A few of my more "redneck" friends on Facebook picked up on this story and posted how Al Gore was benefiting from a terrorist organization.

It took me a minute to figure it out when I realized that I though they had mistaken Al Jazeera for Al Qaeda.

I thought we'd all have a big laugh about the mistake. I was wrong. They are actually functionally retarded and believe that the news organization is a wing of a terrorist org.

This weekend I start de-friending.

Thunderpipes: TIKIMAN87: He also doged being taxed on 100 million in income while saying we need to tax the rich.

Such a piece of scum.

He tried, word is the deal did not close in time, so he will owe 8.8 million more.

But ya, scumbag of the highest order. Publicly states he sold to them because they share his political views. Remember, this is the network that just threw a birthday party for an arab who killed a 4 year old Israeli girl with the butt of his rifle, after killing her father in front of her. Same network that just aired a documentary of Bin Laden showing what a great guy he was.

Just? The birthday party thing was in 2008, for a guy who'd been released after 29 years in Israeli prisons. And they apologized for it afterward and made a policy change. And their coverage of bin Laden enraged Al Qaeda.

When I was in Iraq, we considered them the best-sourced, least-biased Arabic news source. And here in DC, I watch AJE when I watch cable news (which isn't often; I prefer reading news to watching it). They're biased against Israel, obviously, which mainly comes out in their opinion programming, but their actual news coverage is dead-level straight, and competent. The best thing about them is that they cover the world in terms of natural disasters, politics, science, sports, etc., without any discernable slant. I just ignore their Israeli-Arab coverage (it's a very small slice of Al Jazeera English).

As for my man Al Gore, I don't see hypocrisy in taking advantage of current tax laws to save money while calling for higher taxes on your income bracket. He'd pay those higher taxes, too; he just doesn't want to be the sucker who pays them while everyone else in his bracket shirks.

At first I thought it was my dad... he has always been a Conservative (but in the "don't tax me and leave me the hell alone" Republican, he can't stand what the Republican party is now). I thought after I moved out, he brainwashed her.
She got a big paycheck with a huge chunk of taxes taken out, and started blaming the Democrats (happened when Bush was in office).. then she turned on AM radio, listened to Rush, Glenn, Sean, Michael Berry (Houston tea party ass), took everything they said as the word of God... She always made a point of saying she had racist parents, and she broke that cycle of teaching with us, but, she has become such a xenophobe racist, it is unbearable. But, I understood her "I am overtaxed" argument, but the rest of it makes no sense to me at all. I said parent, not parents... Dad is nothing like my mother... he is simply a Republican because he is sicked of being taxed and told what to do... He could give a shiat less about the other crap Republicans are trying to do (Pro-life, gay marriage, etc).. My mother was once a Democrat, we both voted for Bill Clinton, twice.. and she was going to vote for Al Gore, but changed her mind at the last moment (Bush being a "Texan" and all that) Bush was the first time she voted for a Republican.

Didn't say anything about my "sad" childhood...

First, Al Jazeera Media Network hasn't been a public institution for a few years.

Second, Qatar is a regional leader in renewable energy. The solar installations being built will run 80% of their desalination plants.

But by all means, if there's evidence of a pro-petroleum agenda being pushed by AJ, it should be simple to find. Right? I mean, FOX News' is easy enough to prove.

You made that assumption all by yourself.

Actually you did with that stupid question.

I don't care either way, I think Al Jazeera is a reputable news source and has done a fantastic job covering events like the Arab Spring (got to watch the Anti-Israel bias though).

That being said, it's better than the sad disgrace that we call news channels here in the US like Fox, CNN and MSNBC and it'll be nice having a news station that doesn't feel obligated to tell us who knocked up some Kardashian lady.

I'm guessing you're about 14? I worked with guys in the military who suspected Al Jazeera of being tied to Al Qaeda. Those guys were dumb people who had never worked with the media. As far as most operators are concerned, ALL members of the media are this close to being spies, because they interview both sides in a conflict.

You notice they cut that guy loose despite the (Bush White House-sponsored) suspicions of terrorist ties. Because the suspicious people didn't know what the crap they were talking about.

