Man, I want that job. Virtual assassin for hire? The ladies would totally love it.

Well Sithis be praised, too bad it didn't work. This sounds like a pretty novel idea. Good for the dad for thinking outside the box, though it might come down to more traditional methods like kicking the son's freeloading ass out.

Here's how you make him get a job: Stop paying the bills and kick him out. I don't understand why this is so difficult.

Because he would just become homeless. Some parents don't want that.

He would for a time, then he would break down and get a job to survive. If he still will not then that is the normal progression of nature.

Let's see you toss your kid out on the street. Especially if you're Chinese. Not just by blood, because that means nothing, but by culture. Confucian values systems mean you take care of family about all else.

Chinese homes are typically multi-generational. They don't have the "each married couple has it's own home" thing that we have the West. Kicking him out would not be the normal progression of nature... His parents eventually dying off and then letting him sell the house to cover his debts as he runs out of funds when he's 60 - 80 is the progression in vogue.

It's the parents' house. No MMOs in the house. That simple. No homeless lesson even necessary.

So give him a deadline. Say, 6 months or until the end of the year then he's out. If after that long he still ends up homeless, he has no one to blame but himself.

Like none? Eve is probably the closest but TFA said it was a popular MMO so it definitely wasn't Eve.

Anyway, that kinda makes this story dumb. He hires someone to kill his son's character...who immediately respawns and the kid keeps playing. It's almost like this isn't news.

Well, that would make an interesting business card. Online Assassin for hire. Followed by the explanation that you aren't a contract killer, just someone hired out to kill people in MMOs.

Couldn't you call up the admins and request the banhammer? I've seen instances of forumers requesting tempbans from their own mods so they could concentrate on schoolwork and wouldn't be tempted to blow it off by hanging out on the boards.

And virginity. Yes it's a bad joke but the baby steps involved in leveling up bit by bit is just so time consuming it's pathetic. You think grinding in Skyrim is bad? Think about how many times you'd have to S&Q just to keep re-playing the first area in Diablo 2 until the imps and other fodder no longer give you XP. Then the hours of hit and run tactics just to get a couple of kills in the next areas, S&Q again, rinse, repeat.

Wiki

The link mentions single-player Steel Battalion, but not the multi-player sequel Line of Contact. If you fail to eject, you die and lose everything for that campaign.

Eve Online doesn't have permanent death but destroying a ship can be very painful for the victim. Getting yourself killed (podded) without an upgraded clone can be disastrous.

Wat? I Guardian'd several D2 HC characters, and I can tell you that there was no need whatsoever to do that.

In fact, unless you sucked horribly at the game, there were only about 3 places in normal difficulty where you even had to pay attention slightly (not counting act bosses). Sure, you would grind baal a bunch of times in normal/nightmare before going on to nightmare/hell, but you'd do that in non-HC mode too, just not as many times. Only reason you'd repeatedly grind anything else is if you were bored and wanted to get rushed through an act, or were looking for items - then you could do stuff like farming tristram in act 1 normal or meph runs in whatever difficulty. You never had to repeatedly farm for XP to avoid being underleveled except at the end of a difficulty level. Perhaps you'd have to do that if you were so careless that you had to be massively *overleveled/overgeared* in order to not die, but if you simply played intelligently and cautiously you had no need to do anything of the sort.

/didn't have a character die for over a year after starting to play HC, and got several guardians in that period
//took a 'the game is going to screw you now' 6-player-mass-disconnnect in uber trist to kill my first guardian, in fact

It's what my parents did to all of us - we were told "you're out when you're 18 or when you graduate from high school, whichever comes first." And they kept their word. I've been supporting myself since I was 17 - apartment, full-time job, and so on.

No excuse for that kind of stupidity.

It's not a Neal Stephenson Novel Of Big Ideas (tm), but just an action movie. It's ok, but library it rather than buy.

Oh.  It's one of those threads where people with no understanding of international culture demonstrate the profound ignorance that their parents passed on to them.

As has been mentioned, killing someone in WoW makes little to no real difference. Now, if this had been original Ultima Online, that might be a bit more of story. Death could be a major bummer in UO, particularly if you forgot to put your castle/fort/house keys on your vendor or in your bank before you went out and about,

I'd of said EVE but that's not perma-death... just a very heavy consequence for death.

Realm of the Mad God however, that is a perma-death and the game seems quite popular as well.
