skinink: "Given names are even more significant in tiny Iceland that in many other countries: Everyone is listed in the phone book by their first names."

Icelandic surnames are based on the father's forename (or sometimes the mother's), with an 's' to make it possessive and then -son or -dóttir. Hence "Björk Guðmundsdóttir".

Bennie Crabtree: The language has a very peculiar sort of grammar, and names are essential to how a society organizes itself.

Wut? It's just another Northern Germanic language...grammatically organized like modern German, Danish, etc., with a few oddities from being isolated for centuries.

If you don't give your special snowflake a ridiculously spelled, awkward sounding name, how will the world (and your snowflake) know that they are the most special snowflake?

This seems a bit like a Daily Fail type of non-story, attention-seeking article. The mother knew about this "problem" when the baby was baptized. It's been an ongoing issue for Girl for her entire life -- not something that's suddenly been imposed by the government. They've chosen to continue using a non-approved name for 15 years, so why are they talking to the media and posing for photos now?

Sybarite: If I became dictator, a list of approved names (each with only ONE spelling) would be published within my first 100 days. Go find another outlet for your "creativity."

The douchebagginess of your post matches the douchebagginess of your profile.

Carry on.

ICELAND LAWS: 1. Has no sodomy laws, the age of sexual consent is 14 for all.

So? What is it? Ieland?

My mother grew up in the sticks. Her brother was born and he was named after my grandfather. My mother was born. I'm not sure where the first name came from, but the middle one came from her uncle. I've seen her birth certificate, so I know. When the third and final child came along, my grandmother was adamant that my aunt wasn't getting named after anyone in my grandfather's family. My grandfather opened the paper and named her after the first two names he saw. I guess she's lucky she didn't "Daily Harold" for a name.

/Mom's name is Eugene, but she switched it to her maiden name when she married.

Glancing Blow: Nice to see that the priests are enforcing the laws of the state, no need for religious freedoms here - move along.

I'm sure that the Church of Iceland would be interested to know that their constitutionally protected status as the national church is meaningless, proven by the fact that some ignorant American numpty read an article somewhere.

namatad: just look at Emily. In 2000, we saw Emily (25714), Emilee (920), Emely (603), Emilie (563), Emmalee (225), Emalee (122), Emiley (67), Emili (66), Emilly (57), Emmaleigh (56), Emeli (46), Emileigh (41), Emelie (40), Emalie (39), Emaleigh (33), Emmalie (28), Emmily (26), Emylee (22), Emmalea (20), Emmaly (19), and Emaly (18).

At an October ceremony in the Satara district in India's Maharashtra state, 285 girls were allowed to change their names, as each of them had originally been named the Hindi word "Nakusa," which translates to "unwanted" (expressing their parents'disappointment at not having had a son). In Satara, only 881 girls are born for every 1,000 boys, reportedly the result of abortion, given the expense of raising a girl (whose family is expected to pay for any wedding and give a dowry to the groom's family).

(this came from a site that has a lot of stories about names Link )

I have a 20-something client whose name is pronounced "Katey" (normally short for Katherine or Katrina) but it's spelled "K.T." and the punctuation is legally part of her name. The IRS seems to be OK with it on 1099s.

Yummy daughter and quite a nice milf with her. I would make the younger, hotter one happy first then go for the older one on round two.

Anyway, it is absolutely insane that any government would force a list of less than 2000 male and 2000 female names on its citizens (More like prisoners in this case). The icelanding folks should revolt.

2013-01-05 05:00:15 PM
Interesting side story - when they took DNA from just about whole population of Iceland, they found that, as you'd expect, most of male chromosomes traced back to Viking genes. But the female ones mainly Scottish and Irish.

Suggested explanation was that the boys, with few prospects at home, went adventuring. But couldn't get many female volunteers for a long cold sea voyage in an open boat. Solution was to stop off at Scotland and Ireland and grab some women on the way through.

And just to be clear, Blaer has been on this approved list, but only for boys, since it takes the masculine declension. Oh, and it's been on and off the list a few times. They can't make up their minds.

don't they have nicknames over there? can't the girl just have a her legal name and then have "blaer" as her nickname among family? is that so hard?