I got to be honest, I've never watch Al Jazeera (the Arab version anyways) due to my inability to speak fluent Arabic, as is common with most Midwesterners.

However I have watched the English language version of it and found it to be a great source of journalism and not a source of terrorist propaganda. You do have to watch their coverage when they cover something with Israel because it definitely has a critical bent towards Israel which makes since since most of that region is critical towards Israel. Outside of  that, you will see stories you would never see on news stations like BBC and CNN International and you would NEVER see on "news" stations like Fox News, BBC, and MSNBC who are all too busy telling us who knocked up Kim Kardashian.

It definitely gives you a different perspective which scares the hivemind groupthink folks like those that consist of the modern day Conservative movement.

Which is why they obviously hate it.

So you can point out ALL the other times with a nice quick link, found as easily as the one I found with ~15 seconds of Wikipedia searching, right? Because if I'm wrong I'd love to know it. If they are an evil organization that condones terrorism I'd love to know it. I don't like being ignorant. I like knowing the facts and being able to produce them, it makes me better at future arguments and makes me a more informed world citizen. I'm a pretty decent person. I donate time and money to an animal shelter, and I brought the homeless dude on the corner some turkey for thanksgiving. I love my wife still, after 11 years, despite her having a chronic illness that's a financial drain, and I pray every day. So if Al Jazeera truly is horrible like you say, I would love to know that so I can denounce them as well, but I'm gonna need more proof than the words you type. I'm gonna need some links that aren't Billy-Bob's blog.

See, if you can't produce links of AJ doing it "again, and again, and again" nobody here is going to believe you. It may or may not make a difference in your mind, but it will make a difference to every other person reading this thread.

Nazis and Westboro Baptist Church are allowed to do their things because of this freedom, so what's the big deal with an Arabic news channel that we all know covers legitimate news as well as broadcasts terrorist insanity?

Westboro did not win a Nobel Peace prize for compassion and then show up to protest funerals.

Al sold his network to an Oil country, which he is supposed to hate. AJ is a mouthpiece for terrorists, this is fact. He tried to avoid capital gains taxes by getting the deal closed in time, right after going on TV and saying how the rich need to pay their fair share.

Thunderpipes: Read my post. AJ calls people a hero if they beat little girls to death with rifle butts. If you have no problem with that, I just don't have the words.

After Fox News and other New Corp subsidiaries decided to beatify torturers and war criminals, the needle in my outrage meter resigned.

Since Al Jazeera were the ones that initially (?) ran the Osama Bin Laden videos, they'll always be associated with terrorism by some, no matter what.

SlothB77: And this guy was almost president.

And a shame he wasn't. He's already exhibited a hundred times the business acumen of the ostensible "businessman President" who couldn't make a Texas oil business profitable.

mbillips: So, will they keep the Current TV brand and throw Al Jazeera programming on it, or will Al Jazeera's 24-hour news channel finally get on my local cable package? Because I've been wanting that for a long time; they're the second-best 24-hour news channel out there, next to the BBC.

Theoretically Current and Al-Jazeera English would merge.

As for getting it on your teevee? Not gonna happen. Time-Warner dropped Current like a hot potato yesterday, and presumably all the other major cable/sat providers will do the same before AJ takes over. If they wouldn't carry AJE before, they're not carrying this going forward.

However, AJE is available on internet streaming including Roku. Also, for under $200 you could install a free-to-air satellite dish (slightly bigger than the normal DirecTV/Dish dish, but not the old giant dishes) and get AJE, Russian and Chinese propaganda stations, a dozen crazy religious broadcasters, and tons of foreign-language stuff.

More than likely Current TV will become the de facto name for Al Jazeera in the states. Less foreign sounding, you know.

Am I supposed to be offended by this sale?
My mother (once a even keeled, slightly liberal Democrat... turned into a Rush is Right, the world is against us, brown people are bad crazy tea party conservative almost overnight) was mad this morning about it, and tried to pick a fight with me over it.
"Al Gore sold his news channel to Al-Jazeera... wouldn't sell it to Glenn Beck, but sold it to the Arabs".

I see no issue with it, but apparently she believes it is run by the Taliban
