So, will they keep the Current TV brand and throw Al Jazeera programming on it, or will Al Jazeera's 24-hour news channel finally get on my local cable package? Because I've been wanting that for a long time; they're the second-best 24-hour news channel out there, next to the BBC.

Am I supposed to be offended by this sale?
My mother (once a even keeled, slightly liberal Democrat... turned into a Rush is Right, the world is against us, brown people are bad crazy tea party conservative almost overnight) was mad this morning about it, and tried to pick a fight with me over it.
"Al Gore sold his news channel to Al-Jazeera... wouldn't sell it to Glenn Beck, but sold it to the Arabs".

I see no issue with it, but apparently she believes it is run by the Taliban

A few of my more "redneck" friends on Facebook picked up on this story and posted how Al Gore was benefiting from a terrorist organization.

It took me a minute to figure it out when I realized that I though they had mistaken Al Jazeera for Al Qaeda.

I thought we'd all have a big laugh about the mistake. I was wrong. They are actually functionally retarded and believe that the news organization is a wing of a terrorist org.

This weekend I start de-friending.

I love how people who hurr and durr about the "free market" seem to think the gubbmit should tell Algore (I have never, ever figured out why thats supposed to be insulting, but right-wingers spell his name like that all the time; it's the same people who say "Democrat party") to sell his channel to Glenn Beck.

More than likely Current TV will become the de facto name for Al Jazeera in the states. Less foreign sounding, you know.

But ya, scumbag of the highest order. Publicly states he sold to them because they share his political views. Remember, this is the network that just threw a birthday party for an arab who killed a 4 year old Israeli girl with the butt of his rifle, after killing her father in front of her. Same network that just aired a documentary of Bin Laden showing what a great guy he was.

Theoretically Current and Al-Jazeera English would merge.

As for getting it on your teevee? Not gonna happen. Time-Warner dropped Current like a hot potato yesterday, and presumably all the other major cable/sat providers will do the same before AJ takes over. If they wouldn't carry AJE before, they're not carrying this going forward.

However, AJE is available on internet streaming including Roku. Also, for under $200 you could install a free-to-air satellite dish (slightly bigger than the normal DirecTV/Dish dish, but not the old giant dishes) and get AJE, Russian and Chinese propaganda stations, a dozen crazy religious broadcasters, and tons of foreign-language stuff.

Current TV will be rebranded as Al Jazeera America. Current's studios in NYC will be updated and its staff doubled. Content will be 60% originating from these studios and 40% from Al Jazeera English in London.

FTFA - On Thursday, however, the company, which ranks as the nation's second largest cable provider with 12 million subscribers, walked back from that stance a bit. "We are keeping an open mind, and as the service develops, we will evaluate whether it makes sense, for our customers profit margin, to launch the network," Time Warner Cable said in a statement.

Sorry, had to fix this for them...

It'll be Al Jazeera, but not an expansion of the current Al Jazeera English, unfortunately. They're creating a whole new network just for the U.S. (which means they'll probably copy existing networks and focus mostly on celebrities, reality TV and fear-mongering).

Al Gore is a dick and a hypocrite on many issues, but I will give him credit for being a great money-hungry capitalist.

Seriously, though, even assuming AJ is evil, our country is founded on freedom of speech. Insane thoughts are allowed to exist for a reason--in order to advertise the opposing opinion, and to clarify who the nuts are.

Nazis and Westboro Baptist Church are allowed to do their things because of this freedom, so what's the big deal with an Arabic news channel that we all know covers legitimate news as well as broadcasts terrorist insanity?

At first I thought it was my dad... he has always been a Conservative (but in the "don't tax me and leave me the hell alone" Republican, he can't stand what the Republican party is now). I thought after I moved out, he brainwashed her.
She got a big paycheck with a huge chunk of taxes taken out, and started blaming the Democrats (happened when Bush was in office).. then she turned on AM radio, listened to Rush, Glenn, Sean, Michael Berry (Houston tea party ass), took everything they said as the word of God... She always made a point of saying she had racist parents, and she broke that cycle of teaching with us, but, she has become such a xenophobe racist, it is unbearable. But, I understood her "I am overtaxed" argument, but the rest of it makes no sense to me at all. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this time next year the woman has a militia and an underground bunker.
My two brothers always attempt to impress dad is why they are Republicans.
I never blindly followed anything (including religion) and always questioned everything, which is probably why I never got my fathers approval on anything, but don't care.

