Shortwave listening is getting as bad as scanner monitoring. Not much left on SW besides religious and forget about scanners. The little bumfark one square mile town I live in just went digital encrypted. Even the DPW is on the new system. I feel served and protected.

These are what brought down the Soviet Union.

I hear they're all made somewhere far off from America, sewn by tiny-fingered child wage-slaves.

I guess capitalism won out. Again. I'm so proud to be an American.

sigh. Link

Its still in operation; its just downsized, restructured and went digital(although it was kicked out of Russia by Putin). So your joke isn't funny, because you trusted the Fark headline was accurate.

Wouldn't you just need a modern scanner with "digital trunking" or whatever?

I mean, a few years back I bought a Rat Shack base station scanner for btw 100 and 150 iirc and it does the digital trunking thing for my mid to large sized city. They even programmed it for me...
That said, SW listening is not as much fun as it used to be.

I'm sure NPR and PBS would have survived the cutting of Government funds.

Indeed. While it is becoming more common, most police departments and the like (I find it highly unlikely the DPW anywhere is actually encrypting) are not encrypted, just digital.

Remember the Clipper Chip, and how it was going to give US consumers encrypted cell phone lines? And remember how everyone complained about government digital key escrow, so the feds killed the whole idea, and so now we don't have any kind of cheap universally secure cell phones?

Perhaps the changes were necessary and overdue, said Alexander Morozov, director of the Institute of Media Research. But he said all would have been accepted better had staff members been given the opportunity to see whether they could fit into the new strategy

Perhaps? Sorry, it's been more than 20 years since the fall of communism in Europe, and nearly the same amount of time since they should have shifted to a web-based strategy if they even needed to continue such a thing.

Maybe they shouldn't have built that fancy new building in the outskirts of Prague...

Late coming back here but if you happen to return.... Nope, we're encrypted. Hooked onto Piscataway's radios and using them for dispatch. Here's a discussion about it. I'm in Dunellen and I think it starts around halfway through page 3.

Yep. Everyone has a computer and high speed line. Especially in the outskirts of Russia.
