Barkley speaks the truth. The Lakers are sad this year.

2013-01-05 12:00:29 PM
And THAT'S turrible.

Needs "Obvious" tag. Gasol shouldn't be playing, he should be resting until his tendonosis (sp?) and plantar fasciitis (sp?) are fully healed. They desperately need a little more bench depth to take the strain off Kobe, Nash, and Howard. Even if they get all that, this team has no business going past the second round, to say nothing of winning a title.

A couple days after Kobe answers "because we're old and slow" to a "why'd you lose tonight?" question, Dwight Howard responds "they share the ball" to "what's the difference between the Lakers and Clippers," lol.  Lovely.

I was waiting for the day-after Lakers loss thread.

50 games left in the season, and still a trade deadline awaiting. I think they will move Pau, but it might be prudent to sit him back down for a couple weeks until he gets truly healthy so they can increase his trade value. D'Antoni is still trying to force him into that stretch 4 role and that just aint gonna work with him.

I'm still holding out hope but it's not looking too good right now. But it's still a pleasure to watch Kobe put up the numbers he's putting up in his 17th season, really amazing stuff.

Would be nice to see Howard miss the playoffs after all the shenanigans he pulled in Orlando.

I had thought that Malone won a title with the Lakers, but I guess not. He was on the two Laker teams immediately following the threepeat. Then, in 2005, he apparently had a chance to sign with the Spurs.

/Missed it by that much.

That's maybe the cruelest one. One more year, and he'd have gotten his ring.

They're not only not a title team, right now they're a LOTTERY team. They're two games back on the 8th seed.

Apparently the NBA regular season matters after all and isn't just an 82-game warmup for the top teams before they get down to business.

And yet, he's still going. He and Duncan are the oldest active players not on the Knicks' roster.

Cue Jim Mora "Playoffs?!" rant. Forget Championship; this team needs to worry about even getting in there in the first place.

It seems to me the Lakers are trying to fit square pegs into round holes all over the place.

They've got an old, slow team who can't shoot three-pointers trying to run an offensive system based on running and shooting threes.

They've got an incredibly skilled 7 foot tall Spanish llama with ridiculous post game and they're keeping him on the perimeter and having him shoot threes.

I'm losing faith in Kupchak. He said D'Antoni was a better fit for this team than Jackson, but D'Antoni's system is a square peg and this Lakers team is a round hole.

Honestly, I blame personal bad blood between Jim Buss and Phil Jackson. Credit to Kupchak for getting through the D'Antoni press conference w/o his head exploding while trying to explain how Mike was a better fit for the roster than Phil Jackson.

To be fair to Barkley, Ewing and some others on that list; if you played in the 90s for someone other than the Bulls, you didn't have a lot of chances to win a title.

And Nash and Grant Hill. Funny how those guys immediately get hurt after leaving Phoenix. Those doctors must be using witchcraft or something to keep all their guys healthy. I couldn't even find a Vince Carter injury picture from his year there.

Lakers will be lucky to slide into the #8 spot in the playoffs. No bench, they're old as fark, Gasol is a lost cause, and Howard is on the decline. Doubt they'll get much for Gasol in a trade, but this is the NBA, so you have to know some team will be dumb enough to dismantle a promising future with a nucleus of young talent because they convince themselves an over-the-hill Gasol is all they need to make a playoff run now for a quick money grab. In any event, I'm glad the Celtics and Lakers are both failing this year.

coolio mack: Those doctors must be using witchcraft or something to keep all their guys healthy.

As I noted in an AFL column a couple years ago...even their Arena Football team was ridiculously healthy - they lost 50 less player-games due to injury than any other team in the playoffs. Only one player went on IR (he only missed the minimum 3 games) and the other less than half the roster only missed 1-2. In the AFL, you almost always get guys hurt.

/they share an arena, and possibly some of the training staff, with the Suns
//otherwise there's the equivalent of BALCO going on down there

I mean, yeah they kinda suck right now. But 0%? I wouldn't go that far...they could still fire DAntoni and hire Jackson and trade every one on their roster but Kobe to Miami for their roster.

Then the chances would be a lot better right, Chuck?

Jackson isn't the right man for that team if you want Nash to be Nash and instead be a post up shooter. The problem is they have no good consistent perimeter shooters outside of Nash and sometimes Kobe(Blake can be when he's healthy..).

Jackson wouldn't have had it any better.

Pau and Howard are still hurt and they still have shiatty defense, and Howard and Nash, two starters, would need to learn the triangle(particularly a huge change for Nash).

coolio mack: D'Antoni is still trying to force him into that stretch 4 role and that just aint gonna work with him.

It's probably his best role because he shoots well for a big and Howard is going to play C and handle the low post. Same way he played in Memphis. He's taking too many perimeter shots right now and not driving, but bad feet will do that.

No, it still is. The Laker's just aren't a top team, they're a bunch of geezers.

I see all this doom and gloom out of LA, and I figure I should check out their odds to win the championship. I figure they have some pieces, have a seven footer to trade to get more, and the refs love em. Seven to one! The tenth place team in the West is 7/1 to win the title? Spurs are 9/1. I was hoping for some 50/1 odds and some luck. Too many homers betting on the Lakers.

Hopefully Dwight gets back on the HGH so he can bulk up and dominate again. If Pau Gasol kills himself, do the Lakers automatically win the championship?

The Hornets have zero percent chance at winning the title..... the Lakers have a much more excellent of 0.5 %

Is there a way to bet on the Lakers not being winning it all? At 1/10 odds, you are still beating every investment currently available in the stock market, and is a lot safer investment.