So my ex-Mother in Law's spirit has taken over your girlfriend. Pro-tips: She'll want Happy Meal hamburgers with one slice of tomato and real onion. You can't order it from the drive thru; you'll have to go in and argue with a different employee every night. She'll demand the higher priced adult diapers but take them out of the package and put them in a waste basket. Then you can sneak the cheapos while she's watching "Food You'd Never Cook Cooked by an Obese Diabetic" There's a hot Italian lady on "Old Country Cooking with Hot Italian Babe." Don't stare too much and she won't change the channel to "Old Game Shows Where People Get Excited About Winning $500".

Qatar is the richest nation in the world (GDP per capita), and almost all of it is because of oil (and other fossil fuels). They are quite different than the US. Once again, Al has spent so much time, won a Nobel peace prize, and decried evil people for using oil, and then to sell to an oil country like that is just beyond hippiecritical.

This should just be the standard Fark signature. Original much?

huh?

Every single Fark liberal has the same story. Their parents are xenophobic conservative racists. But somehow you saw the light and are so much smarter. Same exact story as everyone else here but me. If all your childhoods were so sad, I guess that explains the completely warped view of the world most people here have.

I said parent, not parents... Dad is nothing like my mother... he is simply a Republican because he is sicked of being taxed and told what to do... He could give a shiat less about the other crap Republicans are trying to do (Pro-life, gay marriage, etc).. My mother was once a Democrat, we both voted for Bill Clinton, twice.. and she was going to vote for Al Gore, but changed her mind at the last moment (Bush being a "Texan" and all that) Bush was the first time she voted for a Republican.

Didn't say anything about my "sad" childhood...

But, whatever, categorize us all as "libtards"... if that makes you feel better

Thunderpipes: Rapmaster2000: Thunderpipes:

Al sold his network to an Oil country, which he is supposed to hate.

The US produces 10 times more oil that Qatar, so that means that Al Gore was an even bigger hypocrite when he owned an American company.   If he wanted to put his money where his mouth is then he would have moved his company to a non-oil producing nation like Costa Rica, but he founded it where he lived so he is the most hypocritical hypocrite that ever hypocrited.

This proves that I understand what hypocrisy is.

He is such a hypocrite that I heard that he travels by car rather than by rickshaw.  If he really cared about fossil fuels then he would be screaming "DIDDY MAO" at his rickshaw boy to and from work every day.  That guy makes me want to PUKE!

No. He sold it to a network owned by Qatar, a state that derives practically all its funding through the sale of fossil fuels. So now Current TV works for evil climate change polluters.

I can also appreciate the tax increase aspect. People feel victimized (it's hard not too when money is taken from you) and in that realization of victimization they look for someone to provide them the seemingly simple answers that they want to hear... which opens them to be brainwashed. It's easy to support or deny something until it effects you personally and then it's easy to overcompensate in your attempt to deal with whatever is upsetting you.

My Mom (religious - not particularly political) is heavily influenced by my Dad (non-religious - highly fiscally conservative). My dad is frustrated in general with the country (seeing the Republicans as the only ones trying to be fiscally responsible) and my Mom repeats the crap my Dad says to her (which he is really saying to himself in order to convince himself he's still a Republican). I know she doesn't actually believe because I can easily convince her otherwise. But my dad is a different story, he likes to argue about facts which are hard to argue against in a specific context and it turns into a more of a priority situation where he generally feels something is way more important than it actually is which ends up blinding him from the big picture.

