Excellent failed attempt at inoculation.

Snark Shark II: So... why can't people just like stuff?

I like fishing, but some people would find that boring. These threads always become " stop liking what I don't like."

Maybe being a brony is slightly weird but no weirder than being a wrestling or football nut. Congratulations, you nerd out about grown men wrestling each other to the ground over and over again. It's only acceptable because people have been doing it for generations but you have to admit, objectively it looks a little homosexual. People with glass houses and everything...

It has to do with the fact that grown men are fans of a show that is targeted, marketed, made for....PRIMARILY... little girls. It's creepy and strange. A grown man being way into wrestling is also a bit strange, but it doesn't carry the caveat of being targeted mainly towards little girls. When it comes to these Bronies it has and will always be the little girl factor. It's downright scary. Could you imagine being a little kid back in the day and saying to your dad, "Hey, let's play some catch." Your father turns to you and says, "Not right now son, Strawberry Shortcake is on and I want to catch the end of it." But, the Bronies will say, Strawberry Shortcake didn't have the types of adult references that MLP has. All cartoons have winks and nods to adults because many of us have to watch this dreck with our kids. It has nothing to do with watching a cartoon. It has everything to do with an adult male watching a little girl's cartoon.

Actually, the current show was designed for all ages and genders, specifically to appeal to a much broader demographic than the 80s show was aimed at, and more importantly, it was designed to make Hasbro some money.

Bronies are just the new furries. There are many many similarities between the two fandoms, and very few differences. And in fact, there is a huge amount of overlap between the two.

And just like there's nothing inherently wrong with liking anthropomorphic animals, there's nothing wrong with liking My Little Pony. The wrong part is when you identify yourself based on this fandom, spent large amounts of time dedicating yourself to things about the fandom, and turn it into a sexual fetish.

Bronies by and large aren't going to tell you that they're an animal spirit in a human's body and real-life meetings of MLP fans are pretty damned wholesome and entirely above-board. If it's creepy, it's on the level of adults being fond of something that might be meant for children, but it's not sexualized. There's no Brony equivalent of "yiffing."

My wife and I use MLP as a palate cleanser after watching depressing shows and movies. We're burning through Downton Abbey and my wife cried 3 times in one episode and when it was over she asked for MLP because it's fun, happy, colorful, and everything works out in the end. I have no problem admitting this.

2013-01-05 09:35:26 AM
Oh and let me add: Not a brony, wife isn't a pegasister. We just enjoy the show.

My experience has been (and of course YMMV) that furries take their fetish very seriously.. Bronies, on the other hand, fully admit the whole fascination with the show is goofy. It's just something they have fun with. Interesting how all the haters insist that their connection with the show is sexual. I just don't see it myself. Personally, these people remind me of that NC pastor who told fathers that they should punch their son if they were to ever catch them doing girly things.

So he has no credibility with me regardless of what he says or does. The opposite of 'cool'

I'm with you, mate. Any Bourdain thread on Fark must contain 80% of posts where he gets his balls licked.

The percentage of the community that clops is low. Believe me, they're quite open about what they like and don't like sexually if you ask them. The majority of the community is just about loving ponies and other bronies (and not in "that" way).

And while there are bronies who are furries and vice-versa, most aren't. The average brony is an 14-25 yr. old. guy who just loves the show.

One of my TFette friends has an 11 year old son who really wants to go to New York's next big Brony convention. We had a serious conversation a few months ago about whether or not he was turning in to a pervert or something, which was really grounded in her concerns about furries or possibly concerns about his prepubescent masculinity. I guess those fears are valid, but the reality of the fandom is ridiculously inclusive and pretty much the same as the ideals of the cartoon. It's not like it's a bad thing to espouse the value of sharing and kindness and library science.

The image macros pique our curiosity, I mean, this has to be some ironic hipster thing... Then the quality of the writing and animation keeps us watching. But it's the incredible diversity and prolific community of artists who spring into action after every episode - and maybe a little magic - that makes it all complete.

