GreatGlavinsGhost: Gah! It's near the end of the last official GJTB thread.

I managed to find the link, I was searching the Farkives for GJTB, when it was actually spelled out in the headline. As it stands I control+f'd RichieLaw and gave up in disgust because he was responding to so many people and had a bunch of parallel debates open. I'll just go with if anyone cares they can search it. I tried control finding for holiday, contact, thank you, but failed to spot the post. If someone else can up with a better term or wants to wade through all 97 RichieLaw results, go for it.

ExperianScaresCthulhu: Wait, are you for real? :( That's bogus, man.

Also, was it tied to the soup kitchen fundraiser (which did produce a 'thanks, guys' pat on the back thread) or not?

There were common organizers in both fundraisers. However I don't think they were directly joined. In the last thread the highlights where.

1. One farker who donated 1k pulled his donation out because RichieLaw (the guys whose bank account the kickstarter was ending up in) wasn't being responsive.
2. Richie, again the guy whose bank account was set to get the money from KS, came in and posted something about forgetting about the fundraiser and being unsure about the tax liability.
3. Various arguing by Fark Lawyers/Accountants over the tax issues.
4. Complaints about the transparency of the fundraiser.
5. Eventual full on trolling by parties on both sides, complete with threats to leave for reddit by one organizer and other crap in that vein.

So yeah, it was a clusterfark compared to the SVDP one.

If people spent half as much energy working, volunteering, or learning as they do on stupid bullshiat like this, the world would probably be a halfway decent place.

MikeSass: machoprogrammer: dickfreckle: doubled99: I bet it will be just as funny as the whole "buy him a bird" thing.

That wasn't intended to be funny, at least not the cause. If mocking an existing meme is what it took to get a few bucks to worthy charities, than that's what we'll continue to do.

I don't think there has been proof shown that money was actually donated to charities, though. I sure hope it was, but there hasn't been an update

Of course no proof showed up. What the hell did you think was going to happen? Farkers just got played for $14,000+ and there ain't a goddamn thing anyone can do about it. It is about time this shiat happened, too. This place has gotten too pansified, with people throwing BAWWW money every time a thread pops up with a reasonably good-sounding cause or a fun-sounding idea. Some days it feels like the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon in here rather than a fun website. Screw that...if you want to donate money to charity do that. If you want to give money to a fallen Farker or their family, do it through the channels listed in their obituary. Don't do it here though. Fark itself is not an appropriate place for panhandling or other financial deals like that. Honestly, Drew could get into trouble in certain circumstances if things went bad on one of these little efforts, even if it is done with the best intentions. At the very least this shiatstorm makes Fark look really bad. Still, I have heard that it is morally wrong to allow a sucker to keep his money, and Fark has apparently got no shortage of them. So maybe this money-grabbing prick actually did something right for the world just by scamming the dopes.

I need to look into this. Seriously. The Give Joe the Bird bit was dead to me the minute it was over. It seemed like a good thing, but perhaps I was duped. Have not read the outrage threads or any other protests. If it turns out I was duped, its my own fault for believing in something. If ti turns out I was duped, I guess that makes me an AM radio listener.

It was never "an existing meme". It still isn't.

Yeah, plus it isn't "what it took to get a few bucks to worthy charities" either, is it? The money never got there.

I am glad that there is at least a little bit of a bright spot in all of this. Some people in the original thread sent money to the charities directly, most notably Balchinian, who I believe sent a couple thou to each directly. I'm not going to go looking through the threads to find the exact amount, but it was something like that. So at least they got something from this whole stupid event.

ha-ha-guy: sethen320: Did anyone ever hear from Richie again?

It looks like he let his TF lapse and I haven't seen him in liter land. Not that I'm the authority on tracking people around here by any stretch. He does have a public email in his profile. You see some of the other people in the politics tab here and there, so I know they're active. No idea if they want to comment or not.

I thought it was interesting. Not funny, but interesting. My wife and I run fundraisers a few times/year and out of pure curiosity I watched to see what would happen. The execution could have been better with little to no additional effort.

Of course, that goes for raising money for charity. If that wasn't the real intent then maybe what they were doing was perfect.

GreatGlavinsGhost: You forgot to include 6: RichieLaw explained everything he was going to do once the holiday madness was over, which included distributing the money, sending thank-you cards, printing and sending out t-shirts and contacting Biden's office with a summary of what happened.

Can you link to that post, because I honestly did not see that. To be fair though within 100 posts the trolling had already begun and I was mostly skimming.

/it will head off a shiatstorm in this thread if it can be cited

Tommy Moo: Did the Give Joe the Bird people ever release any kind of summary statement, like "Thank you, donors. We raised $X, and it was accepted graciously by the four charities"?

I'm sure the whole thing was on the up and up, but it would be nice to see for myself.

Well the last thread ended with fark you haters and comments about decamping to reddit, because that is a nice environment. So I wouldn't hold my breath.