So you can point out ALL the other times with a nice quick link, found as easily as the one I found with ~15 seconds of Wikipedia searching, right? Because if I'm wrong I'd love to know it. If they are an evil organization that condones terrorism I'd love to know it. I don't like being ignorant. I like knowing the facts and being able to produce them, it makes me better at future arguments and makes me a more informed world citizen. I'm a pretty decent person. I donate time and money to an animal shelter, and I brought the homeless dude on the corner some turkey for thanksgiving. I love my wife still, after 11 years, despite her having a chronic illness that's a financial drain, and I pray every day. So if Al Jazeera truly is horrible like you say, I would love to know that so I can denounce them as well, but I'm gonna need more proof than the words you type. I'm gonna need some links that aren't Billy-Bob's blog.

See, if you can't produce links of AJ doing it "again, and again, and again" nobody here is going to believe you. It may or may not make a difference in your mind, but it will make a difference to every other person reading this thread.

Thunderpipes: TIKIMAN87: He also doged being taxed on 100 million in income while saying we need to tax the rich.

Such a piece of scum.

He tried, word is the deal did not close in time, so he will owe 8.8 million more.

Just? The birthday party thing was in 2008, for a guy who'd been released after 29 years in Israeli prisons. And they apologized for it afterward and made a policy change. And their coverage of bin Laden enraged Al Qaeda.

When I was in Iraq, we considered them the best-sourced, least-biased Arabic news source. And here in DC, I watch AJE when I watch cable news (which isn't often; I prefer reading news to watching it). They're biased against Israel, obviously, which mainly comes out in their opinion programming, but their actual news coverage is dead-level straight, and competent. The best thing about them is that they cover the world in terms of natural disasters, politics, science, sports, etc., without any discernable slant. I just ignore their Israeli-Arab coverage (it's a very small slice of Al Jazeera English).

As for my man Al Gore, I don't see hypocrisy in taking advantage of current tax laws to save money while calling for higher taxes on your income bracket. He'd pay those higher taxes, too; he just doesn't want to be the sucker who pays them while everyone else in his bracket shirks.

fickenchucker: Al Gore is a dick and a hypocrite on many issues, but I will give him credit for being a great money-hungry capitalist.

Seriously, though, even assuming AJ is evil, our country is founded on freedom of speech. Insane thoughts are allowed to exist for a reason--in order to advertise the opposing opinion, and to clarify who the nuts are.

Nazis and Westboro Baptist Church are allowed to do their things because of this freedom, so what's the big deal with an Arabic news channel that we all know covers legitimate news as well as broadcasts terrorist insanity?

>>>>>>give him credit for being a great money-hungry capitalist.

He "makes" much of his money by manipulating deals where the government passes a law that forces people to buy stuff (carbon credits, for example) and he JUST happens to have an interest in a company that sells them. Sorry, not my definition of a capitalist. State-Capitalist or Corporate-Socialist, but not Capitalist.

>>>>>Seriously, though, even assuming AJ is evil, our country is founded on freedom of speech.

True.

>>>>>Insane thoughts are allowed to exist for a reason--in order to advertise the opposing opinion, and to clarify who the nuts are.

Not true. See your point about freedom of speech.

I got to be honest, I've never watch Al Jazeera (the Arab version anyways) due to my inability to speak fluent Arabic, as is common with most Midwesterners.

However I have watched the English language version of it and found it to be a great source of journalism and not a source of terrorist propaganda. You do have to watch their coverage when they cover something with Israel because it definitely has a critical bent towards Israel which makes since since most of that region is critical towards Israel. Outside of  that, you will see stories you would never see on news stations like BBC and CNN International and you would NEVER see on "news" stations like Fox News, BBC, and MSNBC who are all too busy telling us who knocked up Kim Kardashian.

It definitely gives you a different perspective which scares the hivemind groupthink folks like those that consist of the modern day Conservative movement.

Which is why they obviously hate it.

karnal: Al-Jazeera is an anti- American Arab television network primarily known as a mouthpiece for al-Qaeda

You know how I know you've never watched Al Jazeera?

Because you are a pompous Know-It-All?

If you want to be ignorant of the facts, then go ahead....or read this:
Link

I'm guessing you're about 14? I worked with guys in the military who suspected Al Jazeera of being tied to Al Qaeda. Those guys were dumb people who had never worked with the media. As far as most operators are concerned, ALL members of the media are this close to being spies, because they interview both sides in a conflict.

