The daughter, Zamira Osorio, also was determined to be illegally in the United States, but she was released because she qualifies for the Obama administration's deferred-action people for young people.

Yet again, a horrible copy editor rears his derpy head.

Valenzuela's identification checked out but that police determined she was in the country illegally, The Arizona Republic reports.

What a dick move.

I'm no expert in immigration law but I don't think she's even eligible to apply to reenter for ten years, I'm sure if she comes back illegally the casino will just call the cops again. And the winnings probably escheat to the casino if they're unclaimed for 30 days or something.

You are correct - $1200 and up, IIRC. A few dollars less, and this identity thief slash felony criminal is still roaming the streets.

With a few notaries you can sign over your winnings for others to pick up. This is true of any casino. Stop pretending everything is racist.

On behalf of the Las Vegas casino industry, thank-you you stupid Arizona rednecks.

No Casino would ever call INS. They would glance at the ID, make sure the gambler is 21, withhold 30% for the feds cut, pay out the winnings, and possibly offer a buffet comp.

If you're brown-skinned, it's well worth the 2 hour drive north to play in a city that doesn't give a damn where you're from.

You think a casino can't confirm the validity of an ID without calling the cops? I worked at a grocery store in Michigan that had an ID book, with examples of valid identification from everywhere in the hemisphere. A casinoin Arizona has trouble with south of the border IDs? They called the cops trying to scare this lady away from her winnings. They already withhold 30% of any jackpot over $1195, and it's up to the winner to prove to the IRS that they live in a jurisdiction that doesn't tax gambling wins.

It is so amazing that many of you think the casino is keeping this money. It gets transferred to an escrow until claimed or the legal term to receive payment has passed. They don't just go to the bank and keep the money.

It is easy to sign a few notary documents and have someone claim this money. The Casino isn't simply pocketing winnings. Just stop it.

When you get deported, where do they drop you off? At the border? Mexico City? The nearest federales office? Do you get a choice?

Unclaimed winnings go to the casino. Every found ticket and chip is considered property of the casino. And this is an Indian casino, regulated by the bureau of Indian affairs. Which pretty much means they can do whatever they want as long as they follow IRS rules regarding money laundering and witholding taxes.

How do they tax the winnings of foreign nationals here on vacation or other legitimate purpose? Besides, you CAN get a "taxpayer identification number" from the IRS if you're not eligible for a social security number for whatever reason, but still have a legal obligation to pay income taxes. In fact, lots of illegals actually have them so that they can file their return and get their refund. There is so much disconnect in our government with regards to illegal immigration that if you're dealing with an agency that has nothing to do with citizenship, immigration, etc. it's highly unlikely that you'll be deported or even reported. And even then, the Obama administration is primarily concentrating enforcement actions on those who don't behave themselves while they're here. If you don't drive drunk or commit crimes, you're not real likely to get deported. (and DON'T pull the "they committed a crime by coming here in the first place!" nonsense. Illegal immigration is a civil offense, not a criminal one. At least not the first time you cross the border illegally.) Of course, with regards to deportation efforts being concentrated on criminals, YMMV, especially in tea party states like AZ.

I'll bet the ID she presented was a Mexican "Matricula Consular" ID. Mexican citizens who live out of the country are supposed to register with the Mexican consulate in the country they moved to. They are then given an official government photo ID with their local residence information on it. These cards are often viewed with skepticism by people who see them, because they're a Mexican ID, written in Spanish, but contain a US address. I've also seen local police and other officials claim that these IDs are "easily forged," though having seen them, they are, in fact, a standard government ID, with security features and materials comparable to a US driver's license, and those are generally not viewed with such skepticism.

And yes, the Casino did a dick move, especially by not giving her or her daughter the money between the time the ID was validated and the time the police decided to detain her for her immigration status.

You know how I know you haven't actually ever worked for a Casino or any other industry that sees a lot of fake IDs and/or Mexican IDs?

For a time I was the guy at the Casino who did the ID checks. The absolute worst to deal with were Mexican IDs. It's nothing specific to the format, it's more that there IS no specific format. Each state or jurisdiction in Mexico that issues ID seems to insist on doing it COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than any other jurisdiction there. Name appears differently on each card, sometimes at the top, sometimes bottom, sometimes last name first or vice versa. The big one that blew my mind was that not all legal (in Mexico) forms of ID have the holder's date of birth listed on the card, but instead list the date the card was issued and how old the person was on that date. Had a few instances of people whose only form of ID was like that, and one instance where the woman holding it might or might not have been 21 years old.

That's not the big problem with Mexcan ID, though it is the headache-inducing part. The actual problem is the condition of ID that seems to be acceptable in Mexico. Not just scratches or marks, but cuts, tears, burns, general illegibility. We had one guy show up with an ID card that had been worn down so badly the lamination had separated completely, leaving him with a front side and back side that were separate. Even better, he had used scotch tape to "fix" it, by coiling it around the middle of the card. I'll admit that guy didn't seem to be the brightest bulb in the garden, but he was with a group of friends and they didn't seem to see anything wrong with it either.

Now the first couple of times you get handed ID like that, you figure it's probably fake. But when you finally check the IDs and find out that, yes, the information is real and the ID is technically legit, it's kind of an eye opener. This is just how some Mexican immigrants roll up here, for whatever reason.

Anyway, my longwinded point is, I could totally see this woman presenting a form of Mexican ID that was either heavily damaged (scotch tape) or just plain weird (age but no birthdate).

yukichigai: .

So there's a lot of fake Mexican IDs, so they should be extra suspect of valid Venezuelan IDs? They withold 30% for taxes already. Cops confirmed she was who she claimed and the ID was valid, so it most likely looked authentic. What interest do they have in being extra vigilant? They can do due diligence by looking at the authenticating marks on an ID. Probably some yahoo who doesn't like furriners calling INS to give themselves an erection.

If this woman in TFA were to make the drive from Tucson to Las Vegas in two hours, she'd probably have bigger things to worry about than being deported.
