I remember this old radio I used to have that picked up CBS, and I'd listen to The Price is Right when I was stuck at home sick from school because the TV was in the living room and sick people stayed in their room.

Agreed! A well-told story without attitude or irony is so difficult to find online these days...or maybe my problem is I read links almost exclusively from Fark. Anyway, I bookmarked this one for later so I can tell my lame students next semester: "Take a lesson, kids - THIS is how you tell a story."

It's my guilty secret that I've always wanted to be a contestant on TPIR. My folks always told me that my first words were "Come on down!", shouted at the TV when the show came on. I know it's sappy, but I always wanted to tell that story to Bob Barker.

The supposed appeal of game shows is the contestants being regular people through whom the viewer can vicariously experience the game. In the particular case of TPiR, it's supposed to be people who just walked off the street. If shows are going to be dominated by "professional contestants" who do a ton of homework ahead of time, there's less difference with competitively auditioned and cast "reality" game shows.

PHASE 3: Convince my brother-in-law in San Diego, who knows actually how to make spreadsheets, to make those spreadsheets.

I have a recurring nightmare where I make it to contestants row but don't make it on to the stage. It's strangely devastating every time. I'm not sure what it means but I'm pretty sure I need a therapist.
