandic state for the right to legally use the name given to her by her mother..."

ICELAND LAWS: 1. Has no sodomy laws, the age of sexual consent is 14 for all.

You go ahead and wait. I already bought my ticket.

/How do you say "where is Girl" in Icelandic?

bhcompy: So Blaer isn't on the list but Bjork is. Wonderful

Well, Björk is a traditional Icelandic girl's name, meaning "birch".
I don't have a complete problem with there being some sort of limit on names to prevent things that are blatantly offensive or potentially damaging to the child, but it seems like instead of having a set approved list, they should have rules about what is excluded and if there are specific names that need to be called out as not allowed, do so.
Being stuck the name of "Girl" seems more damaging than the name the mother gave her.

This will just make pre-filtering resumes and job applications all the more difficult. Now, it's like there's a built in early warning system: "Sorry BrayDen & Kynydy, not even gonna need to waste valuable seconds looking at your 'qualifications'"

In a country comfortable with a firm state role, most people don't question the Personal Names Register, a list of 1,712 male names and 1,853 female names that fit Icelandic grammar and pronunciation rules and that officials maintain will protect children from embarrassment

When you got the left (OMG bullying embarrassing names OMG) and the right (you will obey and use only names linguistically correct to continue tradition), you probably should know by then that the legislation is not the best idea

Do you know why I know you don't understand genetics?

ok you cd be right - here's a link which seems to support what I've said:
The ancestry of the settlers is more controversial. Historical evidence suggests that not all of the settlers in Iceland originated from Scandinavia (Jones 1984). At the very least, it is believed that the settlers included a number of women and slaves from Norse settlements in the British Isles. There are numerous references in Icelandic medieval writings to the keeping of slaves, many of whom were obtained through raids on settlements in the British Isles (Jones 1984). Thus, the Icelandic founding gene pool may have received a substantial maternal contribution from the British Isles.

Link

or did l express it poorly in Boobies?

feel free to suggest a link which educates me (seriously)

Uh, the genetics fail that lack of warmth was pointing out wasn't that the Icelandic gene pool has British and other ancestry in it, it's that you apparently think males and females from the same gene pool have two separate sets of genes.

Being isolated, Icelandic is more like Old Norse than the other Scandinavian languages and maintains some of its arcane features. It has four cases for nouns. So people don't know how to say "Blaer's" or "to Blaer" or "I just farked Blaer."

A blacklist I would get. I shudder to think how many two and three year old Mileys and Britneys are running around here. But a whitelist of names? That's a little oversteppy, IMO.

Yummy daughter and quite a nice milf with her. I would make the younger, hotter one happy first then go for the older one on round two.

Anyway, it is absolutely insane that any government would force a list of less than 2000 male and 2000 female names on its citizens (More like prisoners in this case). The icelanding folks should revolt.

Glancing Blow: Nice to see that the priests are enforcing the laws of the state, no need for religious freedoms here - move along.

I'm sure that the Church of Iceland would be interested to know that their constitutionally protected status as the national church is meaningless, proven by the fact that some ignorant American numpty read an article somewhere.

namatad: just look at Emily. In 2000, we saw Emily (25714), Emilee (920), Emely (603), Emilie (563), Emmalee (225), Emalee (122), Emiley (67), Emili (66), Emilly (57), Emmaleigh (56), Emeli (46), Emileigh (41), Emelie (40), Emalie (39), Emaleigh (33), Emmalie (28), Emmily (26), Emylee (22), Emmalea (20), Emmaly (19), and Emaly (18).

Quantum Apostrophe: Stone Meadow: "Whoa, how does one say "MILF" in Icelandic?"

Mïlfstødtïr.

I'll hazard a guess that that translates to "MILF's daughter." Must run in the family.

QUICK
how many spellings of karen, chris, kathy, cindy
oh nvm

so
WHICH name as the most spelling variants??

I remember reading years ago the "Elizabeth" has the most variants: Elizabeth, Liz, Beth, Betsy, Bets, Liza, Ellie, and so on. That's not counting weird spellings like "Ellizybeth" or such.

You sound old.  If you want to name your kid LeHyphenA I'm ok with that.  At eighteen the kid can decide whether to keep it or not.  You get twenty six characters, use them as you feel best, So Le-A.

26 letters. So you put a hyphen in there. haha

On one hand, I don't think the government should control what you can name your kid.  On the other, seeing what some people in this country choose to saddle their offspring with.......I can understand it's usefulness.