I was at a hotel in Florida at the same time as furry convention, and they were just the nicest most sincere people ever. Somewhat socially awkward, sure. But there was never any kind of perverted-ness, or creepyness. Just people who like to wear silly outfits. Actually, some really well made, well thought out outfits. Frankly I don't see it as being any different than wearing a football jersey around town or buying a silly hat at a renaissance fair.

Indeed, I'm one of them. Maybe I only do vectors, and that's not exceptional compared to the community greats, it's still great fun. So many dedicated artists and musicians make it wonderful and newbies are always tolerated, loved, and generally trained quite well. I've learned music mastering and production techniques, vectoring, and lots of other stuff in the community. It's truly a wonderful place to be unless your involvement is with 4chan or other imageboards.

You don't hear people biatching about porn made from Family Guy, Spongebob, Avatar (both Airbender and blue people), Naruto, and endless other cartoons. The association with bronies and the small percentage that do make such r34/clop is mainly just because males liking "female" things is seen as a threat to conventional society.

Meh, pony fandom is just as bad as watching any other child intended works, it reflects a child-like mindset-ability-affinity. You know, like we all have denigrated Micheal Jackson for.

People addicted to bright colors as children are.
People who's ability is limited to the short and quick events that need little to no attention span.
People find attraction in puerile stories that need little functioning intellectual ability

The show as a whole is manufactured for people of those "qualities", and they eat it up wholesale. Man-children, no better than ICP asking how magnets work and then cursing those that offer education on the topic. Vehemently defending their infatuation of child-like wonder against those who find it distasteful.

In fact, Ponies are the new ICP. ICP tried to teach acceptance and tolerance(social outcasts all banding together to enjoy life), it is a big part of their culture. Don't judge. Only it's stylized cute, instead of stylized clowns with axes and decapitations. ICP washed of all the make-up and imagery and results in pure inanity.

Almost as comical as the projection and shoddy reasons they give for being assholes.

You have the "ZOMG PEDOFILE U WANT LITTL GURLS" people who are projecting in imax, you have the "SOMEONE WATCHING CANDY COLORED PONIES COULD CONCEIVABLY MAKE ME LESS OF A MAN!" geniuses, and there's always the "SEXUAL DEVIANTS! WE IGNORE ALL OTHER RULE 34 BESIDES PONIES! NFL SLASHFIC? I HAVE NO RESPONSE FOR THAT! PONIES ARE ALL THAT LEAD TO DEVIANCY!" people.

Really, if someone you don't even know watching a show about candy colored ponies threatens your masculinity, you ain't much of a man to begin with, are you? And BTW, your standards of masculinity are about century out of date.

The Pedophile screamers? Projecting their own urges. They're the ones with children on the brain.

Deviants? Eh, go look at Anime fans if you want to see deviance in action. And even then, what business is it of yours?

Laughing at fart jokes shows a child-like sensibility. Participating in an internet phenomenon about a little girl's cartoon shows indicates something else.

Seriously, how many "bronies" are healthy, well-adjusted adults with healthy friendships (in real life), relationships (in real life), careers, etc... Vs how many are weird internet people with poor lifestyle habits and little going for them (in real life)?

And I get it, I'm a huge Nick Cage fan. Non-ironically. I love his work. But I also admit that that's a little weird, and its one of my quirks. But I'm also a healthy adult, which is why I'm able to admit that.

How many bronies admit that their interest in the show is farking creepy? Not many, just look at this thread. Full of comments about how being a fan of a show intended for 8 year old girls is perfectly normal, and that anyone who dares otherwise is a sexist (or some other -ist) and is overcompensating for a small penis.

Either way, whatever, watch Dora The Explorer or Bratz or The Wiggles as a grown man, but don't get upset when people think its creepy.

Mid_mo_mad_man: Masculinity never goes out of style. Why just the other day I was felling trees on the back forty and thinking damn I'm manly. All kidding aside bronies that I've met are the stereotype basement living scared of gals type

Well, that strikes me as the same jerk who swear that every single woman is a gold-digging, manipulating whore or the pseudo-feminists that think that every man is a misogynistic potential rapist.

I mean, all (American) football fans that I've found just happen to be idiotic douchebags, the living stereotype of the moronic jock... That doesn't mean that ALL football fans are like that...
