So is Buckwild the new reality show that will constantly be referenced everywhere, like Jersey Shore? Should I brush up on what it is so that I won't be utterly lost while surfing the internet?

Back in olden days people would gawk at the antics of the village idiot. Nothing has changed...well, except for the fact that the village idiot got paid in scraps of food rather than big piles of cash.

I grew up in West Virginia, so I kind of feel obligated to watch it, after all the butthurt my high school classmates have been posting on Facebook.

to put it in perspective, is more than 1 million viewers who watched the premiere of Jersey Shore

1 million more than? more than the 1 million? Did watching the show make you functionally retarded?

This whole concept pisses me off. This is why:

If you give young people something good to watch, they'll watch it. MTV is getting away with the bare minimum effort, and they should all be hung in a public square for it.

My 6th-grade curriculum for general music was Music & The Movies. It was all stuff they'd heard -- Also Sprach Zarathustra to Eine Kleine Nachtmusik to Star Wars. As a reward, at the end of the year, we watched Amadeus. (I censored the naughty bits with my arm when the time came up at the beginning.) Mind you, the kids knew that Salieri and Mozart weren't even rivals. Those kids, in inner-city Phoenix, LOVED that movie. LOVED IT! Blockbuster Video on 40th St. and Thomas couldn't even keep it on the shelf in Spring because the kids were making their parents rent it! I even had a kid who was sick when we watched it and he came in after school and asked if he could watch the ending. They learned that Mozart was the first Rock Star. And then came the questions: "Did he really just hear that stuff in his head and write it down?" They even loved the piece of the documentary we watched in which they explained how Mozart stole the "Miserere" from the Vatican IN HIS HEAD, when he was 12 years old, went back to Salzburg, and wrote it down. 8-part antiphonal choir. The kids were saying, "NO WAY!" Mozart was that good.

The fault doesn't lie with the young folks. The fault is with corporate America and the crap they foist on the kids. I have very high hopes for this younger generation. They'd rather have cell phones than cars because being in contact with their friends is more important to them. (This has been studied. Lots.) They're good kids. They're YOUR kids. We need to stop having such low expectations for them, because they're better and smarter than you. Raise your expectations.

My generation (the Farker generation, basically) is not going to save this country. Your kids are going to step up to a different economy and a different way of doing things. Don't hinder them. Don't try to stop them. Let them do their thing.

Thus endeth the lesson.

PS. Spongebob Squarepants is one of the smartest things on TV. Hand to God.

I tuned in for a bit for similar reasons. It's a stupid show that doesn't deserve attention, but holy shiat is that Bengali girl hot.

Just watched the first 30 seconds past the intro.  It looks like they are reading off cue cards.  And poorly.  I knew the others are scripted but damn, I know school plays with better acting.

No, Gen X will probably be forced to fix everything.  And we will.

Then we'll be blamed for causing the problem and the Millennials will take all the credit.

Highest 18-49 rating in cable besides Fiesta Bowl stuff and a Big Bang repeat. Also did better than repeat/reality programming on the non-CBS networks.

You can call those ratings shiat all you want while the producers laugh at you from their mansions. It's not the three channel universe anymore, they're in big time money making ratings territory assuming it doesn't slide.

So basically your groundbreaking opinion is that less of a percentage of Americans are watching any single show? Like maybe because the entertainment options are spread a lot thinner than the days of 31/2 networks?

Cutting edge, man. Cutting edge.

duckpoopy: This show obviously demonstrates how stupid everyone from West Virginia is. Their persecution complexes are well deserved.

Agreed, but I would add to that, any place in the country (and world for that matter) that allows MTV to film in their area is pretty stupid. It is not like this is something new after all.

Also, I do not doubt that the good folks of Sissonville, WV had several good laughs at the expense of the Seaside Heights crew.

I feel slightly smug that ive never heard of this show since seeing this thread.

I love MTV is garbage threads. That channel is trash. Its sad when the E! channel has more self respect then MTV.

I think there should be a law that you have to show what the name of your channel is. History Channel, The Learning Channel, Discovery, MTV seem to be in name only now..Oh and Fox News ha ha

All great stuff till that PS. Spongebob is the epitome of retarded childrens' programming. It's an acid trip with retarded characters doing stupid things for laughs with no thought or reason to it. It is far from the smartest things on TV and doesn't teach kids anything, even in the slightest. Wish Looney Toons or even Tiny Toons would come back as a cartoon. Or any Nick cartoon from the 90s. Those were somewhat intelligent and funny. Or am I just getting old?

Meh, not only is that show on the decline but the premise of it isn't bad or patently ignorant. Why people get mad about people watching shows they don't like is beyond my understanding. American Idol is a talent show, so I'm still not mad millions of people watch it. What would trouble me is if a show like Honey Boo Boo got the same ratings as AI, until then, who cares? 2 million people out of 300 million ain't bad.

Fair enough, but a lot of that consists of households with more than one person. I just don't believe only 1/6 of Americans have cable. Getting way off topic here, but still, only 2.5 million people watched this crap, so it hardly represents any kind of downfall in our society.
