Yea, my FB page is as uncontroversial and inoffensive as can be. I posted some things for Obama or against Romney, but I didn't go overboard and turn it into Salon.com. It's hard enough finding a job now without me posting job related gripes on a social network.

This, and this.

As far as I am concerned it is my god-given right as a freeborn American to gripe. If they don't want me griping about work, then they shouldn't do any of that farked up stuff I am griping about. Besides, isn't it better to let people blow off steam? Do you really want them to keep all that frustration bottled up inside? Sounds like a recipe for more Postal disasters to me.

What I do on my own time is my business, including griping about my job. It says something about them if they are so defensive about it.

/ Been talked to by HR about griping about work publicly.
// It's my fault my company now has a "social media policy"

It is one thing to have a life outside of work, and I have my share of complaints about my work, but an uncontrolled social media platform is the LAST place I would post anything which could come back to bite me later in life. Spend some time with real friends in person over a beer or something.

And, as a manager in real life, know that I run a search on Google, Facebook, and LinkedIn on every candidate before I make a final offer. Whatever is public...is fair game for me to form an opinion on whether you belong on the team.

The people protected by this ruling will be the last people ever to be protected by it. From here on out, you'll be fired for using too much creamer in the break room, not for your "concerted speech." Behold the glory of at-will employment.

(img1.fark.net conclusion is img1.fark.net.)

That's bad, but honestly given the way we think about work in this country, there's no other option. It's all we can do to get otherwise law-abiding businesses to hire citizens or legal immigrants, pay employment taxes, and pay minimum wage above the table--most of the time.