You notice they cut that guy loose despite the (Bush White House-sponsored) suspicions of terrorist ties. Because the suspicious people didn't know what the crap they were talking about.

Obama's time machine must be involved somehow.

Remember when Bush thought about bombing the Al Jazeera HQ in Doha because he thought it was a terrorist mouthpiece for Al Qaeda? Thank God Tony Blair told him that was a batshiat stupid idea of monumental proportions or else we'd be in big trouble.

Good times.

Just Another OC Homeless Guy: fickenchucker: Al Gore is a dick and a hypocrite on many issues, but I will give him credit for being a great money-hungry capitalist.

>>>>Nazis and Westboro Baptist Church are allowed to do their things because of this freedom, so what's the big deal with an Arabic news channel that we all know covers legitimate news as well as broadcasts terrorist insanity?

Nothing at all.

Capitalist----> I was being sarcastic. He's a piece of money-hungry shiat selling snake oil.
Clarifying who the nuts are----> Also sarcasm. I know it was about government persecution.

In case this hasn't been covered, do you have a Roku or other streaming device? Al J is on it, and also live on youtube.

For anyone trying criticize either Gore or Al Jazzera: Fox News. And no, it doesn't matter what your argument is, if I evoke Fox News and label you a conservative then all your arguments are invalid.

Don't try to argue with that either, I won't tolerate any of that bullshiat. You're going to get a passive aggressive response that mocks your intelligence, which means that I no longer have any obligation to address any points you make since they will be so dumb that they don't warrant a response.

Don't you feel dumb now?

How is this different than Rupert Murdoch fellating Chinese Communist leaders for the sake of getting lodgement in the Chinese media market?

For starters, Murdoch is not American or an ex Vice President of the United States....but both are very unethical, and while Murdoch fellates the Chinese Communist, Gore has in turn blown most of the Muslim Brotherhood - so in that way they are similar.

??? I can't see Gore being the Allah Akbar type, but I can easily see Murdoch embracing authoritarianism for the sake of a buck.

Current TV will be rebranded as Al Jazeera America. Current's studios in NYC will be updated and its staff doubled. Content will be 60% originating from these studios and 40% from Al Jazeera English in London.

Actually you did with that stupid question.

I don't care either way, I think Al Jazeera is a reputable news source and has done a fantastic job covering events like the Arab Spring (got to watch the Anti-Israel bias though).

That being said, it's better than the sad disgrace that we call news channels here in the US like Fox, CNN and MSNBC and it'll be nice having a news station that doesn't feel obligated to tell us who knocked up some Kardashian lady.

First, Al Jazeera Media Network hasn't been a public institution for a few years.

Second, Qatar is a regional leader in renewable energy. The solar installations being built will run 80% of their desalination plants.

But by all means, if there's evidence of a pro-petroleum agenda being pushed by AJ, it should be simple to find. Right? I mean, FOX News' is easy enough to prove.

I agree. I could care less, but Al Gore making money that's linked to petroleum is typical of his type. Never practice what you preach. And unless you are one of Al Gores super duper global warming buddies, I wasn't asking the question of you. So get over it.

Second, petroleum make up 70% of Qatar economy.

But by all means dispute those facts til your face is blue. It still won't make you right. Not sure what FOX News has to do with my statement about Al Gore being a hypocrite?

It had to be said because (whether your intent or not) your comment just added to the string of "lol, Algore is a hypocrite and therefore (and furthermore) everything about this is bad and you're all terrorists" that every troll has posted in the past two threads about this.

Yes and no. They were reclassified as a private entity a couple of years ago, but the state still holds significant stake.

Let's discuss this civilly.

As The Bestest already pointed out, your initial comment is inaccurate, but we'll leave that aside for now. What specifically is the nature of your accusation? Is it that AJ, being partially or wholly owned by the Qatar state, is going to reverse Current's stance on renewable energy? Or is it that Al Gore, because he promotes alternative energy, should naturally shun and hate any entities that profited from oil, even if that has absolutely nothing to do with AJ's editorial policies?

Because unless I'm missing something significant, neither of these arguments make any rational sense.
