Republicans will spend 2013 trying to reach both younger and minority voters, she says, by ramping up social media efforts and recruiting new, diverse spokespeople.

Y'know, it's kind of sad that most of them think their only problems have to do with sales pitches, with ineffective evangelism rather than with the product itself.

I never stopped using my yahoo mail account.  I didn't realize it was "out".

/Yeah, I got a gmail account, but tend to use my yahoomail more.

Still the same piece of shiat wrapped in a pretty box with a "lifetime guarantee."...hmm, reminds me of a Tommy Boy quote.

My father likes foreign cars. It was my grandfather that drove the Lincoln.

What makes becoming a Republican even more interesting is that I'm Canadian. Have the Republicans changed their stance that anyone from outside the US are basically darkies?

phaselous: "Y'know, it's kind of sad that most of them think their only problems have to do with sales pitches, with ineffective evangelism rather than with the product itself."

They came pretty goddamm close to defeating an historic, popular and charismatic President with a farking Martian, based almost entirely on the effectiveness of their marketing.

The majority of their rabid base identifies as and votes Republican despite the product itself being detrimental to their own best interests, based almost entirely on the effectiveness of their marketing.

They kinda have a point.

Don't underestimate them. They've managed to convince poor people they're nothing but millionaires in temporarily embarrassed circumstances. Maybe they can do the same thing for minorities. "You're not black, you're just temporarily melanin-enhanced. Just keep oppressing yourself until you turn white, and then think how good you'll have it."

Since the founders of Amway and their minions have always been active in Congress, that comes as no surprise.

THIS. It's amusing to hear Republican columnists and politicians say "we need to reach out to young/female/minority/etc. voters" with one mouth while whispering the same old dog whistles with the other. The cognitive dissonance is stunning.

BREAKING NEWS: if you talk to the people in charge of a failing brand, they'll all tell you that the brand is due for a comeback any day now.

Goddamn, the current state of journalism is depressing. Twenty years ago if you'd sent a puff piece like this to your editor he'd have strangled you with a typewriter ribbon.

while marketing has a lot to do with politics and phaselous' comment was really silly to suggest otherwise, it wasn't pretty goddamn close. Even Fox News knew it wasn't going to be close.

Nope - Return to MySpace
Nope - Re-open your Yahoo account

The problems with the GOP can't be fixed by using social media and younger spokespeople.

As long as you're trying to use the party to give religious extremists and the uber-rich whatever they want, you're going to keep losing.

I voted Republican in most cases through my life - up unitl Bush Jr's 2nd term. The "Lets use 0/11 to attack countries that have not attacked us" crap got old fast.

1) I closed my Facebook account because I couldn't stand being updated on the minutia of everyone's life. I'm done with social media crap.
2) My Yahoo account never closed. I just use it for receiving junk mail when I sign up for something
3) There is a better chance that I will be involved in a three-way with Jessica Biel and Scarlett Johannson than ever turning Republican

This!

The problem isn't "The GOP doesn't seem hip" the problem is "The GOP seems to hate gays, minorities, poor people, and science".

A good product sells itself.

I suppose I'll dust off the old dial-up modem in 2013, too. Anyone have spare Free AOL discs laying around?

I'm just waiting on the year when people stop becoming republicans or democrats. Keep at it congress - you might make my dream a reality.

I'd have to get a phone line installed in my house to do that. I haven't had a land line in almost 10 years.

I didn't drive a Lincoln Town Car, but I drove what had been my grandpa then mom's Crown Vic (same basic thing) for several years. Stodgy? Inefficient? Sure. Also, a whole helluva lot of fun to drive something with RWD and acceleration, at least from the point of view of someone who grew up in the K-Car era.

/ Grandpa got busted doing 90+ in it, at 84, a few months before he died.

Maybe all of the fringe republicans will become Libertarians

IMO...

Myspace: Maybe. They couldn't sink any lower without folding, so maybe they've hit bottom and will bounce back?

Tiger Woods: Winning solves everything.

Furby Toys: No kids, so no opinion here (other than the originals were damn creepy).

The GOP: A Forbes writer predicting the GOP will bounce back this year? Whodathunkit?

Ford Motor Company's Lincoln: No, and Car and Driver tells us why... "An MKZ equipped similarly to a loaded Fusion costs some $9000 extra, and by the time the Lincoln customer ticks the boxes for the MKZ's two signature options, a 3.7-liter V-6 ($1230) and a retractable glass roof that obstructs rear visibility when opened ($2995), he will be looking at a price tag much like the one of our $51,185 test vehicle."

Twinkies: Haven't eaten one in 25 years, so if they do, it won't be because I bought any.

Yahoo: Perhaps I'm an outlier, but I like My Yahoo's customizable home page, my Yahoo email account and Flickr. I know Google has comparable services, and some would say they're superior to Yahoo's, but I see no need to switch. I do have a Gmail account, but since I know Google analyzes every email I get, I only use it for one mailing list.

Anything I say would be redundant to every point made here. But... I haven't been this discouraged about how ineffective government in general has become since the Vietnam War. It even sucks here in sunny California. I think our legislators' popularity ranks in the 20% range. They should be part-time for that score, or lower their self-given raises and goodies. Or treat them like children with a long time-out until they help the people and cut all the partisan crap. And NOPE to all FARK's points. This might be a good time to point out that, despite "prophecy", we all woke up on 12-21-12 with the same shiat.

I live here CA too, work for the government, and totally agree, the legislators should be part time. What a joke they are.
